Snooker glasses : a review

For the past few years I've been using a cheap pair of snooker glasses bought off ebay for £40; they were kind of OK, but I had issues with focus when right down on the cue, object ball was out of focus. When stood up my vision was excellent but down on the cue it changed, I obviously wasn't looking through the focal point of the lens, tried changing the height of the lens by adjusting the nose pieces but it didn't help.

Kind of had to play with my chin about six inches off the cue, could then see OK but all too often I went straight to my normal position and then moved my head to sight the object ball, movement meant missing, remembering to cue six inches off the cue meant a thought in my head that was getting in the way of relaxing through concentration, getting into the zone of no thought.

So I decided to get a bespoke pair of snooker glasses made for me, only one option open to me was through the internet as no optician in my area did anything other than normal specs. I found the Snookerspex website and sent an email detailing all my problems, got a telephone call from opthalmic optician Chris Cheshire the proprieter, we talked about myself, he wanted to know my physical dimensions, my level at the game, what I felt was the problem, and after he said he could help me.

I couldn't visit in person as he was too far away, so I had to send him my prescription, three photos of myself, two of my snooker stance, one side on and one from the front, plus one of my face with a ruler held above my eyes to determine measurement. This I did and chose rimless specs and lightweight lenses, price was £258, then I waited, three weeks and they arrived yesterday and out I went for a game.

At first they were no different than my cheap ones, and I had to alter the height with the nose pieces until I found the precise position (and it was very precise) that gave me the same vision I had right down on the cue that I had standing up. Absolutely no refections from the lights in the lenses, good vision both close in and distance and I started to play, at first badly as I was thinking all the time, but after a while I stopped thinking and just played, and played quite well indeed, no big breaks but very consistant, chin down on the cue and didn't have to move my head, and I'm feeling very confident that my game will, well not improve as such, I'm too old for that, but maybe I can be as good as I was more often.

I would recomend them to anyone who has vision problems.

Ferrule help please.

I have a Ton Praram cue but when re-tipping it for the second time the ferrule came loose, I don't know if it was me being clumsy or if it was not very secure from the factory, I've re-tipped my cues loads of times and never had this problem. Anyway I thought it would be an easy job just to superglue it back on and did so, the ferrule is now nice and firm but I'm not 100% happy with the angle as it looks slightly off. I'm not sure if I should have used superglue (should have asked here first but a bit late now), any tips on how to remove it again and get it back on properly level? I'm hoping I don't have to cut the ferrule off as the cue is short enough as it is, I wish I had ordered it an inch longer. Thanks.
Ferrule help please.

high breaks etc

Me again!

I've read this and other snooker forums a lot and many posters speak of things like "just a standard 50 break club player"....

It seems online I see lots of 50 breakers or even centurians.

At the 2 clubs I've been at, haven't seen a single 50 being potted. there was one lad who apparently made 80 once. All the players at my club don't seem to regularly knock in tons or 50s. They are all like me or slightly better 20-40ish. Many of the refereed matches I've seen on the next table....no one is knocking past 50, even the better players.

To me, a 50 break player is a Damn good snooker player. It took me 3 years to get to regular 10-25 standard. Where are all the 80 breakers in clubs? I cant seem to find any.

Perhaps people who OWN tables are far ahead of club players....or do people exaggerate a bit online?

Help with tip and chalk for UK 8 ball

I recently started getting into playing pool again while at university, and after buying my own cue and joining the local team, i thought joining a forum to see what ideas/thoughts people shared about the game, so here I am.

When i first bought my cue it came with a tip that got damaged in transport, so i ordered some Elks off ebay, I must have gone through about 10 tips before i found one that felt nice and was to my liking. As i play quite a lot (20-30 hour a week) the tip wore down over quite quickly, and then needed replacing. At this point i only had a few Elk tips left, i fitted them all and none of them where to my liking. So I found another forum post on here that recommended ADR147 supersoft tips for pool, so I ordered some and i'm currently waiting for them to arrive.

