cue re varnish

hi

i have an old peradon & Fletcher cue which has always had what looks like cracked varnish on the top section - its been like this for about 30 years but i now wish to repair it. i wish to remove the current coating
( glass paper ? ) and re finish it with something (!) any thoughts?
