A useful resource for the forum?

Good morning, gentlemen.

I have noticed in the past, when chatting about a particular situation on the snooker or pool table, it can often become confusing for the reader to decipher exactly what an author intends. I have a simple template of a pool table and balls (as per the example below) in a basic paint program that can be manipulated to suit and saved to an IMG file for pasting to message boards.

Wouldn't it be great if a forum had this facility in-built? I'm no computer whizzkid so such a function might be horribly difficult to create for all I know, but just thought I'd put the idea out there for discussion.

Hi from Ceredigion!

Hi there. Just thought i`d say hello!
I actually started playing snooker about 40yrs ago along with a fair bit of pool! Then work and women came along, and didn`t play anything until a couple of years ago.
Started back playing pool about 2 years ago, but now back playing snooker after my son expressed an interest! Now all i need to do is find a bit of form! :)
Hopeing to find a few tips on here!

Hi from Ceredigion!

The ball collecting thread.

Good afternoon, gentlemen.

I promised to post up some photographs of my billiard ball collection in my introduction and, as a few kind folk showed an interest, decided to start this thread. I am afraid, like many collectors, I now possess an embarrassing number so will ration the posts to a few a week.

Cheerio.

Hello From Leicestershire

Hi everyone,

I've got a few questions about going/joining a snooker club and playing tournaments.

As a kid I spent many a hours in the freezing cold garage on a small table playing against myself while trying not to knock paint tins off the shelf while playing shots from the side cushion.

Now 27 I would like to get back playing on proper full size tables but am a little apprehensive/lacking in confidence. I've only ever played on a full size table once when I was a kid and lived in a different city.

I now live near Coalvile, leics. What snooker clubs would be best for me to take a look at in this area? I've been to Spot on Loughborough with my brother in law a few times but that is just to play pool.

As I'm new to the area and my brother in law has since moved away I would be going to play on my own, is this alright/allowed?

Are there local leagues/tournaments that I could sign up for when I've got back into it and more confident on the table?

Last question: 2 pc or 3/4 pc cue? Looking at getting a half decent cue but not really sure where to start, last one I brought was £16 from JJB!

Thanks for any help.

Laminate tips issue

Hi I have now tried after reading people raving about ho good laminate tips are and have tried 3 now an adr147 a talisman and kamui -all been different hardness and always find they give a tin sound on them.today I tried the talisman soft and it had an awfully sound to it and it neber last long on the cue as I ripped it of and put a mw tip back on
Is this a common issue with these laminated tips and also with the adr147 I found it neber took chalk well

Hello I'm new to the forum 😀

Hello I am Stephen from Manchester but live in Scotland. I predominately play English pool however I am looking to play snooker because I feel it is the ultimate test in cue sports. I would like to improve upon my highest break of 38. I just recently purchased a cue from adr147 and I will review that in the cues section.

Ambigrammatic pool balls.

Good afternoon, gentlemen.

I'm working on designs for a set of ambigrammatic pool balls to accompany a book. Thought you might be interested to see my progress so far: the cueball (whitey) and the yellow are coming along nicely; the red is still on the drawing board.

Any thoughts welcome.

Need some help with a few rules

Hi can anybody clear a few scenarios ,

1 A player nominates the green after potting a red , hits the green then the white hits the black and the white goes in the pocket how many points does the opponent get ?

2 Both players are tied on points , only colours are left to pot , player pots the yellow and the white follows on into the pocket as well , does the yellow get re spotted or remain in the pocket ?

Would love to know some info and history and why they havent got a offical britannia website.

Shortening a cue by 2" or buying a new cue

I bought a John Parris cue just before christmas. It is 57" but it is too long for me. It is a lovely cue, the elite model with tulip wood, but to fit me it probably needs shortening. I saw a coach at the south West Snooker Academy today and he thought I needed a length of 55". I am 5ft 4 by the way or maybe more like 5ft 3.

John Parris did say to me that if I wanted it shortening then I could send it to him and he would shorten it but I'm wondering whether I might be better to have a new cue made up for me at 55" and sell my existing cue.

Matching ebony with ebony

I've got an old maple cue with ebony butt that I had lengthened years ago with 4 further ebony splices. the ebonies are very slightly mismatched.

I'm going to get the cue refinished and wondered if there was a way (not painting!!) to get a uniform jet black finish for all of the splicing so it's impossible to see it was altered?

Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers

Double Baulk

If you are double baulked it's perfectly fine to just roll your ball up the table making no attempt to hit anything, as such a deliberate foul.
So what happens if you just roll your ball in the baulk area ?

Is it wrong to hate pool players?