Another semi issue in my game at the moment is getting lots of kicks. I have a feeling it's down to my chalk and leaving chalk marks on the white that rub off on the object ball. I've been using triangle chalk since I started playing, but I've notice I leave very big chalk marks on the white ball after playing every shot (probably twice as big as everyone else at my club), hence i was wondering if this is down to the chalk i'm using or my method of application/ applying too much/ shape of my tip?

rule questions

Hi folks,

1. If your opponent fouls and the white is left either touching or v close to colour giving you a free ball, can you hoist your cue in air like a spear and decent until tip brushes ball? (Provided either hits ob, play away from touching ball and no push). You can get a very small contact this way....I'm not convinced it's legal but my opponent swears it's fine.

2. I have an occasional opponent of lesser standard who tries to put me off by hovering around me, putting hand on table over my potting pocket them tries to insinuate I'm being fussy when I ask him to just sit in the chair. This isn't just getting ready to pick up the ball but a deliberate attempt to unsettle me. Do the rules prohibit touching the table or hovering around pocket?

3. What is the best perspective for judging a free ball? I find if you look from shot end, it doesn't look like you can hit both sides, yet if you view the shot from the other side (ob end) it often looks on! This has caused arguments. How is this best decided?

The Masters 2016 10-17 January

It's nearly time for what I personally consider to be the bee's knees tournament. Loaded with the top 16 players in the world (ranked at the end of the UK Championship), it's big match time from day one. The Pally welcomes Lian Wenbo after his marvelous run to the UK final, where he faced Robertson, who was in monster form throughout the tournament and is the red hot player of the season so far. Amazingly, The Masters will feature another first; Ronnie's inaugural tournament of 2015/16. When Ronnie last took so much time out, a whole season as it was, I backed him at 12/1 to win the World Championship, a nice earner and the most satisfying bet I've ever placed; me mates thought I was crazy! This Master's, the odds are not so generous on a perfect comeback, punters and the bookies are wise to Ronnie's long holidays, so the odds come in to 9/2 and he's slight favourite over Robbo. It's still amazing to have these odds on someone who has missed half the season doing exhibitions and enjoying time practicing with friends instead. Why someone with so much talent and ability to win tournaments would do such a strange thing is like asking why the sun comes up each day; it just does. As Dennie Taylor says; the beauty of Ronnie is you never know what he's going to do next, he's mesmerizing.

The Class of '92 all feature and their longevity again points to these three being true greats, perhaps the three most talented tournament players ever. For me, they embody the greatest all round player, the best match player and the best potter. And the usual suspects from the generation below are all there, though Ding's fall from grace sees him push out to 20/1, more than double his odds a couple of seasons ago. I don't see much value in Judd at 6/1, he was embarrassed at the UK by his standard but he can be black and white, rubbish at one tournament, incredible at the next, so maybe the bookies are wise? And being World Champion doesn't count much when form has dipped considerably, so Bingo slips down to 25/1. Mags is looking good value at 33/1; if he'd only fulfill some more of that fine cueing talent. Selby and Smurf can't be counted out as last year proved and they're sitting pretty as proper contenders at 8/1. I can't see Robbo being anything other than the cream on this pint of Masters gold top at 5/1 but I'm sticking a tenner each way on Wenbo anyway, he's in form and the odds are too generous to refuse.

Who's going to do well, who's going to make the semis and final, and who will triumph?

Best Odds on The Runners and Riders (Xmas day):

Ronnie 9/2
Robbo 5/1
Trump 6/1
Selby/Smurf 8/1
Higgins 14/1
Ding 20/1
Allen/Bingo 25/1
Mags 33/1
The Hawk/Fu 45/1
Tricky Ricky 50/1
Perry 55/1
MJW 66/1
Liang Wenbo 100/1

Masters Snooker 1st Round Draw

Shaun Murphy v Mark Allen
Barry Hawkins v Joe Perry
Judd Trump v Stephen Maguire
Neil Robertson v Marco Fu
Mark Selby v Ricky Walden
Ronnie O'Sullivan v Mark Williams
John Higgins v Liang Wenbo
Stuart Bingham v Ding Junhui

Incredibly, the first weekend features Ding on Sunday at 7pm, when China is in bed and Ronnie on Tuesday at 1pm, when the UK is at work. So that's the two big potential TV audiences of the first round scuppered. Great scheduling WS!

First or Second Crack?

