Russian Billiard Cues

Very different. Really long and slim looking, with strange looking, emphasized grain patterns. Anyone know why?

Snooker it's so frustrating at times!

In my younger days of playing snooker I used to get very frustrated, angry and temperamental. Professionals are no different.

Help appreciated!

Hi all,

I haven't exactly contributed a lot to this coaching forum since I joined late last year, mainly because I don't think I know enough about technique to help anyone. Since joining though, I have (sadly!) probably read the majority of threads in an attempt to learn more about good technique.

I picked snooker up again just before Christmas after a 6 or 7 year break, having played it for 10 years very regularly before stopping. I played in the local league with a highest break of 67. Highest practice break is 87 (twice), so I guess I can pot.

My problem is one I've read many times on this forum, a frustrated player stuck in a rut basically! Not really improving a great deal and most frustratingly just wildly inconsistent. I just want to try and be the best I can be and I feel I'm nowhere near that right now.

I've seen two coaches and they both said I set up ok. The second coach I saw changed my stance to get more hip clearance because he noticed I was cueing around my hip. This also seemed to be affecting my alignment a little, but the general takeaway was that I have the fundamentals down quite well. Trouble is, when I saw both coaches I actually potted quite well so it probably didn't seem like I was struggling too much!

One of the main areas I think I have a problem with is my cue arm shoulder. It's hidden behind the head most of the time but it's not as high up as it could be and I feel like the shoulder is getting involved too early in the shot. Sometimes I get down and it feels more solid and braced, but I can't seem to get in that position consistently, despite trying a few things recommended on here (most from that epic cue arm & shoulder thread).

Anyway long story short, I filmed myself doing a bit of a line up and was very, very surprised how much movement I have. I'm actually surprised I can pot anything. But I wondered if I make the video available to you guys, one or two of you might spare 5 minutes to have a look and see if you can spot anything else that might help?

It would be very gratefully appreciated. I'm losing my marbles with this game!

Many thanks in advance,

Martin

Selling my James Butters unbadged.

http://ift.tt/2afBzK5

Hi, I have my James Butters cue of sale. It is not a badged version.

I bought the cue directly from James himself on 9 May 2016.

I have played quite a few frames with it but I just can't get on with it. Its a bit too long and heavy for me.

This is taken from the listing he put on.

"A hand made cue, ash shaft medium stiff, hand spliced ebony, butt jointed around 12 ins, splicings of purpleheart and ebony with maple veneers.. approx. 58 ins long , weighs approx. 18.4 oz, tip approx. 9.8mm, butt approx. 30mm, has a welshpool socket and joint. natural oil finish.. can end at any time."

I bought a second hand case to keep it in good condition but the case is in poor condition with scrapes. This is free with the purchase of the cue and only to protect the cue itself.

I can post to UK only please. I aim to dispatch within 3 days due to work commitments.

Champion of Champions tickets and seating plan

Sometimes, make that quite often over the years, who ever runs snooker tickets sales seem to go out of their way to make things annoying/difficult.

First, for this event I cannot find a seating plan anywhere. Not on the website not once you get allocated a ticket, nothing.

Picked some for the friday/saturday and got a few different blocks between a-e, once in your basket these details disappear as leave the following :

Champion of Champions Snooker
Fri Nov 11 2016 - 1:00pm
Champion of Champions Snooker
Fri Nov 11 2016 - 7:00pm
Champion of Champions Snooker
Sat Nov 12 2016 - 1:00pm
Champion of Champions Snooker
Sat Nov 12 2016 - 7:00pm

Love all the details there.

Also the main website

http://ift.tt/2aAInW0

is missing an offer that is on this page

http://ift.tt/2aAI5yq

FRIDAY & SATURDAY TICKET
11TH & 12TH NOVEMBER
SEMI FINALS & FINAL
Sixteen champions will compete…
but there can only be ONE Champion of Champions.
ALL DAY
£61

which is a nice price against £82 if bought separately.

Nice of the main site not to show it and make an extra £20 of anyone booking via them.

