Centuries in the World Chamoionship

So i was looking at the past 25 or so years (1990 onwards) at the world championship and how many centuries there are, and generally it's steadily risen. Last year there was the most ever, and this year it looks like it will be a similar amount.

My question is - Why are there more now than there were 20 years ago? Is it as simple as the fact players are better now than they were. Or is it that there are more top players now than there were. Or has tactics evolved into a more break-building style game? Be interested to know everyone's opinions.

Please see below for the statistics. I find the best stat to go by is the 'frames per century' one, as throughout the years there have been different formats etc.

Afternoon all!

Been an avid watcher and club player for some 25 years or so. Didn't know this site existed until someone put me onto it, really looking forward to joining in the discussion.

Loving the World Champs, terrific win for Ding - Truly hope he goes on to win it, still remember the idiots in the crowd who had a go at him when he lost to Ronnie, who incidentally told the perpetrators to sod off! Also special mention has to go to McManus, rolling back the years.

Anyway, looking to the final and the chat on here in the future.

Cheers,

Andy

Walter Lindrum's world record breaking cue 1932

Hi there,

Can anyone help me?

This was my fathers cue, he had it from new.

I found a book online that states its known as a "32 Lindrum" and that it was handmade by Peradon & co. It also has a "Morcues phone london" trademark crest on it; see below pictures.

Can anyone tell me any more about it?

Is it a rare cue?

Is it worth anything?

Love to find out more.

Thanks in advance

Cloth! Which way?

This is a slightly embarrasing question to have to ask, but my Google-Fu is failing me :(
Lovely new Hainsworth Elite Pro cloth to fit to my project table, however each side appears slightly different in texture. There's no marking to suggest which side is up. One side appears quite smooth, the other slightly more "rough" (as in the wool/stitching). Any clues to help this novice? :)

Hello, and a question from an elderly noob

Hi,
Happened to find your forum when searching for an answer to a question.
Back in the day when I was a competent club player I seem to remember that it was considered unsporting to create a snooker by rolling the cue ball up behind the object ball.
I know it's not against the rules but in the clubs and leagues where I played that kind of shot was not part of the repertoire.
However it seems that in the modern professional game it has become a potent weapon to be used whenever the cue ball ends up in baulk after a red has been potted.
Does professionalism demand that sportsmanship be abandoned?

A great final was played out between ex pro Darryn Walker and ladies world champ Reanne Evans. Great standard for the Midlands league. Here's the review of the match which included 3 centuries from the players.

Trevor White Cue & Crispian Jones North Wales Case (191855024298)

On Ebay

Trevor White 3/4 Cue with telescopic extension and mini butt

Just been re-grained and re-finished; so in excellent condition

Length 57 1/4 inches

Ferrule 9.3mm Kamui tip

Weight 18oz

Butt 30mm

Balance point 17inches

Ebony Butt

4 Splices of Rose wood

Lovely silky well balanced cue with a medium reactive shaft.

As you will know Crispian no longer makes these cases and Trevor's waiting list is at least 18 months

The North Wales case is in fair condition on the outside but very good condition on the inside, where it is most important, (I bought the case to protect the cue!) the flash photo's do make it look worst than it really is.

The hinges have lost their pins so I've inserted temporary ones as per the photo.

I would prefer pick up as the insured cost of sending this would be around £45.00 I'm guessing??

Firstly, hello :D

I was planning on selling this John Parris Master Cue on EBay. The listing had not been up for long before I received a message from someone telling me that it is a fake as it has been machine sliced. Having looked at it, I don't think it looks like it has been machine sliced but rather has been painted at points to make the lines look more straight, although that is just along the short edges, not the long.

I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination about these things so I thought I would come here and ask y'all your opinion.

General Enquiry Snooker Cue

I have a J P Mannock double-butted cue in original condition, with what appears to be the metal case from the same era, more than likely bought at the same time as the cue, which I want to sell. Can anyone advise on the best place to sell and get a true valuation of it's value. [I had been offered £300.00 from someone, but want to know it's true value before deciding to sell.

From my brief web research I believe that the cue could be from the 1930 - 1940s, but this is just an assumption of its age based on when the cues were originally manufactured.

The case is rather rusty and worn, but certainly adds value to this vintage snooker cue as it appears to be made by the manufacturer of the cue - Burroughes & Watts. This is a genuine sale as it was found in a friend's barn when clearing out. I don't have any interest in the sport, so shan't use it - hence the sale.

