Craftsman Cues

Hello guys.

I was going to order a tip compressor from Craftsman Cues until I realised the shipping was £9.50 for just first class.

That's the bog standard rate for everything on their website. Has it always been this high? That's pretty ridiculous!

Imagine ordering 5 elks for £2.50, to pay £9.50 postage!

Cleaning/Maintenance Of Cue

I've just started using a combination of sugar soap & Wood Silk Beeswax Spray on my cue to clean & maintain it. I use the sugar soap first to get rid of all the chalk and grease off the cue and this seems to clean it up really well. I then use the Wood Silk Beeswax Spray to finish the cue off & to put a bit of moisture back into the wood grain. Are these two products good to use on a snooker cue or not?

Trying to improve backswing

Hi all

I've been trying to tinker with my technique in a bid to improve my game, so I've watched a few top players on the internet and I've noticed on their backswing they bring their cue almost back to their thumb on their bridge hand, particularly on power shots. This is really noticeable in O'Sullivan's and Ricky Walden's backswing. I've tried to do the same but my timing goes right out of the window and miss the object ball altogether! I don't have too much trouble with screwing the ball as I follow through well but I'm struggling with the backswing (along with the final pause). Has anyone got any hints on how I can improve this?

Thanks for any replies!

Sending items through the post

This morning I looked at sending an old cue to a cousin of mine and also a box of chalk, I thought this would be a simple process, was I wrong.

Hopefully I can pick the brains of the people who do this more often as I've never done it before and want to find the cheapest price; I have spoken to various couriers and ended up even more confused due to the amount of options and problems with sizes. I'll itemise as below for anyone that can help find the best and cheapest methos, I don't mind how long it takes to get there!

It's taken me surprise as the weight of the chalk really wacked the price up.

This is a mainland UK to mainland UK delivery.

Item 1 Old snooker cue

1.49 metres and no insurance required. Will put in a 40mm plastic tube (1.5m)

Item 2 1 box of triangle chalk

144 pieces and weighs 2.4kg, measures 20cm x 14.5cm x 7cm - No insurance or signature required.

I figured there would be a lot of people who do this often on here so better from the horses mouth than re-invent the wheel!

Couple of Cues on eBay

I've listed a couple of cues on eBay, probably more pool spec that snooker unless you prefer a smallish tip size.

1. Ton Praram III Maple cue. Ordered this through the group buy one here a while ago. Lovely solid cue and would have been my playing cue if I hadn't made the mistake of ordering it an inch shorter that my normal cue. This has been used for a few days practice at home, plays well but I have always gone back to my normal cue as I feel this one is just a touch short for me. No dents or damage, as new condition.
Length 56 inches
Tip 9.0 mm
Butt 29.8mm round butt (no flat)
Weight 18.1 ounces
http://ift.tt/2bypX3q

2. ADR Professional Ash Cue. Again bought of here, Andrew's batch of cues with the spelling error on the badge. This is one of the more expensive ones with the better quality dark black ebony butts. Bought it to try Ash again but I just find the chevrons too distracting on these ligtht coloured shafts after playing with maple for so long. A very good quality cue for the money. This has had a few frames of pool at most, basically as new.
Length 58 inches
Tip 9.1 mm
Butt 29.8 mm
Weight 17.5 ounces

Balls

Not sure if this is best suited under Tables or Accessories! So apologies if in the wrong place :)

Would anyone be able to point me in the direction as how to identify age or type/material of a set of balls?
The set that I got with my antique (1900 era ish) Riley table is certainly quite old looking at the colours on them. Other than the white being damn close to yellow, the pink being faded orange and the green and blue nearly indistinguishable from eachother, I can see they're old but no idea if they're properly old or just a crap set of 1970's cheap and cheerfuls.
They're only ~43mm.

Quite piebald, no evidence of cracking, grain or crosshatching as I've seen on examples of some proper old balls.

Adr147 tips.

I got some Adr147 soft tips a few weeks ago, really nice tips, a pleasure to cut and shape. Have played with them for a couple of weeks and they really are a good tip, however they are just a little hard for me, no criticism of the tip just a personal thing.

Of course I had to give the Super Softs a try as the Soft was close for me just not close enough. It fell off after a couple of frames, no not the tips fault either my super glue gel is getting old or my ferule is no longer flat on the top (I think this is the case), glued it back on with a friends regular super glue and carried on playing. This is just some background to show how little chance I gave the tip to impress.

Here is the point, the tip felt really good from the first shot on. Now I would advise in most cases to give a new type of tip (or cue) time to get used to it, but when something feels great from the get go it just has to be a good sign. It felt good on the full range of shots and can't wait to give it a proper go next week now that I have properly re-set and shaped it. I hope that this will end up being the last tip I ever need to try as like many I am bored of re-tipping my cue every few weeks/month as I seem to chew though Elks.

Great job Adr on producing these tips.

Now all I need is a cue with a nice flexible shaft somewhere around 59-60 inches.

Table Lighting - help please !!!!

Hi

Our club has 5 tables, and currently is still using the traditional wooden canopies, using the old 150 watt tungsten bulbs

We are looking to replace these lights with something more modern

We have looked at the Peradon Luminaire lights, which do produce a good even light

Has anyone seen or had experience with the new LED panels for billiards tables ???

I've seen Nationwide Snooker Lighting are they any good ???

Any help would be great - thanks

Whose correct?

Hi Boys and Girls,

One player jaws the black which is the last ball on the table-ball stays on the table next to the pocket, however the white goes in off. This then puts both players on an equal score.

Player two places the white ball in the D to take his shot, however player that went in off states that the black ball has to be respotted.