I only went on to see how much the early bird tickets are before they end on the 31st.

Those are unreserved at least but I think the vip/premium ticket holders get early entry and some prime seats reserved so to say unreserved is a bit misleading as well.

Oh well, maybe just do the english open instead or the UK. But if anyone has a link to a seating plan that would be great as I can't even find an email link on their site!!! rant over.

Hello, and can you identify this cue?

Hi this is my first post, recently started playing again these last few weeks so dug out my cue. Can anyone identify it and offer any information? I'll post some pictures when I figure out how but I'll do my best to describe it, it is two piece ash with "Warwick" printed or written about three inches below the joint, it is mostly plain wood apart from a small bit of pattern on the butt which looks like it's dyed, blue, yellow, red then brown with a shield logo with HSC printed.

I know it's not ideal without pictures but I'll try and do it now. Ta.

Would Judd be outstanding with a more 'normal' cue action?

Judd Trump is one of my favourite players to watch - interesting and pacey around the table with tremendous cue power. He's had many accolades to his name such as winning the under-15's world championships at the age of 10 and being the youngest player to make a 147 in competitive play aged 14.

I couldn't help but wonder if he'd have managed to achieve even more if he had a more orthodox cue action. His current method of lining up to miss and then moving his body across his shot seems to go against everything in the snooker bible but it can't be denied that he is a phenomenal single potter, perhaps the best the game has ever seen.

Do you guys think he's perfected a different approach to cueing or would his consistency improve from a more textbook method?
Would Judd be outstanding with a more 'normal' cue action?

12 important facts about the new Cuestars season

OUR minds may be occupied with summer holidays and lazy days on the beach at the moment but the new Cuestars season is just over six weeks away.

Below are 12 things you need to know about the 2016/17 campaign, from car parking in Coulsdon to increased prize money to where to find a recommended loft converter.

SPONSORS

The list of sponsors is growing by the day. Hover over ‘About Cuestars’ on the home page of cuestars.co.uk and click on ‘Our Sponsors’. It’s quite a list!

There are some useful firms there from loft converters to financial advisers to snooker equipment suppliers. And one advantage of using them is that the owners are all known to Cuestars. In fact, most are players themselves.

As Cuestars director John Hunter said: “Cuestars is like a family of snooker players and snooker enthusiasts. I’m delighted with the support I’ve got.”

Q SCHOOL PLACE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR WINNER

The winner of the 2016/17 Cuestars South of England Championship Tour will receive a free entry into World Snooker’s Q School. There is no cash alternative and the winner must be a member of his or her country’s national governing body, eg, the English Association of Snooker & Billiards (EASB).

INCREASED PRIZE MONEY FOR GOLD TOUR

Thanks to our sponsors, the prize money for the Under-21 Gold Tour will be increased by 50%. And, new for this coming season, the runners-up in the Gold tournaments will receive trophies.

CLUB RANKINGS

Who is contributing the most points to your club’s rankings? A new feature on the website answers that question.

Hover over ‘Rankings’ on the home page, click on ‘Club’ and then click on an individual club to see a breakdown of the points won by each player.

For the new season, Championship Tour points will be doubled so that that circuit carries more weight in the club rankings.

WHAT HAPPENS IF TWO OR MORE PLAYERS TIE FOR THE VARIOUS RANKINGS TITLES?

In 2013/14, John Hunter and Wayne Muddiman tied for the Seniors rankings and Brad Chappell and Mark Lloyd tied for the Gold Tour rankings.

If this happens again, the most tournament wins that season will decide the champion. If they still can’t be separated, it’ll go back to number of runners-up and if necessary to semi-finals, quarter-finals and group positions. In the unlikely event that it’s still a tie, their performances in the last tournament will be used or the previous one, etc.

NEW HIGH BREAK CRITERIA FOR UNDER-21 GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE

Breaks made in friendly or practice matches are disregarded this season. Only breaks made in some kind of organised competition count.