Inspired by snookclops, I had a practice today and the intention was to try out Simon's second ball break. What I ended up doing completely unintentionally along the way was the second 'crack' grip, recommended to me some years ago by a snooker professional who reached semis of major tournaments. The cue (with the V ring grip) sits inside the second joint of the back fingers, instead of the first joint. I've played the cue with first crack grip for a few years now and one coach said a tighter grip was counter productive. I've tried the second crack grip before, but always found it too tight. This time round, I was able to open the fingers more in a relaxed way, with the cue staying in the second joints but not going offline on pull back or delivery. I did this by tightening the ring just a little bit, which stabilised the grip giving more freedom to the back fingers opening up without the cue going off line. To my surprise, this lead to straight cueing more of the time. There was no turning in of the wrist or turning out. It does feel like picking up a bar to hit someone a bit and with just a 17oz cue it does feel a tad overdoing things but my word, the accuracy and power is immense, particularly long and middle bag pots. A great revelation but nonetheless scary for obvious reasons.

Not sure what to do now!

Only red ball totally blocked

Hello people,
Question:
What if it's your turn and the only red ball left is totally blocked by the other colours?

Your favourite routines

Just thought I would start a thread to post favourite practice routines. Routines you will always do before moving on to more difficult ones.

I will always do these routines to start with.

1, pot 10 straight blues in the middle with top spin trying to stop as close to the pocket with the cue ball as possible.

2, same routine as number 1 but with screw back.

3, place all the balls in a line from black to brown ball in any order and pot them in any pocket in any order. I might do this 3-5 times depending on how I feel I'm cueing.

These are three easy routines that get me cueing nicely for the harder routines.

Carty ends year on a winner

ASHLEY Carty may be “pleased to end the year on a winner” but can he end his final season on the national under-21 snooker circuit as a winner?

The 20-year-old from Rotherham pocketed £350 after emerging victorious from the third leg of the EASB Premier Junior Tour at Cueball Derby.

He defeated last season’s rankings winner Brandon Sargeant in the final to close the gap on current tour leader Joe O’Connor (Leicester).

Carty struck the first blow with a 69 break in the first frame but his opponent from Stoke hit back with runs of 58 and 38 in the second followed by a 103 to take the lead.

A 58 from Carty in the next squared the match and he ran out a 4-2 winner.

“I knew I had to keep him tight as he’s a very good long potter,” said Carty. “I just had to battle and dig in for some parts of the match but I also took my chances when I got them.

“I went into the tournament very confident as I’ve been playing well in practice.

“I’m just really pleased to end the year on a winner.”

Earlier, he dropped just one frame in four group-stage matches and accounted for O’Connor 4-1 in the last-eight.

Elsewhere, Josh Thomond was given a lesson in cuemanship in his group-stage match against Sargeant. The Manchester potter scored just 16 points in three frames while his opponent knocked in breaks of 114, 94 and 102.

Sargeant still had his sights on the £40 high-break prize and he secured it with a sublime 128 in the first frame of his 4-2 semi-final victory over Richard Haney (Dudley). And, for good measure, he added runs of 44, 94 and 77 in the same match.

In the second semi and trailing Nico Elton (Sheffield) 3-1, Carty pulled one back on the final black and took the next two frames with breaks of 59 and 75.

The country’s best young players recorded 89 breaks of 50 or more, including ten centuries, over the two-day tournament.

The fourth leg of six is at Q’s Sports Entertainment Bar, Manchester, on April 2 and 3.

Glover cue wanted..........

I fancy trying a nice Glover one piece, prob owned cues from all the other 'premium' cue
makers, but for some reason never a Glover.

Specs-
57.5
9.25mm
17.5oz

Would prefer something with four splices, but will consider anything including spec very close to the above. If it comes with case and extensions all the better! Seen a few on Fleabay recently so please no silly prices :-)

Hitting the object ball too thick

I would say that an overwhelming majority of my missed shots are due to hitting the object ball too thick. Is this a common problem or am I just so bad?:p I have no problems with very thin cuts though but as I said, when I miss it's due to hitting it far too thick...

Are there any specific practise routines that I could do in order to "fix" this issue? Has anyone else experienced the same issues with hitting it too thick?

Five out of six for Talmondt

PORTSMOUTH’S newly-crowned singles champion has won his fifth tournament out of six on the Cuestars South of England Seniors (40+) Tour.

Taxi driver Mike Talmondt overtook Matt Ford at the top of the rankings after an up-and-down day at Salisbury Snooker Club.

The 43-year-old pocketed £100 following a 2-0 victory over Southampton Super League player Paul Lawrence.