Just about every topic of late has one of our resident saggy pocket loving drivel spouting idiots preaching how we should all play our beloved game, and more worryingly advising our newer members how to play, usually by way of cut and paste.
As we have now cut all links with this inferior game, can we not also banish its preachers to the pool forum where they can all bang their big balls together and dance around their tiny tables?
This isn't a racist thing, it can't be as I don't have a clue where they come from or what frigging language there speaking half the time, I'm not keen on English pool players either, mainly because they keep selling me cues I can't use!
You wouldn't get a rugby player telling an american football player how to play, or a tennis player reprimanding a badminton player, and snooker and pool are just as far apart.
Snooker is the most horrible beautiful game in the world, and only those that play it will ever understand that, it can not and should not be compared to pool!

Rant paused (certainly not over!)

Hallo from Ireland!

North of Ireland, but not Northern Ireland. Letterkenny - Donegal, high break of 15 (red, black, red, pink), playing for maybe a month with a basic BCE cue, and I'm starting with a rules question. After about 30 minutes of playing, my bridge hand gets very grippy and my cueing goes leftwards, since I also do a lot of bowling I have fabric tape that goes on the back of my thumb for a smoother release (this is the tape in question)

Would I be allowed to apply it to my hand between the index and thumb, so the cue is on the tape instead of skin?

If snookers are needed rule

Hello,
I need some help with a rule..
In case a player needs 2 or more snookers to be able to win the match, are those snookers supposed to be different ones, or can he make the opponent re-take a shot ( from a snookered position) as many times as he wishes?

Thank you.

6 Red Snooker penalty

The rule in 6 Red Snooker is: "A player cannot snooker behind a nominated colour at any time"
The scenario is: Play A nominated the black (after potting a Red), misses the pot and the Black ends up snookering
the remaining Red/s.
The question is: What is the value of the foul? Is it 4 (the ball on) or 7 (the snookering ball)

Also, if just the Pink and Black remain as in Section 3 Rule 12 B) (ii) snookering is permitted.
In 6 Red Snooker is this now not allowed?

Hello from sunny south wales

Ford eyeing double delight

BERKSHIRE snooker ace Matt Ford is on course for a unique double.

Exceptional long potting helped the 40-year-old from Bracknell secure the fifth leg of the Cuestars South of England Seniors (40+) Tour.

Ford also leads the Cuestars Championship Tour – and no one has ever lifted both titles, let alone in the same season

He replaced defending champion Mike Talmondt at the top of the Seniors rankings after a 2-1 victory over Richard Swaffield in the final at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club.

Ford took an eight-minute first frame with runs of 39 and 42 - and restricted his opponent to nil points.

Salisbury-based Swaffield levelled the match on the blue but needed snookers with two reds left in the decider. He admitted that Ford’s excellent long potting was the key factor.

“Long potting is my strength,” said Ford, clutching his £120 prize money. “I’ve never had coaching. I’ve been playing the game for a long time now and it’s always come naturally to me.

“I was pleased because I’ve been playing well all day so it was nice to play all right in the final. I’ve lost a few finals recently (the previous two he had been in) so it’s nice to win.”

Indeed. He dropped just one frame all day. And he had gained a “bit more confidence” three days previously by beating his Championship Tour rival Ryan Mears in the final of the Byfleet league’s individual knockout.

Talmondt crashed out in the group stages for the first time in his Cuestars career. The ex-professional from Portsmouth lost 2-0 to home club player Ram Birring in his second match and finished third in his group on frames difference

“That was a surprise,” said Ford, trying desperately to suppress a smile.

But he added: “I’m sure Mike will come back with all guns blazing.”

On his Cuestars debut, Birring progressed to the last-four before coming up against Ford. Nick Birney (High Wycombe) suffered his second successive semi-final defeat.

Paul Stenning, who turns out for Park Gate RBL A in Southampton’s Super League, compiled the day’s highest break of 92 - against Paul Lawrence, who happens to play for Park Gate RBL B.

Third-placed John Hunter made a 2-0 quarter-final exit to Swaffield, who had also lost in the final of the previous leg in Swindon and climbed to fourth.

The 30-strong field was split into six groups of five with only the group winners and the two best runners-up qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Woking Snooker Centre hosts the sixth leg of seven on Sunday, March 27.

BREAKS

Paul Stenning: 90.
Matt Ford: 66, 65, 62, 61, 57, 48, 48, 42.
Nick Birney: 61, 56, 54, 48.
Richard Swaffield: 60, 50, 41.
Christopher Howie: 56.
John Hunter: 50, 45.
Mike Talmondt: 48, 47.
Martin Hill: 45, 43.
Chris Stocker: 45.
Ram Birring: 40.