Gold players who have not made a 60 and Silver players who have not made a 40 can apply, if they want, to drop down a level. The application must be done by email to John Hunter before the season starts. Requests on the day of an event will be denied.

SENIORS TOUR (40+) FINALS DAY

Following the seven-leg tour, the top 20 ranked players will be invited to a finals day in Newbury when a guaranteed £500 prize pot will be up for grabs.

PROFILE PAGES ON THE WEBSITE

The Cuestars IT department (ie, John Hunter) is in the process of adding profile pages to the website. These will include titles, pictures, breaks and a few other interesting things.

FUNDING FOR INTERNATIONAL EVENTS

Cuestars is considering paying the entry fees for any player who has been selected by England to compete in an IBSF or EBSA tournament.

LIVE STREAMING OF FINALS

One interesting suggestion is that finals should be streamed live on Facebook. If anyone has experience of this sort of thing, please contact John Hunter.

NEW SEASON TOURNAMENTS AND VENUES

Cuestars has 27 events planned for next season. The Championship Tour consists of eight legs. The Seniors Tour is seven legs plus a finals day. The Under-21 Gold, Silver and Bronze Tours have been extended to ten legs plus the usual finals day.

The calendar cannot be finalised under the EASB’s is published. But we can reveal that Cue T’s in Marchwood is probably returning as a venue and Top Spot in Havant may be used for the first time. Depending on the EASB calendar, the season may kick off with the Under-21s in Woking on September 11.

CAR PARKING IN COULSDON

And finally, some excellent news from Coulsdon. The car park has re-opened and it’s free on Sundays.

Vintage hunt & O'byrne Black Plate Snooker cue

Hi, sorry its my first post on here, but I was a very good Snooker player back in the eighties.

I did in 1985 ish have a hunt & O'byrne Black plate cue made for me. I have had it ever since.

It's a 3 piece Cue, and has never needed a new ferral and is a 58 inch in length. It was at the time, weighted and made for me (think I copied a Pro at the time) but Can't remember the full specs, but i'm sure they would be easy to find the balance and weight.

I have been told these are quite collectible now, is this true, I will never play again properly, so its now wasted on me, as I have not played for at least 25 years and I doubt I could pot a Geranium now !!

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Fake antique cues.

Anyone remember the guy who use to buy plain old cues on ebay and then get Tony Glover to badge them up and he would then put them back on ebay as originals? Remember buying a non pariel cue and then being told a week later of its origins.
it was a while back now and just cant remember the guys name. Bugging the hell out of me.

3/4 or 1 piece?

What are the thoughts on 3/4 cues these days?
Seems like everyone wants a one piece, is this cause cars are bigger maybe or just the trend that Ronnie has started?

Test on gripping of cue

Hi guys. want to request those of you who have problems with overgripping on delivery to try this out.
rubber band grip.JPG
Using a normal sized rubber band (maybe the size of a large ringed condom LOL), loop a figure 8 between your thumb and forefinger.
put your cue butt through, with the figure 8 part of the band locking the cue butt against your palm.
Hold the cue butt as you normally would.
Now the rubber band should hold the cue in place, providing enough grip to keep it from flying out.
Relax your grip and play shots without worry.
Get the hang of not gripping too hard on shots.
After about 3 to 4 games in, remove the rubber band and play.
Does it help you not to grip the cue too tightly?

It worked very well for me. After 4 games in, I removed the rubber band and was able to forget about gripping the cue.
Let me know if this works for you guys! Thanx!

World Open 2016 - Discussion

So, the World Open starts tomorrow...

Unfortunately it is one of the rare proper tournaments on the calendar this season. The people in charge have "successfully" replaced the best-of-9 format in ranking events with their beloved best-of-7s, so most of the season is now short-format crap, with even non-snooker tournaments such as the Shoot-Out counting towards the rankings. The distinction between the former PTC series and the major ranking events has now been erased, which means that players who win best-of-7 events are now considered by most people to have won a proper ranking event, and I think that's a travesty. I have spent more than nine years on this forum protesting against the shortening of events and the dumbing down of snooker, but it looks like that battle is well and truly lost now.

