Aiming

I have heard of ghost ball and BOB.

Good players in advance of my paltry 28 best break:

How do you actually aim?

I tried gb for ages then got results from picking a spot. Sometimes my spot picking is well off.

Now, I look at the ball and walk around it. I find the spot and try to hit it. Problem is we have a spherical thing to hit it with - not a rifle. So now I have tried a hybrid of the 2 methods - visualising the contact points on BOTH balls and their position at impact.

Oddly, some pots, I walk right into them, see a perfect ghost ball and I just knock it in. Had this with a really tricky long blue but I saw the ghost ball so clearly I could even almost pick the part of the pocket I wanted it to hit. Other times, I am left with a fairly simple half ball pink and I miss the pot by 6 inches on the cushion. I don't think I have missed anything up to a half ball blue in years - I see the Bob on these, not ghost ball. Thin cuts my mind uses ghost ball and also it uses the overlap method - picking the spot between the overlap. Sometimes I see a 3:4 pot, just think in terms of 3:4 coverage and it goes in. I get this on long yellows and greens.

Some pots I just see and get down and hit them. Others I have to work out as above. Other pots I can't work out - balls close or angled reds.

I have no idea if this is what others do

Pool Discussion

The pool section on the site has now been closed down and you will notice that when you click in to that section of the forum you will be whisked away from TSF to TPF !!!

If you want to chat about pool then this is the place, would be good if a few people signed up so we can test stuff out.

SO the reasoning behind The Pool Forum, well basically it is part of a new formation of cuesport websites, TSF being one of them, TPF being the second and a third being added shortly which will be the main hub and link to both of the forums.

We will be using TPF as a test bed before major changes are made on TSF so software updates (TPF is currently using vBulletin 5) a new theme for both forums which I am currently designing and the new iOS and Android apps, TPF apps will be launched first then the TSF apps once we have upgraded to vBulletin 5, there will also be a server move somewhere in there too.

Questions, thoughts etc either on this thread or on TPF

In regards to the new owners currently they wish to remain anonymous, bad news for you guys is that you have not got rid of me yet! once the transition is completed I will still be around in a technical capacity helping with any website problems that may popup.

So go register at http://ift.tt/1KQKNGB and over the next few weeks you will get a preview of what will be happening on TSF shortly.

Length or bridge

Should the length of bridge be constant? Not talking about those shots that the cue ball is close to the cushion.

Because I find that if the bridge is too close i wont be cueing straight. But if it is too far, my wrist twist at the end of the stroke.

What should be done?

Hi new to the forum - curious

Hi,

I am new to the forum, just decided to take up the game again after 20 years, I played for 10 years from 1981-91,
playing a lot of the clubs and comps around the south east of England, even getting to play on the pro-am circuit
for a short while, unfortunately never got a chance to make a dent on the Satellite rankings, but hey its only a game. lol

I had a cue made for me by Rodney Hynd, an absolute beauty of a cue, and I loved playing with it, unfortunately hard
times took their toll so had to sell the cue (so wished I hadn't), but I have still got the two B&W Burwats, so that is where
I am at the moment, 2 old cues crying out to be used, me wanting to use them, I have a few guys I can knock a few balls
about with, so thats good for a starter back at the game.

The only issue I have is a case for my cues, finding a good two or three cue, single piece case was not easy, any way I have
found a decent looking case on Woodscues, is there anybody on here with any experience of their cases...?

Thanks for taking the time to read this first post and for any help.

Dave

Can also trade some snooker gear too, for example I have spare JP ultimate leather 3/4 case(black), a Crispian Jones patchwork 1 piece case(blue/black/yellow), a couple JP Special multi splice cues(3/4 &1 piece) etc.
Let me know what you got please.

Has your cue action anything to do with your level ??

Well , I saw a few days ago on the Facebook page of one of the snooker coaches ( No need to mention his name here ) this statement: << for me, a player who is able to pott more balls and running higher breaks and win more frames, is the player with the best cue action >>
Interesting topic imo .
Just wonder what is your opinion about this ?
Do you realy think the cue action has anything to do with player,s level ?
So , if you can run ( Lets say 50 / 60 breaks ) , than you consider you'r cue action better comperd to
sumone with average ( 20 / 30 breaks ) ?
What is your thought about this ?
PS : I did'nt mentioned the coache's name bcuz this thread is not about him ,, it's about his statment
Which could be anyones statment .

Left or Right Hand?

Got a new kid to coach. He used his left hand to draw as a nipper before learning to write with his right hand. He's at an early stage with his game and he picked the cue up with his R hand. But I'm thinking to myself, all the greats play opposite hand to dominant eye; Ronnie, Judd, Robbo, Smurf, etc. This kid is R eye dominant. So is it in his interests to learn to play with his L hand and enjoy the superior stance and alignment these pros enjoy?
Left or Right Hand?

sighting

hi all.
had a conversation recently about eye on which ball when we strike the cue ball with a couple of coaches. Can someone please convince me once and for all that we should looking at the object ball contact point we wish to strike with cue ball ,therefore our eyes will send our cue arm in the direction we are looking. Both coaches i discussed this with seemed to have a difference of opinion.
thanks.

Chinese Cues

Sorry if this has been posted a million times before but, who are the best Cue Makers in China?

Used to play a lot of club league snooker when I was in my teens but lost interest in my twenties, now in my 30's and looking to get back into playing.

My cue is not up to any sort of standard and feels like holding a broom handle, I deal a lot with China through work and was wondering who are the best cue makers over there?

Any info would be gratefully received.

Cheers.