First-time finalist Lawrence, who beat ex-pro Talmondt in the round-robin to top his group, failed to pot a colour after a red in the first frame but only lost it on the green. However, the second was wrapped up in 11 minutes.

“It was a very scrappy first frame,” admitted Talmondt. “It wasn’t great.”

The defending champion kicked off his rollercoaster day with an 82 in his first frame against Martin Wallace (Reading). He chalked up another 82 in his third match against Paul Bateman (Swindon) but, following a lengthy pause, lost 2-0 to Lawrence.

“I started well today,” he said. “Then I had a two-hour wait, went back on the table and couldn’t pot a ball.”

He then recovered from 1-0 down to account for Steve Ashton (Salisbury) 2-1 in the quarter-finals before seeing off three-time champion John Hunter (Andover) 2-0 in the last-four.

“I think I scored ten points in the first frame (against Ashton),” said Talmondt. “It wasn’t pretty.

“I played all right against John. Nothing outstanding, but I was potting quite solid.

“I’ve won five out of the last six tournaments so I’m happy with that.”

Elsewhere, the group of death took a long time to die.

Fawley accountant Nick Miles lost an epic two-and-a-half-hour best-of-three match to Ray Mears (Aldershot) but was undefeated in the remainder of his games and qualified for the knockout for only the second time in 23 outings over nearly four years.

Any two from five could have made the quarter-finals with the final two matches to play. Ashton and Miles progressed at the expense of Mears, Martin Luker (Swindon) and Stephen Hills (Northfleet).

Talmondt is seven points clear of shock group-stage casualty Ford (Bracknell) at the top of the rankings. Lawrence and beaten semi-finalist Wayne Muddiman, also from Southampton, are ten points further back in joint fourth.

The third leg of seven attracted a 22-strong field. Next up is Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon, on Sunday, January 31.

Pocket size for beginners

Hello,

Our club in Odense, Denmark recently expanded with two new Wiraka M1 snooker tables, which is really great. Now, to try and attract new members, we are talking about, opening up the pockets on one of our two old Riley tables. The corner pockets are around 8.5cm but they arent cut very friendly, meaning you almost have to be as precise as on our new Wiraka tables. We are talking about installing a piece of wood between the cushion and the slate to widen the pockets, is this way to go about this?

Which size do you recommend for both the corner pockets and the middle pockets, and which method would you recommend.

Thank you for your time.

New cue with square grip

Hello,

Is it allowed for the cue to have a square grip like this, with 4 facets?

Grip - wrist turned in

I recently videod my grip and my wrist is cocked in with my palm facing my body. Instead of running perpendicular to my arm handing from shoulder, the wrist is bent through 45 degrees inwards, with fingers more underneath.

I am considering changing to more orthodox but does anyone/has anyone suffered with this? Is it integral to poor cueing and should it be worked with or immediately corrected?

Thoughts?