I would like to think most of my posts on this forum, especially the longer ones, have been inspired by my love of snooker and my fascination with the game, so I tried to stay away during the first two "ranking events", because there just wouldn't be any point in me spreading around my negativity and trying to discredit the players' achievements like some sort of lunatic. If I don't like it, I don't have to watch it, and I will try to stick to that policy throughout the season. This tournament, however, is a good old ranking event, with matches of medium length and a world-class field, so it deserves a few words.

Let's have a look through the draw then...

Quarter 1:

Shaun Murphy/Sanderson Lam v. Cao Yupeng
Jimmy Robertson v. Wang Yuchen
Stephen Maguire v. Xiao Guodong
Michael White v. Kurt Maflin

An interesting section to start with. Shaun Murphy is the top seed here, as he was the winner of the previous event called the World Open, held back in 2014. That was the first time Murphy won a major ranking event in China, and so far the only time. He will be looking for a better start to the season than last year, when he went something like 10 months without reaching a major quarter-final, before salvaging something from the season by winning the World Grand Prix. The signs are better for Murphy this time, with a run to the semi-finals of the Indian Open a few weeks ago. His toughest opponents in this section should be Michael White and Stephen Maguire. White has done very little in the build-up to this tournament. Last season was decent for him, but it ended on a very low note, with 1st round exits in the China Open and the World Championship, so he will be looking for better here and perhaps try to establish himself as a strong top16 player. Maguire worked hard to get into the top16 ahead of the World Championship last season, but then lost in the 1st round at the Crucible for the fourth year in a row. He hasn't really been a strong title contender in recent times, but he still reaches the business end of major events from time to time, and it's worth noting that some of his best results have been in tournaments outside of the UK, including the semi-finals of the China Open last season. He was also a quarter-finalist in the recent Indian Open. Of the Chinese players, Xiao Guodong is perhaps the most dangerous. On the verge of the top16 not that long ago, he has now dropped down the rankings quite dramatically after a horrendous last season. He has made a decent start to this season though, with a run to the quarter-finals of the short-format Riga Masters. Cao Yupeng is a familiar name as well, but unfortunately he has had no decent results to mention recently. Kurt Maflin is also worth mentioning, a semi-finalist of the China Open in 2015.

Mark Davis v. Tom Ford
Joe Perry v. Jamie Burnett
Ben Woollaston v. Gary Wilson
Ding Junhui/Michael Georgiou v. Robin Hull

Probably not the strongest section, but it does have a couple of players who could go far in this tournament. Ding Junhui is the biggest name, a player whose major title drought has lasted for more than two years now, since the 2014 China Open. He dropped out of the top16 towards the end of last season, which meant he had to qualify for the Crucible, but he did so very convincingly and of course went on to reach the World final. Qualifying has been his biggest problem in recent times, while his performances at venues have actually been quite strong since the second half of last season. He hasn't played any snooker this season at all, so his form ahead of this week is a bit of a mystery. Joe Perry is his biggest threat in this section, comfortably in the top16 these days, after a series of really strong seasons. Like White though, he ended last season on a low note with two 1st round exits, and he has done nothing so far this season. He has won a few short-format events in recent times, including the PTC Finals which carried huge prize money, but he is still waiting for his first traditional ranking title, having come very close in Wuxi two years ago, losing 10-9 to Robertson in the final. Mark Davis has had success in China in the past as well, particularly in Shanghai and Wuxi, and he will certainly be looking to improve on what was a fairly mediocre last season for him. His record against Perry is quite poor, and both of them have struggled against Ding in the past. But of course there are other dangerous players in this section. Gary Wilson was a finalist in the China Open in 2015, but unfortunately failed to produce anything remotely similar last season. Ben Woollaston is perhaps an even bigger danger, but losing in the qualifying of both minor events at the start of this season is perhaps not the best sign for him...