John parris personalised badge

Does anyone know if John Parris will be able to identify the model of a cue from a personalised badge, and how much it would cost to get it rebadged? Is it likely to affect the price much having someone else's name on it so long as it says John Parris?

Cue Filler

Does anybody know what to use to "fill' the grain on a cue. I emailed John Parris Cues after seeing them use this black substance when making cues on the Ronnie O'Sullivan show. Parris Cues replied back with "sorry trade secret". One of my mates, who makes cue, reckons its indian ink! I'm not so sure.

Snooker Research (Relative Shot Difficulty)

I'm doing some academic research on the game of snooker and part of this involves giving a numerical approximation to how difficult a shot is compared to other shots. It'd be really useful if I could get some answers and information from members of this forum as to which of the following factors (and any other factors) impact the difficulty of a shot, ranging from most impacting to least impacting.

The factors we have so far are:

- Distance between cue ball and object ball.
- Distance between object ball and pocket.
- Distance between cushion and cue ball.
- Distance between cushion and object ball.
- Angle of attempted pot (with a higher angle or 'thinner' shot thought to be harder).

To keep things a bit simpler, for the moment we are assuming that all shots are hit without spin (or back/top), and that all shots are played at the same pace. The table also is assumed to be flat!

If each person who replies could rate between 1 (no impact) and 10 (extremely high impact) the factors mentioned above, as well as any others that spring to mind, it would be most appreciated.

Thank you for your time :) .

Identifying Unknown Old Powerglide Cue

Hi, I recently acquired an old Powerglide cue and would like help to identify it. Unfortunately the writing on the name badge has worn off, I would like to get it redone if possible. I believe what the previous owner says that is actually a Powerglide and that he had it years. I obtained it from his nephew who was selling some of his (impressive) collection off.

The cue is hand-spliced ash/ebony, weighs 17.4oz, has a 9.5mm tip and is 58" long.

IMG_20160123_183633.jpgIMG_20160123_183712.jpgIMG_20160126_220055.jpgIMG_20160126_220234.jpgIMG_20160126_220359.jpg

I scoured this forum and the Internet looking for clues but came up with nothing so far. It looks, plays and feels very similar to my Rex Williams Original but there are obvious differences with the badge. Maybe a forerunner?

Thanks in advance.

my new tyrone

not posted any pics of cues lately so thought id post this, tyrone cues sent this cue out for my mate to try so of course i had a play, lol. The shaft made from cherrywood, the splicing in a old butterfly style, the cue arrived workmanship and finish very good, playability rubbish, asked martin if could change tip,it had an elk on and you could not feel the shot ,the shaft and tip just absorbed the hit,put a harder tip on not sure what it was in a pile i got of adr in one of his comps, instantly the cue was a player responsive to all shots i tried hardly any deflection, so few pics.,,,,.

Warnning though, ebay refund their % of final selling price, but not the cost of "buy it now", or "reserve price" fees.

How much space do you need for a pool or snooker table?

My local club is closing and I imagine their tables would be up for sale. It got me thinking, how much space does one realistically need for a regular pool table, or for a full-size snooker table? What's the minimum you could get away with if you were willing to compromise on some shots (we've all played on pub tables without enough space), and what would you need to not ever find the walls get in the way?

Just add a margin of X feet on each side of the table? Would that be the same for all tables, because then it's easy to calculate. Also - is a 6x3 or 12x6 table the size of the table, or the size of the baize?

American heresy

I live in Colorado, and sadly, had only found one 12 foot snooker table to play on. Never less, I have started practicing, and playing by myself. I'm a straight pool (14.1) player, and use an American style pool cue. I have a Helmstetter, 58" long, 19.5oz, Kamui Med tip at 13mm. None of the local stores sell snooker cues, and the few only stores that sell snooker cues, are not of the best quality (at least for what I can see).

As my cue is 58" in length, that makes my current maple shaft 29", and my heretic question that I'm posing to you is... Could I get an Ash shaft made for my current cue butt (maybe 31" in length and 9.5mm tip), and can I play at a good level with it? Or is it better to buy a complete snooker cue?

If the answer is get a whole snooker cue, are the 1/2 joint snooker cues not as good at the 1 piece or 3/4? If the answer is that I can just get a shaft, do you know of anyone that makes Ash shafts for American pool cues? Or can I just get an American cue maker to make one out of maple?

getting through the ball

When I feel I am cueing well, I note how well I'm getting through the ball.

So, this feels to me that all shots are hit hard or firmly. Even low pace shots are played with short bs but still getting through with high velocity or acceleration.

Both the coaches I have seen have tried to slow it down - feathers slower, no snatching etc- they tell me to be really controlled in the shot.

I find now I am not getting through the ball, I'm not accelerating through it and my stroke is timid.

How do you reconcile a controlled strike with proper acceleration? When I've been on fire I note how hard I am going through the ball.

granted slowing my feathers and backing has helped, but we still need to get some power in the stroke right?

I try to think "acceleration at impAct" but this game doesn't really work well with words. On the rare occasion I am in the zone, I have not been thinking about anything, it felt like how it feels when I master a new guitar piece- it's just muscle memory or something.

So, how should I approach ny actual stroke - if we control power with bs length, I can play a 5cm backswing as hard as possible, or I could play it at 0.00000001 mph and prob double kiss!

How much in % terms power is applied ? 80% like golf?

Cheers

pocket question

Hoping to settle an argument here lol

My brother says that the pockets are not named permanently, ill explain ,

when you watch snooker on TV the commentator will say the pocket is top left and as the camera goes from the top of the table the same pocket could be called top right ,

My question is are the pockets named top left top right and never change or do they change just for tv , Hope thats clear :-)