Could somebody please clarify the rules here please?

Thanks

Newbie from Cambridgeshire

Hi everyone, my names Patrick I live in Ely which is about 16 miles from Cambridge. I play once a week for a 3-3.5 hour session in local social club which has the only snooker table in Ely. I used to play pool regularly for local pubs teams since my late teens and had a few years playing county aswell when I had no comitments but for last 2 to 3 years I just play snooker as I get more of a buzz out of it. Best break 46 missed a pink to get my first 50 up, that was a lot of years ago now and still grates on me!! 20s and
occasional 30s now and again at best but the thrill is still there for me.
Plenty to read on here and some good advice so kind regards to you all.

Sight Right App

I recently purchased a SightRight cue. These cues are expensive for what they are and the quality does not justify the price. The SightRight app offers a few freebie basic lessons. It offers additional lessons but these must be purchased. Seems a bit rich to sell over priced and average quality cues and then require buyers to pay for lessons. P.S. if you're thinking about buying a SightRight cue don't waste your money. Spend it on some decent coaching.

i play uk 8 ball with a cue i thinned down to 5/16" or 7.93mm in the new money i have been using this size for years but am always looking for things to improve my chances of winning which is why i switched to kamui black tips i look at youtube trying to keep in touch with technical inovations and feel like it's time to try carbon fibre as a ferrule material there are numerous sellers of carbom fibre tube in 8mm the reason i want to try this is i found by what experts on the internet say this minimises deflection or squirt when applying extreme spin to the cue ball and feel anything which helps minimize your chances of missing a pot has got to be worth trying i wonder has anyone tried this or am i just mad.

Mr Big Shat: what's his standard?

Are 'new' elks still inconsistent?

It's well known that Elkmaster tips appear to have lost the consistency that people once knew them for.

Whenever I've purchased tips, I've either bought some that have been repackaged and the box that I did buy was manufactured in 2007 meaning I may not have tried any new ones out.

I'm wondering if the tips they're producing now, in 2016, are still as inconsistent as ever. It seems very strange that they could get worse over time with seemingly no reason and I'm almost thinking that the subtle 'feel' players get from playing is what's actually changing instead.

My attempt at making a tip

After taking the bait last week in a thread I thought I'd have a pop at making a snooker tip for fun.

I deliberately didn't use any specialist tools etc and wanted to almost bodge it together to see how it would go in the knowledge you would have your worst results (it can only get better).

I wanted to find out a few things e.g.

1) Can I achieve a result that at least looks like a snooker tip?
2) Will it take chalk?
3) Does it stay intact after a few shots
4) Will it grip e.g. screw a ball etc
5) Will it fall apart

I'm still trying to work out what I learnt but too a few pics along the way. Here is the finished result (hopefully the link works!:

Obviously I would do things different but It felt good to have a go at something I clearly know naff all about...

Can we really judge the right spec cue for each of us?

Hopefully I'll get my point over right on this one!

I see all these players quoting the correct cue spec for themselves, getting it made and then selling it on. Now either their cue spec is wrong or the wood isn't acting the way they thought it would.

Is the process for choosing our cue spec floored? Surely the best way to find the right cue is to try many cues until you have narrowed your choice by play and then carry on testing until you choose the right one due to success rate.

Now at that point you could write the spec down for future reference but surely if you had one made to the same spec the cue would be different again. Hence that's why making a duplicate cue isn't the answer and pro's have looked for a cue like their old one and hey presto the replacement is different (cause it's a different piece of wood!).

Just be interested what people think?
Can we really judge the right spec cue for each of us?

Wider Stance

So I'm on the phone with maxi maker and he comes out with 'you need a wider stance and you need to forget foot-in-line and go out with the right foot'. I'm like, oh no, here we go with wide boxer but what could I say to a gold coach, former England snooker capitano? He's had hundreds of maxis, thousands of tons but Davis calls it my way. I just dunno, I really dunno; rock and hard place.

What's a snooker lover to do eh?

Potting

I have been watching a lot of the Barry Stark videos and have learned a lot from them.

However, I became quite confused with one of them on potting.

I have read a lot of thread/posts on here that refer to 'Ghost Ball' and 'Back of Ball' sighting when potting. In one of Barry's videos he specifically states NOT to aim for a particular spot on the object ball but you should play 'the line of the shot'. This can be seen in Barry's 'Potting Line Part 2' video.

I wonder if some of you more experienced members could explain this a little more clearly to this grey haired old codger please.

Many thanks.

I'm just asking for peoples opinions here

For me, some players have particularly pretty cue actions such as Lee and Ronnie. I think the pause and the ability to create really effortless power looks very classy.

What properties of a cue action do you believe makes it 'easy on the eye'?

far side of pocket?

when potting black off the spot, do you all aim for the black to pot at the far side of the pocket or the middle? i know the near pocket is not feasible. reason i ask is when i watch vids of pros potting blacks, they tend to pot the black at the far side of the pocket. wondering if this is like THE spot to get the black to pot much easier than other areas of the pocket (like the near pocket where chances of missing are higher)

G Cues Vs Master Craft

Hi guys,

Having just had a play with MW's Virtual Cue Maker I should like to know if anyone can share their opinion on the following.

Which cue plays the best, G Cue or Master Craft?

As some of you will know MW's Virtual Cue Maker enables the user to receive quotes from MW himself and MW recommended Cue Makers.
G Cue and Master Craft fall into the recommendations category. I simply can not afford a genuine MW Cue, but would like the next best thing if possible.

Your opinions will be appreciated!
Thanks