Quarter 2:

Neil Robertson v. Ian Burns
Luca Brecel v. Thor Chuan Leong
Barry Hawkins v. Robbie Williams
Ryan Day v. Allan Taylor

It's difficult to see any big surprises in this section, it really should be one of the four "seeds" that goes through. Neil Robertson is obviously the man to beat here. Looking back to last season, he was one of its best performers, winning the UK Championship and the Champion of Champions, but it's interesting to note that he didn't win a single match since the Welsh Open in February. It looks like that run of poor form is behind him now, as he started this season strongly by winning the Riga Masters. He actually won all of his matches in Riga very comfortably, which is not easy to do in the short format. He also won the Wuxi Classic twice in recent years when it was the season opener, so he clearly likes playing snooker in the summer. Barry Hawkins is the opposite case, he started the last two seasons very poorly and only found some form towards the end of them. In fact, he has reached the business end of the World Championship for four years in a row now, which is something no one else has done in this period. As for playing in China, Hawkins is one of the best players to have never won a major event in China, although he does have a couple of semi-finals here. If he were to meet Robertson in the last16 here, it would be their first meeting since the quarter-finals of the 2015 World Championship, when Hawkins won 13-12 in an extremely high-quality match. Also here is Luca Brecel, a finalist in the German Masters last season, but unfortunately that run has so far failed to inspire any consistency in him, so he remains an outside bet at best. He also doesn't have a good record in China, having lost in the 1st round in the vast majority of his appearances here. Ryan Day, on the other hand, is an excellent traveller and always a danger in these events. The draw is quite favourable for him here, so I won't be surprised if he reaches the business end.

David Gilbert v. Rod Lawler
Zhou Yuelong v. Hammad Miah/Huang Jiahao
Peter Ebdon v. Zhang Anda/Hu Hao
Judd Trump v. Yu Delu

A slightly weaker section of the draw, where Judd Trump stands out as the big favourite. He has won four of his five major ranking titles outside of the UK, three of them in China, and he has also had success in Australia and Germany in the past, so he is clearly a pretty good traveller. He reached the final of the Shanghai Masters and won the China Open last season, so you could say that he plays his best snooker in China. He has been a fairly consistent presence at the top of the game since his breakthrough in 2011, but so far he hasn't really put together the kind of winning streaks some people were predicting. Can he raise his game this season? A decent start for him in Riga, a run to the quarter-finals, where he lost to the eventual winner Robertson. David Gilbert is probably his biggest obstacle here, a surprising finalist in the International Championship last season. That was Gilbert's first run to the business end of any major event, so it would have been a little optimistic to suddenly expect a series of great results from him. He did get to the last16 of the China Open later in the season though, and perhaps this could be another good week for him. Peter Ebdon is not as dangerous as he once was, but he had a decent run to the quarter-finals in India recently, so his form can't be too bad at the moment. Unfortunately it's a couple of years since his last quarter-final in the major events though. It's interesting, Trump and Ebdon have already played each other in five major matches in China in the past, Trump winning three of them, and there could be a sixth here. For some reason Ebdon always seems to play either Trump or Robertson in China. As for the Chinese players, Zhang Anda and Yu Delu have never reached the quarter-finals of any major event, even though they have been on the tour for a long time now, but this is the kind of section where we could see a surprise or two. Zhou Yuelong is perhaps the most dangerous of the Chinese players, a very promising player who doesn't seem to be struggling in the qualifiers as much as some of his compatriots. This will be his third appearance at a venue this season, and he should be the favourite in his opening match at least.