Cheers

Brand New Will Hunt Green Plate cue with Certificate

Hi everyone

Hello Everybody,

I have been meaning to become a member of this fantastic snooker site for some time. Although I do not personally play snooker, I am an avid fan. It all happened in the summer of 1985 whilst getting lost along the north circular road around London trying to find my way to the M4 with 2 screaming children in the back of my car. I had to stop the car because I couldn't hear myself think. In those days we didn't have the luxury of a tom tom or other device to bring us to our destination, we had to fight with maps which were quite often far to big for the most of us, especially to look at it whilst being in the car, so I got out of the car and placed the map on the roof of my car so I could try and find out where I was, lots of people wearing head gear walking past my badly parked car totally oblivious to the situation I had found myself in! One of my first trips back to the UK after moving to the Netherlands in 1979 on my own in the car with 2 young children in tow. I had almost given up when a car pulled up behind me and a very nice looking gentleman came up and asked me if he could be of assistance to me, I just lost it, crying blurting out it had taken me all of 5 hours to get from Dover to this part of London and I didn't know where I was, and couldn't turn back even if I had wanted to, he was very kind even gave me his handkerchief to wipe my tears, he looked at my map and promptly turned it around, saying I was looking at it upside down 'women drivers' I muttered under my breath, little did he know I had looked at that map from all directions and still couldn't put a finger on where I was! Anyway to cut a long story short this very kind gentleman said in a cockney accent, which by the way I had to ask twice what he was saying, said "Lawd above! follow me, Im goin' around what way myself, I shall make sure yew get on da right road. , innit" I flung my arms around him jumped in my car and followed, afraid of losing him at every traffic light, oh boy what a lot of traffic lights, more panic! Just before we arrived at the turning for the M4 my 'white' night gestured with indicator to pull over, which of course I did without even looking to see what was behind me. My guardian angel jumped out of his car came over to mine and said "Gawdon Bennet! you'll be ok now, just follow da signs an' yew'll get onto da M4 an' I am sure yew'll find yaaahr way then, by da way me name is Jimmy, Jimmy White" I looked at him as if he was talking in Chinese or some other strange language, was I supposed to know this person? so I promptly gave him my hand and said "Hi Jimmy, thank you for all your help, by the way, my name is Janette, Janette Scharenborg, anytime you find yourself in Holland give me a call and I will buy you a drink for helping me today" I gave him my card, he was searching though his pockets, for something, maybe a card, no, out came a pen, then asking me "Gawdon Bennet! do yew 'ave somethin' I can write on" so I gave him the map which had caused this in the first place. Jimmy wrote his name and signed it saying "Blimey! one day dis signature'll be worf a lot ov money, when I win da world title what is. Nuff said, yeah?" I just said thank you and went on my way thinking, what a very strange man!

I arrived late at night at my friends in Cardiff we both put my kids to bed and we settled down to a nice gin and tonic, duty free always tastes that much better, and I began to tell her the story of this very strange man who had come to my help in the middle of London, her husband asking us to dim it as he was trying to watch the snooker! he was a massive snooker fan and played the game himself. Anyway when I came to the part about when Jimmy told me his name, Glen said WHAT YOU MET JIMMY WHITE THE LEGEND AND YOU DIDNT KNOW WHO HE WAS (actually he used a few swear words in that which I cannot repeat) You can imagine my surprise when I found out just who had helped me on that hot summer evening in the middle of London. So that was my introduction to Snooker. I also had the privilege of meeting our Jimmy once more in 1992 at the world snooker in the Crucible where he did a most fantastic 147 I nearly got thrown out for not being able to keep quiet or still!! It took a while before he remembered me, but he did. Yes I'm hooked on snooker, I watch nearly all televised games and have seen some hero's come and go, but for me JIMMY WHITE will remain my number one. :biggrin-new:

Cueing across please help

Hi everyone!

Greetings from the West Country. I'm a regular 15-20 breaker but I have finally begun doing White up the spots and it's clear I cue across and apply right hand side.

The ball lands to the left of the top cush and it straightens and comes back on the right.

Playing deep screw gives it a violent right hand side almost hitting side Cush.

I'm right handed and due to a very poor right eye, left eye Dom.

I have tried cueing through it a little to left but still not straight. If it's a med power it's reasonable but never back to cue, just back on right.

I could do this ok on another table with thicker cloths and worn out cushions. Right back to the tip. My current club has good finer cloths.

No idea what to do other than practice

Help!

Burroughes & Watts BURWAT Champion vs Riley Cue? Any good?

Hi guys,

I recently posted about the replica of the burroughens & Watts Ye Olde ash cue. That got me thinking about playing with a real genuine burroughes & watts cue so I have seen a BURWAT Champion for sale on ebay below. My question is does anyone have experience in playing with these cues? I hear that the Burwat is also a great playing cue as well as being collectible.

Also I hear the really old riley Tombstonecues are great players? One below also that looks to be in good condition.

Any thoughts on this cue would be good also if anyone knows much about old cues. If there is anything I need to look for or anything that jumps out please let me know.

Debut win for the remarkable Jack Smithers

An EPSOM-based England pool international who was given two hours to live as a premature baby enjoyed a winning debut on a regional snooker circuit.

Jack Smithers took full advantage of home tables at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon, to clinch the third leg of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour.

The 20-year-old overcame a spirited performance by fellow left-hander Bradley Cowdroy to prevail 3-1 in the final on a professional-standard Star table.

“I wasn’t expecting to win it so it’s a bonus that I did,” he said “Bradley played well all day. He beat me earlier on in the group stages. Fair play to him.”