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP POSITIONS

GROUP A: 1st, Richard Swaffield (Salisbury SC); 2nd, Steve Ashton (Salisbury SC); 3rd, Stephen Hills (Traders, Northfleet); 4th, Nick Miles (Ashlett Club, Fawley); 5th, Jonathan Walker (The Potting Shed, Aldbourne).

GROUP B: 1st, John Hunter (Salisbury SC); 2nd, Neil Carroll (Chandler’s Ford SC); 3rd, Richard Arnold (Salisbury SC); 4th, Martin Hill (Salisbury SC); 5th, Peter Chin (Woking SC).

GROUP C: 1st, Ram Birring (Chandler’s Ford SC); 2nd, Jon Monckton (Woking SC); 3rd, Mike Talmondt (Copnor SC, Portsmouth); 4th, Paul Bateman (Crucible, Newbury); 5th, Chris Stocker (Sunninghill Comrades Club, Ascot).

GROUP D: 1st, Jean-Marc Bancilhon (Camphill Social Club, West Byfleet); 2nd, Terry Azor (Chandlers Ford Central Club); 3rd, Ron Threadgill (Jesters, Swindon); 4th, Alan Thomas (Jesters, Swindon); 5th, Ray Mears (Sovereign SC, Farnborough).

GROUP E: 1st, Matt Ford (Sunninghill Comrades Club, Ascot); 2nd, Wayne Muddiman (Chandlers Ford Central Club); 3rd, Trevor Thorn (Basingstoke Cons); 4th, Martin Luker (Jesters, Swindon); 5th, David Stewart (Chandler’s Ford SC).

GROUP F: 1st, Nick Birney (Liberal Club, High Wycombe); 2nd, Paul Stenning (Park Gate RBL); 3rd, Christopher Howie (Shirley Cons); 4th, Martin Wallace (Crowthorne RBL); 5th, Paul Lawrence (Park Gate RBL, Southampton).

KNOCKOUT RESULTS

QUARTER-FINALS (£15, 12 points): Birney 2 Bancilhon 1, Swaffield 2 Hunter 0, Birring 2 Carroll 0, Ford 2 Azor 0.

SEMI-FINALS (£30, 15 points): Swaffield 2 Birney 0, Ford 2 Birring 0.

FINAL (£120/£60, 25/18 points): Ford 2 Swaffield 1.

Any thoughts on this cue

I am always gonna be looking other cues that catch my eye,
I just saw this for sales, has anybody had any experience of them.....?

I really like the look of the cue, it just needs finishing as the finish seems
to be matt, that is something I can do no issues, but the cue is not expensive,
it may be worth just chucking a little money at it if I find it plays well....

Dave

Any thoughts on this cue

Value of an 'Ultimate' shaft

I'm curious why some are prepared to pay a massive premium for an 'Ultimate' or similar shaft? Are these made differently to the 'non-Ultimate' variety? Or do they just look prettier with the 'evenly-spaced arrows that are often mentioned? All these modern shafts must come from the same manufacturing process but there's a massive mark up once a cue-maker classes them as 'Ultimate' or 'Selected' etc. Do most of the players that buy these cues expect them to improve their game or are they bought just as investments to sell on for a quick profit?
Are we just buying into the 'designer mentality' where we pay a huge price for having a sought after item that could be classed as a status symbol. Apparently Ronnie O'Sullivan uses a cue such as this but would he play just as well with a cue that sells for a quarter of the price? Just a though.
Value of an 'Ultimate' shaft

chalk

Hi any advice on what chalk to use on a mw super tip .thanks
chalk

Mike Wooldridge Tiger

My MW Tiger arrived on Monday so thought I would give my review of it.

i couldnt find a fault with it. Not that I expected too but normally on 99% of cues the splicing are noticeably different lengths. Not on the Tiger.
The finish was silky smooth. But the real surprise was how good it felt. Mike claims to have the best playing cues around and I can't argue with him. The cue feels so good when hitting the ball. I was worried that it would take a while for me to get used to but after a couple of hours it was like I had been playing with it for years. I played a match on Thursday night and the cue got a lot of praise. Especially the shaft, as seen in the pictures the shaft has nice evenly spaced chevrons that look great. The MW super tip that comes as standard is awesome. It holds the chalk better than any tip I have used before.
I highly recommend buying a cue from Mike because you will not be disappointed.

Another reason I went for an MW cue was that I found very few negitive reviews on his cues. Unlike other top cue makers. I had done a lot of research over the last 8 months especially on eBay and found only 2 MW cues for sale in that time. Unlike the many other top brand cues that are constantly being sold for various faults.