Quarter 3:

Stuart Bingham v. Stuart Carrington
Allister Carter v. Mike Dunn
Kyren Wilson v. Zhang Yong
Daniel Wells v. James Wattana/Xu Si

Another section where there shouldn't be any surprises. Three players clearly stand out. Stuart Bingham goes into this season without the pressure of being the World champion, although I thought he handled that pressure fairly well last season, even though he failed to win any titles. He reached the last16 of both minor events prior to this week, so it looks like he is in decent form for the start of the season. He was the most successful player of the Asian PTC series in the past, winning four Chinese PTC titles, and of course he added the 2014 Shanghai Masters as well. Ali Carter is himself a former Shanghai Masters champion, but he hasn't travelled to China all that often in recent times and certainly hasn't had any great success. He is seeded to play Bingham in the 2nd round here, having knocked him out of the World Championship in the 1st round last season, in a dramatic 10-9 finish. Carter generally has a good record over Bingham, but there is no doubt that Bingham is the better player at this point in time, so it could be a difficult match for Carter. The other main contender in this section is Kyren Wilson, yet another Shanghai Masters champion, the reigning one in fact. Wilson had a great breakthrough last season, not only winning his first major ranking title, but also adding a run to the semi-finals of the German Masters and ending the season with a very solid performance at the Crucible. It definitely looks like he is here to stay as a top player, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if he won the title this week, especially as he has already shown good form this season by reaching the final of the Indian Open a few weeks ago. As for any potential surprises in this section, they are difficult to call... Perhaps the veteran Mike Dunn, a semi-finalist in the China Open two years ago?

Graeme Dott v. Duane Jones
Mark Williams v. Andrew Higginson
Michael Holt v. Fergal O'Brien
John Higgins v. Oliver Lines

One of the most intriguing sections of the draw. John Higgins is the highest seed, having climbed back up the rankings after his great resurgence in the past 18 months. He played some excellent snooker last season, winning two major titles, including the International Championship in China. Losing to McManus in the quarter-finals of the World Championship must have been disappointing for him, just as it was starting to look like he had a great chance of winning his fifth World title. He just didn't have that final push in him, and that happens to players of Higgins' age quite often. Mark Williams certainly knows all about that, as he has been the king of poor defeats at the wrong time in recent years. He too reached the quarter-finals at the Crucible, a rare good result for him last season, but a run to the semi-finals in Riga last month is a good sign for the season ahead. Williams' record in China is not in question, so he should be a danger here, as long as he doesn't put in one of his frustratingly poor performances again. Graeme Dott is another interesting performer in China, having reached eight major quarter-finals here since his "comeback" in 2010, which is a lot more impressive than his record in the UK events in this period. If you add a couple of good results in the German Masters as well, including a run to the semi-finals last season, it seems that Dott enjoys playing snooker abroad these days. A possible 2nd round meeting with Williams is in store for him here, a repeat of their match at the Crucible a few months ago, a match Williams won comfortably. Michael Holt could also be a major player in this section, having reached the final of the Riga Masters last month, beating a couple of strong players on his way. He lost to Robertson in the end, the opponent he beat in the 1st round at the Crucible last season. Looking past the short-format stuff, Holt's best result in a major event is a semi-final in the 2013 Shanghai Masters, so I'm sure he is another player who doesn't particularly mind travelling to China. His main problem in this section is Higgins though, he lost to him in Daqing last season, and he generally struggles against him. I'm looking forward to the last16 match in this section, could be some old rivals meeting again... I don't think any of the "non-seeds" will spoil the party here, but Oliver Lines is perhaps worth keeeping an eye on, a very promising player who reached the last16 in India, beating Dott on his way.

Quarter 4:

Ricky Walden v. David Grace
Anthony McGill v. Lee Walker
Marco Fu v. Sam Craigie
Matthew Selt v. Matthew Stevens/Liu Yiqi