Smithers - who represented his country at pool at various junior levels for seven years since the age of 12 - spent the first 98 days of his life in hospital after being born 14 weeks early, just two weeks after the legal limit for an abortion, weighing 1lb 14oz. That’s less than a bag of sugar.

He is now playing snooker full time for a year and targeting Q School next May.

“Snooker is progressing more than pool and the prize money is a lot better,” he explained.

“My grandad helps me out (financially). I’ll see how I get on. If it works out, great.”

Cowdroy emerged from a high-quality 16-strong field with his young head held high.

The 13-year-old from Bournemouth beat Smithers, James Budd (Fareham) and Callum McDonald (Salisbury) to win his group, clawed back a two-frame deficit to overcome Callum Browne (Westbury) 3-2 in the last-eight and accounted for English Under-16 champion Mark Lloyd (Gosport) 3-1 in the semi-finals.

Anthony Rice (Fordingbridge) recorded the day’s highest break of 70 against Matt Gillon (Gosport) in the group stages.

The fourth leg of eight is at Greenbaize Snooker Club, Bournemouth, on Sunday, January 10.

BREAKS

Anthony Rice: 70, 48.
Jack Smithers: 65.

Hughes hits purple patch on Star tables

STEVEN Hughes admitted he was forced to dig deep to claim his first winner's trophy on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour.

Sheer will to win propelled the 14-year-old from Chandler’s Ford over the line on challenging pro-standard tight tables in south London.

Hughes, who is sponsored by Vankru Cycling, utilised his renowned battling qualities to fight back from 1-0 down in both the last-four and the final of the third leg at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon.

After defeating Aidan Murphy (Bristol) 2-1 on a Star table, he repeated the feat against David Rice (Fordingbridge).

Hughes said: “I dug deep again and turned it around and won, which was amazing.

“It shows that I can compete well, especially on the tougher tables. They are very tough to play on. You have to be spot on all the time. There’s no room for error.”

Rice, who was chasing snookers with two reds left in the decider, said: “Steven is a credible winner.”

And the 20-year-old had also been forced to battle back himself to record an excellent 2-1 semi-final victory over the highly-rated Evan Plummer (Coulsdon).

He replied to Plummer’s 38 break in the first frame with a 37 in the next and secured the decider on the final blue.

It has taken Hughes - last season’s Bronze Tour rankings champion, who jointly leads the Silver rankings with leg-two winner Murphy - just three events to put himself in contention for promotion to next year’s Gold Tour.

“That would be very nice,” he said. “But at the minute I’m just trying to finish the season on a high.”

Hughes and Murphy may be in pole position but the race for the Silver title promises to be extremely close this season. Rice is one point adrift in third. Last season’s Bronze play-off champion Connor Benzey (Eastleigh) is only nine points off top spot and ten-year-old Oliver Sykes (Chandler’s Ford) is another four points further back.

The home club’s James Beavan recorded the day’s highest break of 46 in the group stages.

The fourth leg of eight is at Greenbaize Snooker Club, Bournemouth, on Sunday, January 10.

BREAKS

James Beavan: 46.
Oliver Sykes: 42.
Evan Plummer: 38, 36.
Olly Gibbs: 37.
David Rice: 37.

SILVER RESULTS

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP A: 1st, Harry Jones (Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon); 2nd, David O’Callaghan (Greenbaize, Bournemouth); 3rd, Olly Gibbs (Chandler’s Ford SC); 4th, Keegan Reed (Salisbury SC).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP B: 1st, Evan Plummer (Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon); 2nd, Steven Hughes (Chandler’s Ford SC); 3rd, Oliver Sykes (Chandler’s Ford SC); 4th, Adam Cowdroy (Greenbaize, Bournemouth).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP C: 1st, Kaine Petty (Salisbury SC); 2nd, Charlie Pringle (Chandler’s Ford SC); 3rd, James Beavan (Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon); 4th, Connor Benzey (Chandler’s Ford SC).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP D: 1st, Aidan Murphy (Bristol Conservative Club); 2nd, David Rice (Salisbury SC); 3rd, Ally Pollard (Salisbury SC); 4th, Nat Kidner (Greenbaize SC, Bournemouth).

QUARTER-FINALS (12 points): Rice 2 Jones 1, Plummer 2 Pringle 1, Hughes 2 Petty 0, Murphy 2 O’Callaghan 1.