The cue has an inset made of mother of pearl with the words "ANTI GRIP CUE JP Mannock REGISTERED " inscribed. The cue dimensions :- approx 1475mm Long [58 1/8" long] 28mm [1 1/4" tapering to 11mm approx 3/8"]. 16 02 stamped on length of cue inlaid as shown in one of the images above.

Ronnie vs Williams 147 Miss

I was watching some Snooker Fun Trivia videos highlights last night and there was one clip (Ronnie vs Williams) in which Ronnie has potted 12 red and 12 black. The white was not in bad position and IMO he could have easily potted the next red with the rest and positioned himself on Black. But what happened was, Ronnie potted a red ball with a red (not white) ball and fouled.

I am not sure why he did so because there was not explanation of this clip. Furthermore I couldn't find much details about this on internet. Would anyone care to put some light as in what really happened there and why Ronnie did so?

Got my JPU today

Hi Folks

Well I finally took delivery of my JP Ultimate this morning woo hoo!!

Placed my order on the 31/07/2014 and received an email on the 15/04/16 to say it was ready for dispatch (unfortunately I had to wait a couple of weeks to rustle up the cash as the cash I had originally saved to pay for it was long since spent lol). So I was a wait of 21 months total which was not quite as long as expected.

I have put a link at the bottom for some pics if anyone is interested.

Ok so the specs:

Ultimate ash shaft with African ebony butt with four secondary splices of Bois de Rose.

Standard 3/4 butt at 16". SD joint fitted.
57.75" long.
10mm tip.
18.5oz.
29mm butt.

I also treated myself to a Parris patchwork case in red, black and grey as shown on their website.

So my initial impression: The cue has a lovely silky smooth but fresh finish (very different to the finish on my MW Black Legend which has been oiled a number of times now). Splice points are all even. The requested specs are bang on and the BP is ~ 16.5 inches. Four nicely spaced chevrons on the shaft down the line of sight. The four Bois de Rose secondary splices are quite dark and understated and IMHO beautiful. In my unexpert opinion this is a beautifully made cue and I cannot find fault with it at all. Unfortunately I cant get to the club to try it out until tomorrow to see how it plays (aaaaaarrghhh!!!) and that of course will be the acid test.

The case is quite substantial/robust, very well made and the leather used appears to be top notch. The locks are also reassuringly solid in construction. Plenty of room with a chalk compartment and another bigger one for accessories. My only criticism would be that the built in studs on the side to protect the leather are only on one side as opposed to both!

But overall I am a very happy camper at the moment. My initial feel is that this cue is right up there with my MW which I absolutely love but but we will see over the coming few weeks.

Cheers

Cuestars to offer Q School place

CUESTARS players will have a direct route to the professional circuit for the first time next season.

It was announced this week that the winner of the 2016/17 Cuestars South of England Championship Tour will be awarded a free entry into Q School.

Competition is expected to be fierce over the extended tour of eight legs.

World Snooker’s Q School is run every year soon after the World Championship. It consists of two best-of-seven-frame tournaments. All eight semi-finalists receive two-year Main Tour cards, meaning they will travel the world competing alongside players like Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump and Neil Robertson for £8m prize money.

Cuestars members Brad Chappell, Jack Smithers, Mike Finn, Nick Jennings and Sonnie O’Sullivan are among the 182 players who have forked out £600 each to enter this season’s Q School that starts on May 11 in Burton upon Trent.

There is no age restriction for Q School. However, World Snooker reserves the right to refuse entry to any player aged under 16. All English entrants must be members of the English Association of Snooker & Billiards, our national governing body.

Players not reaching the semi-finals in either tournament will be ranked according to the number of frames won. The highest ranked players will then be invited to make the numbers up in Main Tour events if some of the places are not taken up by the 128 current professionals - which happens a lot.

And that is how 15-year-old former Cuestars member Shane Castle found himself leading Mark Selby 3-1 in the first round of the 2013 UK Championship live on BBC TV on a Saturday evening. Selby eventually won 6-4.

There will be no cash alternative for the prize worth £600.

Frames to sponsor Cuestars tournament

A COULSDON snooker club frequented by a host of green baize stars on a daily basis has not taken its eye off the grass-roots game.

Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry and national treasure Jimmy White often practise at Frames Sports Bar along with resident professionals Marco Fu, Kurt Maflin and Michael Georgiou.

Tony ‘Tornado’ Drago and Chinese sensation Liang Wenbo are also weekly visitors at the Brighton Road club.