No really big stars in this section, but it's probably still one of the strongest sections of the draw. Ricky Walden is the highest seed, a winner of three major ranking titles in China in the past. He reached a couple of finals at the end of last season, but before that things were going horribly for him, with a prolonged run of bad form and poor results. Hopefully he can play himself into form a little earlier this season. He is an unpredictable player who could easily go out in the 1st round here, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he won the title either. He is seeded to play Anthony McGill in the last32 here, and that's a really tough draw for him. McGill too had a disappointing last season, but showed some good form at the Crucible, beating Murphy in the opening round. He has started this season much better, with runs to the quarter-finals in Riga and all the way to the title in India, where he beat some strong opponents. As I said earlier, the term "ranking title" has pretty much lost its meaning now, with various short-format and circus events counting towards the rankings, so I won't give McGill any more credit than I give to players who have won PTC events in the past, but it's still a decent title, and perhaps the start of a major breakthrough for him. Marco Fu is always dangerous as well, although last season was slightly less consistent for him than the previous couple. His best results came in the longer events, runs to the quarter-finals of the International and the UK Championship, and of course the run to the semi-finals at the Crucible, where he pushed Selby almost all the way. Matthew Selt also reached two major quarter-finals last season, but unfortunately his beloved Australian Open has been taken off the calendar this season, so he will have to find another event to play his best snooker in. Could it be this one? Also in this section are David Grace, a very surprising semi-finalist in the UK Championship last season, and Matthew Stevens, who unfortunately hasn't done anything of note in the game in over two years. Fu enjoys a good record over most of his opposition in this section, particularly Stevens, whom he beat in their last four matches, and he also had a good win over McGill in a three-session match at the Crucible last season.

Alan McManus v. Jamie Cope
Liang Wenbo/Chris Wakelin v. James Cahill
Thepchaiya Un-Nooh v. Mark King
Mark Selby/Jimmy White v. Alfie Burden

And another interesting section to conclude with... Mark Selby is the big name here, the reigning World champion and world number one. The World title was actually the only major title he won last season, but I'm sure he considers that more than satisfactory, especially since he wasn't among the really big favourites at the Crucible on this occasion. He is not really known as a China specialist, but he has won major titles here before, so he should be one of the men to beat. The only problem could be a slight lack of motivation that inevitably comes after a big success, and we know he had a slow start to the season in 2014 as well, following his first World title. Who could potentially take advantage if Selby is out of sorts? Liang Wenbo for a start, playing some of his best snooker again, at the age of 29 now, and looking like he has finally matured as a player and as a person (although the jury is still out on the latter ). Liang was a finalist in the UK Championship last season, and I'm sure he will be looking to finally win his first major ranking title now. I'm not sure what kind of form he is in though, because he hasn't actually played any snooker this season. Thepchaiya Un-Nooh also had a minor breakthrough last season, his best result coming in the International Championship where he reached the semi-finals, but unfortunately he seems to be a very inconsistent player. What about Alan McManus? I think I said his resurgence was coming to an end a couple of times towards the end of last season, only to be proved wrong in a big way. His run to the semi-finals at the Crucible was superb, and his match against Ding was one of the best semi-finals I can remember at the Crucible. I'm not sure whether he can produce that kind of snooker again though, at least not with any great consistency. It's a tough opening match for him against Jamie Cope here. Normally I wouldn't even bother mentioning Cope anymore, but he beat McManus 4-2 in the qualifiers for Riga recently, and won the other three matches against him in the past as well. And finally, Mark King showed he too can still play a bit when he reached the quarter-finals in Beijing a few months ago.

Possible QF line-up:

Shaun Murphy v. Ding Junhui
Neil Robertson v. Judd Trump
Stuart Bingham v. John Higgins
Ricky Walden v. Mark Selby

There we are, it should be a high-quality line-up at the business end, whatever happens. The only notable players missing are Ronnie O'Sullivan, Mark Allen and Martin Gould, which is pretty impressive, considering one round has already been played. I know the Chinese events don't usually generate much discussion on this forum, mainly due to the time zone, but hopefully a few of us will be watching. I wish a good snooker week to anyone who does.

Slow player problem

Hi All,

I am a studious player who has picked up the game later in life but would still like to achieve my potential even at a competitive level. I have studied the books from cover to cover and I have built up a very orthodox technique, so much so that many player accuse me of being slow. Over the years I have received a lot of negative criticism for this 'slow' style (mainly from the faster players it has to be said) and this seems to be etched into me and now has a very negative psychological impact on the way I play, causing me to rush and missing relatively easy shots as a result.
I'll admit that a lot of players would claim very impressive breaks in practice but struggle in a match, perhaps also due to the psychological stresses. I feel much more comfortable playing a slow/methodical player as I feel as if I don't need to speed up my game, if not for my opponent but for the spectators watching the game and judging me as a time waster.