SEMI-FINALS (15 points): Rice 2 Plummer 1, Hughes 2 Murphy 1.

FINAL (25/18 points): Hughes 2 Rice 1.

Two out of three ain’t bad for Tillison

PORTSMOUTH potter Ben Tillison has taken a commanding lead on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour.

The 15-year-old admitted to a “new-found respect” for professional snooker players after winning the final of the third leg on a fast Star table in south London.

Tillison defeated first-time finalist Shane Kearns (Swindon) 2-1 from 1-0 down at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon, to claim his second tournament win of the season.

“It was a very close match,” he said. “I was still trying to get used to the Star table. It was annoying at first but I got the hang of the really tight pockets in the end.

“In the first frame, I wanted snookers and the ball just flew past where I wanted it to go.

“I have a new-found respect for (professionals). It’s actually quite hard.”

Tillison, who had marked his return to the game after a year’s break with victory in the first leg in Salisbury, did adapt to the conditions well enough to compile the day’s highest break of 20.

The rankings leader opened up an 18-point gap over leg-two winner Ryan Hughes (Chandler’s Ford), whom he had lost to in the group stages.

In the semi-finals, Hughes was knocked out 2-0 by Kearns while Tillison beat Ben Crump (Gosport) by the same score.

On his 16th Cuestars outing, ten-year-old Connor Shaw (Bournemouth) qualified for the knockout for the first time but went out 2-0 to Crump in the quarter-finals.

The fourth leg of eight is at Greenbaize Snooker Club, Bournemouth, on Sunday, January 10.

BREAKS

Ben Tillison: 20.

BRONZE RESULTS

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP A: 1st, Shane Kearns (Jesters, Swindon); 2nd, Ben Crump (Stoke SC, Gosport); 3rd, Connor Shaw (Greenbaize, Bournemouth); 4th, Riley Ellis (Jesters, Swindon); 5th, Ben Hatch (Southampton).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP B: 1st, Ryan Hughes (Chandler’s Ford SC); 2nd, Ben Tillison (Copnor SC, Portsmouth); 3rd, Jack Ratcliffe (Jesters, Swindon); 4th, Arnie Petty (Salisbury SC); 5th, Dan Foard (Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP C: 1st, Bowen Zhu (Chandler’s Ford SC); 2nd, Chloe White (Copnor SC, Portsmouth); 3rd, Callum White (Copnor SC, Portsmouth); 4th, Rio Smith (Copnor SC, Portsmouth).

QUARTER-FINALS (12 points): Kearns 2 Ratcliffe 1, Hughes 2 Chloe White 1, Tillison 2 Zhu 1, Crump 2 Shaw 0.

SEMI-FINALS (15 points): Kearns 2 Hughes 0, Tillison 2 Crump 0.

FINAL (25/18 points): Tillison 2 Kearns 1.

Budd claims consolation prize

FAREHAM’S James Budd defeated Dan Sykes (Chandler’s Ford) 2-1 in an all-Gold Tour Plate final.

Budd had finished third in his four-man round-robin group that included both finalists while Sykes had finished fourth in his group that included the 2013/14 joint rankings champions Brad Chappell (Poole) and Mark Lloyd (Gosport), the current England Under-16 champion.

The first Cuestars event to be held in Coulsdon attracted a 46-strong field: 16 in Gold, 16 in Silver and 14 in Bronze. Non-qualifiers from each tournament competed in a handicapped Plate knockout.

BREAKS

Ben Hatch: 25.

PLATE RESULTS (ONE-FRAME MATCHES)

PRELIMS: Dan Sykes (Chandler’s Ford SC) beat Ally Pollard (Salisbury SC), Ronnie Blake (Frames, Coulsdon) beat Oliver Sykes (Chandler’s Ford SC).

LAST-16: Nat Kidner (Greenbaize, Bournemouth) beat Riley Ellis (Jesters, Swindon), D Sykes beat Blake, Nathan Farmer (Stoke SC, Gosport) beat Adam Cowdroy (Greenbaize, Bournemouth), Ben Hatch (Southampton) beat Rio Smith (Copnor SC, Portsmouth), James Budd (Fareham SC) beat Connor Benzey (Chandler’s Ford SC), Reece King (Greenbaize, Bournemouth) beat Keegan Reed (Salisbury SC), Callum White (Copnor SC, Portsmouth) beat Matt Gillon (Stoke SC, Gosport), Arnie Petty (Salisbury SC) beat Dan Foard (Frames, Coulsdon).