Despite rubbing shoulders with these household names, Tony Thompson, who bought Frames in January, 2012, has not got his head in the clouds.

The club, which has a junior pool and snooker section boasting more than 25 boys and girls aged seven and upwards, will sponsor a leg of next season’s Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold, Silver and Bronze Tours.

Thompson said: “I believe in getting behind the junior and amateur game as much as possible because without the youngsters the game has no future.

“I have always had a great passion for snooker. Many of my friends were top amateurs and pro snooker players back in the late 80s and early 90s. So I never really left the scene.

“The dream was to always own my own club and produce stars of our own.”

The 48-year-old, in partnership with world number 14 Fu, manages the careers of Maflin and Georgiou.

Table refurbishment from a DIY perspective

This is probably going to be a bit of an "Anti-Geoff" thread! Not against the good man in any way, but closer to "tales of how a snooker table probably shouldn't be refurbished" ;)

As per one of my first posts, I bought an antique Riley 6 foot table a while ago. Very pleased with it, but it's had it's fair share of wear over the years and by the looks of it the last time it was recovered, it didn't appear to have been done particularly well. The cloth sits well and is tacked in well, however little things like the pocket brass screws being driven into the wood at an angle. *shudder*.
I'm far from an expert, this is my first time, however I like to research, take advice and learn, all whilst taking as much care as possible.
The one thing going against me is lack of money, so this is something I'm doing slowly and on a budget!

At the back end of last week I ordered replacement cloth from Hainsworth - things are tight enough that I couldn't stretch to a Strachan, but as this will mostly be used by myself practicing and my friends playing pool, it's probably for the best. I also took the opportunity to buy some new rubbers. Again, couldn't afford some nice Northern Rubber but what I've bought should hopefully be considerably better than what looks to be the original rubber on the table, which feels particularly stiff and fragile.

The rubbers are coming today (I love DPD and their tracking!) and the cloth tomorrow, so thought I'd make a start by surveying the damage.

All the cushions off. The difference in colour of the cloth under the cushions is amusing - once I'd scraped off the years of dust! Found a few nicks and tears under the cushions on the bed cloth here too. Wonder if that was a bad original fitment or if wear and tear can do that where cues aren't accessible?

There's some repairs having gone on here by the looks of things. I imagine the screws no longer bit in these two holes so they've been padded out with dowels (the screw went down the middle of these). I need to take time to consider how I'm going to refit those. Also noticed the original colour of the wood underneath the brasses. Rather nice! Will also research on wood restoration to see if anything is possible on limited/no budget.

As per previous posts, I'd started to gain some interest in the history of the table & cues. Wondered if there was any significance to "Huddersfield" being written on this - is that reference to the place, or are the indistinguishable letters the initials to a name?

Similarly, got a closer look at the serial number on the bottom of the cushions. On closer inspection, rather than just being an upside down 7 as I'd previously thought, it looked to be more of a made-up 4 - perhaps they didn't have a 4 stamp, or only had stamps for numbers they couldn't otherwise make up?

Still, very pleased to see the serial numbers match on all 6 of the cushions.

The next job on the list is to hunt for an extremely cheap oak or oak effect dining table, firstly to borrow the legs from (this is a table-top table) to convert it to a proper table, and secondly to convert the top to be able to cover this with. This sits in an enclosed gazebo with plastic roof, so sunlight pours in all day - the cloth would fade nearly instantly if not covered!
I'd also like to refurbish the pocket brasses and leathers. The brasses could probably be brought back to life with Brasso and a polish, however I may smile nicely at some friends working in the local shoe factories to see if they can make me up some leathers.

All comments & suggestions welcome, including criticism!
Table refurbishment from a DIY perspective

Ex-pro retains Cuestars Seniors title

PORTSMOUTH singles champion Mike Talmondt has retained his title on a regional circuit for players aged 40 and over.

The ex-professional secured top spot on the Cuestars South of England Seniors Tour before a ball was struck in anger at the seventh and final leg at The Crucible Sports & Social Club, Newbury.

“It’s just nice to play a bit of tournament snooker,” said Talmondt.

“I’m happy about it this year because obviously it’s harder with Matt (Ford) playing. The standard is definitely impressive. It’s been good.

“Matt’s won the Championship Tour. He’s done really well to win that. He plays aggressive snooker and scores heavy.

“I’m pleased to get one up on Matt, that’s for sure.”

The 43-year-old, who is planning to enter the Championship Tour next season, said playing in Cuestars events is a little different from the pressures of the cubicles at the Norbreck Castle Hotel, Blackpool, where the professional qualifying rounds were held in the 1990s.