Pro snooker players vs pro pool players

We've all seen Steve Davis, Mark Williams, Jimmy and Ronnie mix it with the best pool players (and sort of hold their own) in 9-ball, but how would a top pro pool player do against pro snooker players on the tour, given a lot of practice?

I found a clip of Corey Deuel playing pro snooker and it seems he struggled more than Jimmy White taking on Efren Reyes etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXipRG6oaNU

Props to Corey for giving it a go, though. Shame more pro pool player haven't. I read an internet rumour from British pool player Daryl Peach that apparently Efren Reyes beat Jimmy and Ronnie in best-of-3 matches, but I think this was BS.

The only truth I could find in this was Reyes playing a 15-year-old O'Sullivan in an Asian event, and Ronnie giving him a 25-point headstart, with Reyes winning and making a 132-break apparently.

What are your thoughts? I think top pro snooker players will hold their own better playing top pro 8-ball/9-ball players than vice-versa

Liverpool, this Thu-Fri (Dec 17-18), looking for lessons or just practice/play

Hi,

I’ll be in Liverpool for a couple of days this week, travelling from the US. And I would really like to use the opportunity and actually play snooker in England, that would be very cool.

Snooker is not popular in the US, it’s kind of a miracle that we even have a couple places with snooker tables in town (Portland, Oregon) and it's usually a lone 10-foot snooker table, most people having no idea what's it's for.

Anyway, I am trying to find somebody who could help me improve my game, maybe give me a lesson or two. Or just somebody to play a few frames against, that would be good too.

My skill level is not high – usual breaks are 10-15 points, my highest ever – 10 balls, 31 points. And that's on a 10-ft table, mind you. I don’t really have a good control of a cue ball.

If you can teach me something that would help improve my level, I'd be happy to cover food/drinks and snooker table charges.

I’ll be staying in the city center and won’t have a car, so it would have to be a venue that I can easily reach from there.

Thanks!

Oh, and we (I and a friend) also created an app that can be used as a scoreboard during snooker matches, it would be very useful to run it past somebody who plays on a regular basis.

WR - touching ball after the break.

This happened in one of our competitions lately:

Player broke and potted a red but ended up touching a yellow (the actual ball potted is probably academic, though). Because he is already "hitting" the yellow, must he nominate that colour?

My opinion was that he must, but I lost the argument.

Hello There

Hi,
Decided to sign up after spending some time reading the excellent Snooker History threads.
My family hail from Abertwsswg so i was brought up hearing tales of the great amateur teams and challenge matches taking place there and around the valleys during the 50's and 60's.
i took up playing under my grandfathers wing as a 9 year old on a 6x3 Joe Davis table in the kitchen, then joining my local club in Cwmbran at 13 just as the game was exploding during the early 80's.
Played at club level during my early teens but sold my soul to rock and roll by the age of 17. Despite this I remained attracted magnetically to any sort of table that might be in any establishment I have visited, not being able to resist picking up a cue or white ball to run across the baize. I have played sporadically over the decades, once a week socially a decade ago but nothing in the last 7 years until a young man I support asked me to take him for a game. I dug out my cue and looked forward to rattling in a couple. I was bloody awful! But loved it andcant wait to go again and intend to make more regular social outings to the club.
Anyways, loving what I have read of this forum and look forward to chatting to many of you

Free 8 Ball/9 Ball Rules Posters

A few months ago I bought my dad a set of pool balls so he can play 8 ball and 9 ball on his 3/4 snooker table and I'm hoping to make a few quid over Christmas by kicking everyones arse but my knowledge of the rules of pool isn't great and there could be situations that I'm not sure about. Giving him a framed picture of the rules will be a very cunning way of garnering peoples interest and I've seen some nice posters of the rules by googling but these require me to buy them. Are there any that are free to download, print out and frame but still look good?

Hello All, my names is Chris and I absolutely LOVE snooker! Been playing a lot more recently and now wanting to find others that are looking to play on a regular basis. I'm reasonably skilled and after plently of practice I'm able to make breaks of between 20-40 pretty consistently. I'm based in Kingston upon Thames but am able to travel around Surrey/London within reason.

Message me if you'd be interested in having a game sometime soon!