“It could destroy you if you were not used to it,” he said. “When you’re playing for a living, it’s a lot different from just coming down here for a knock on a Sunday.

“You’ve got to try not to think about it. Just play your natural game and try to play as if it means nothing.”

Talmondt, now based at The Craneswater Snooker Club and driving a taxi for a living, said his best result on the pro-circuit was beating Ryan Day (now the world number 20) 5-2 in the second qualifying round of the 1998 World Championship.

“I played really well that day,” he added.

Talmondt made his Seniors Tour debut in October, 2014, and has not missed one of the 13 tournaments over the past two seasons. He has won six events and only once failed to qualify for the knockout.

He ended this season 23 points clear of former champion John Hunter (Andover). Ford (Bracknell) was two points further back.

Round-robin groups of four in Newbury meant that even if Talmondt had lost all three games, he’d still collect enough rankings points for an uncatchable lead.

In the event, he actually topped his group, beat Martin Wallace (Reading) 2-0 in the last-eight and lost 2-0 to the eventual tournament winner Nick Birney (High Wycombe) 2-1 in the semi-finals.

A total of 39 different players competed this season. The 2016/17 tour will be extended to eight legs.

Spinster Grip Tip review

If anyone is thinking of trying these chalkless tips, then think again, to say they're awfull would be being kind, no feel at all, its like trying to play with a marshmallow on your ferrule they're so soft, it does grip but grips far too much pulling and throwing the white all over, unless you buy them to exclusively play masse shots which they are good for, then dont bother!

TSF cue tip review!

Hi all just tried the TSF soft tip, the tip is tan almost orange in colour which I personally prefer to black, and is 6 layers of pig skin, I fitted the tip to a 9.25mm ferrule allowing it to flare out slightly, they're very easy to trim with a stanley knife, however it did take a while to shape, anyway on to how it plays, it holds chalk extremely well, better than I expected actually, plenty of grip and very resonsive with a nice solid hit, feels quite firm but bites the cue ball, all in all I'm impressed, definately worth a go guys and girls.

Best old table?

Hi guys,

I'm looking for some advice regarding purchasing a second hand snooker table.

I've been lucky enough to have had my own table at home for a few years now and it's time for an upgrade.

Ideally I’d like to find a table that needs refurbishing as it's something me and my Dad have been talking about doing together for years.

I've read every thread in the table section on here about second hand tables and have managed to get myself completely confused!

I really love the look of older tables compared to tables with painted legs like the Aristocrat and Star tables.
I much prefer a nice old turned leg, so older, at least in appearance is one decision made.

I also would prefer older Welsh or Irish slate.

Steel block cushions on the other hand, I'm not so sure?
If there was a fantastic table that didn’t have them, I defiantly wouldn’t let it put me off.

Another concern is the option to upgrade the pockets for today’s style of play, no one likes playing a perfect split only for the blue to be spat back on to the table!
Also, adjustable slate supports?
I have no idea if some old tables can’t be up graded?

So basically, I think it's,
  • An older style table.
  • Turned legs.
  • Welsh or Irish slate.
  • Option to upgrade pockets.

I'm in no rush as I messed up when I bought my last table, I want to take my time and be on the lookout for the right table this time.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

I am selling a John Parris Elite cue. It is 54", 17.5oz and is 3/4 length. The shaft is stiff.

I had this cue shortened from 57" but can't get on with it. Please note that the mini butt I bought does not fit. I have the receipt and the cue comes with a cue towel and a Cue craft aluminium case. It would make a great cue for a shorter player or junior.

The price is ?260. UK buyers only.

Birney's two-year wait over

HIGH Wycombe star Nick Birney admitted it had been a “long wait” to win his first event on the Cuestars South of England Seniors Tour for two years.

But the 46-year-old was one stroke of fortune from making a group-stage exit in the seventh and final leg of the 40-plus circuit at The Crucible Sports & Social Club, Newbury.

Birney cleared the last five colours to take the opening frame of the final on the black to counter a 30 break by Neil Herd and left his Frome-based opponent needing snookers with one red left in the second.

Herd had dispatched first time semi-finalist Paul Stenning (Southampton) 2-1 to progress to his first Seniors final for 27 months.

Speaking after his 2-0 victory, Birney said: “It’s been a long wait. I’ve been putting in a bit of practice lately so I was hoping to do well today.”

But he added: “I should have been knocked out by Paul Lawrence. In the last frame, he missed the black all together.”

Indeed. Birney lost his first round-robin match 2-1 to Southampton’s Ram Birring, beat Herd 2-1 and edged his third game 2-1 on the final black after Lawrence, also from Southampton, completely missed it.

Birney, who is based at High Wycombe’s Liberal Club and won the Seniors Championship play-off in 2011/12, then accounted for this season’s runner-up John Hunter (Andover) 2-1 and newly-crowned champion Mike Talmondt (Portsmouth) by the same score in the knockout rounds.

Reflecting on life on the Seniors Tour, he said: “I’ll be back. I love it.

“I love competing against Matt (Ford) and John – and even Wayne (Muddiman). Anybody can beat anybody on their day.”

It was at Woking Snooker Centre on April 27, 2014, that Birney beat Neil Carroll (Rownhams) 2-0 to win his last final. And he had beaten Herd 2-1 in the last-four.

Before the event in Newbury, Ford was presented with his Championship Tour trophy – and then crashed out in the group stages.

Judd trump alignment and cue action

Iv noticed watching judd trump today that on most shots he tends to align the cue to the right ( his right) of the target then as he delivers the cue he swipes the cue visibly make to straight in line. If you watch you can see the tip of his cue moving from aligned to his right to straight in line on most shots. Peter ebdon is first commentator I have heard notice this too. He was saying it is to do with his right eye dominance playing left handed and is the reason he can miss long power shots near the cushion. I vaguely seem to remember Jimmy White had a similar side swipe in his cue action. By contrast watch ding who seems to cue dead straight through the White. Seems to work for judd though was just an observation!

Table spots

Random question of the day :D I have a new Hainsworth cloth coming for my 6 footer, and something's been bugging me.
The majority of the spots people use appear to be the little stickers. Why stickers as opposed to, say, penned on like the baulk lines?

Hello guys

Hi all. Can't believe I didn't know this forum existed until now! I'm an amateur snooker fanatic, play twice a week and luckily if I hit a 25!
Hello guys

Thicker cloths = less kicks ?

It's well known that the balls kicked less on the cloths used in the 70's and 80's with a heavier nap but the downside is the red's don't split so easily. It begs the question, what is more important? I would have thought a level playing field with fewer kicks albeit less frequent century breaks. It would also aleviate some of the problems of "big bounce" cushions. Also, are the balls used now lighter than those used in the 80's?

Help advice with break building / shot selection

Hi
After advice with scoring and shot selection. Ive been playing up to about 10 hours per week mostly solo. Im making the odd century but struggling for consistency ~ particularly with shot selection, execution and general scoring. Seem to choose wrong red or execute it in wrong way and break down half the time when i should be scoring more in the balls...
Any suggestions or advice ?

Confused about the right cue specs

Hi,

I'm confused about what the right cue specs are for me. I shortened a 57" cue to 54" but it didn't feel right. Also, I am 5ft 3 and having such a short cue made it awkward to reach for a lot of shots.

I am looking for advice. I am wondering whether I would be best off with a longer cue, say 56 inches, but with a high balance point, so it feels ok when I'm holding it several inches up from the butt.

I would appreciate anyone's advice, thanks.

Few Rules Clarification!

I was watching Ronnie vs Ding 2007 Masters Final today and there were few rules I was really not sure about. Just wondering if snooker community can put some light on it.

1. Ball Re-Spot:
In one of the frame, black ball was potted but all the colors positions were occupied. Ideally, if all the color spots are occupied then ball should be placed as close as possible to the top cushion from its spot but the referee placed the black just below the pink ball..not sure why this happened.

2. Foul & Miss:
Need some details on this. In which situation this rule applies? In one of the frame, safety play was going on and Ronnie tried to nudge the red bunch gently but missed the touch - here there were few others risky red visible so in case I understand why referee called it Foul & Miss. But in frame 7, Ding snookered Ronnie just behind black and only pink was available. The white was entirely hidden behind black and pink was not visible at all. Here again Ronnie tried to hit pink but missed so its a foul but why is it a miss?

How Do I Become a Better Loser?

Whenever I watch snooker, and the match is over, the losing player always extends his hand to the winner. In post match interviews, they almost always have great things to say about their opponent. While I don't throw tantrums, I can definitely be a sore loser at times. I am very competitive and hate losing, so when I do lose, I feel like it's always because I didn't play to my standard.

Maybe it's deeper than that, but I'm no psychologist.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can improve in this area?