The truth is that no matter what situation, match play or solo practice, I try to keep the same rhythm of play throughout. I do not believe my time between shots is slow - its more the execution ie slow smooth feathering of the white ball and keeping still, in an almost exaggerated way even after the object ball has been struck - which ruffles and seems to get other players and spectators fidgety.

I know I should just try to block this out from my mind and I have tried to do this on many occasions in matches but only for a relatively short period of the match. I seem to speed up gradually from the moment I start a break and then end of rushing a simple shot missing it. This is something I rarely, if ever, do in solo where I can often go on and score heavily.

I'll be the first to admit that I wouldn't personally enjoy watching myself play and would prefer to watch a more flowing player mop up but if I try to play like this I'll just end up missing and think to myself that I could have taken more care over the shot.

I guess I have two options: To either work on battling these negative thoughts or to try to somehow speed up my game.

I must admit that my highest break in a match was 64 and if I remember I was playing quicker than I usually do. Perhaps this slow/methodical way is stifling any natural talent I may possess.

If you have any light to shed on this I will be very grateful.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Refurb ebony

I appreciate that this question has probably been asked before (and answered) but here goes

The ebony butt on my Robert Osbourne is showing signs of 'wearing' making it not so black. Is there any home grown, quick fix methods of getting it back to black or should I just bite the bullet and take it to Osbourne's in Tooting?

'Hand Made' Cues - Do they have any inherent value?

The huge level of machinery in cue workshops from bespoke cue makers.

If the majority of the work done (and the shaft is very important) on a cue is completed using machines is the cue really 'hand made'?

Cue Craft will happily make me a cue for £124 to my specs. They'll use lathes, jigs, sanding machines, tenon machines for the ferrule; you name it. I won't care; I'll get a machine made cue to my specs, with a bit of hand plane finishing for not many beans. Is it then acceptable for cue makers to charge £300, £500, £1000, £1200 on a cue made the same way to the same specs?

Do you see value if cue 'makers' are using industrial processes. J6 is different, he's manually putting a lot into his cue and making sure they play well. I see value there.

Snooker Laser Scope

Has anyone tried one of these? Would it help? I am not so sure.

http://ift.tt/2a7miwT

How does it work? If the laser goes above the cue ball then how does it tell the player where they are going to hit the object ball given a lot of shots you aim outside the object ball?

I was thinking it could be good to tape a laser to a cue and practice your cueing and try to keep the laser on a target spot on the wall while cueing through a matchbox or similar.

Any other ideas?

Anyway, interesting idea.

Storing Snooker Cues

I have a few cues now and shafts that may or may not turn into something if I ever start cue making!

For you cue makers and collectors who have a reasonable collection, how do you store them to stop them warping?

I know you can hang them or put them in a collectors rack or a circular stand but I was wondering what other methods people use especially shops etc or even manufacturers.

Do they get a square board like I've seen in Thailand shops and drill lots of holes and stand the cues up in them, lean lots of cue blanks against an inclined straight board some other method?

With the weather like it is I would lie to check other peoples thinking just in case there's a better way so I don't ruin any perfectly good cues!

How do you get "good" timing?
If it is "just" practise, what do you have to specifically practise to get good timing?
Is it simple and most out there have over-complicated it or confused the subject with something else?

I have read various posts, websites, etc. (so please no links:wink:) and thought I would ask the forum.

Pro am Tournaments 2016

Hi there all! Just though I would do my bit towards promoting tournaments. There was a Pro am in Stoke last Sunday, which Jamie Cope won, giving 21 start throughout. He managed to win 3-1 against up and coming local lad Jenson Kendrick (who also qualified through the first stages of the English Amateur previously this year). I managed to win the plate final 3-1

There is a Pro am this coming Sunday at Cueball club in Derby! Should be a good turnout as usual. Will post flyers when I have more time.

So please could you all list details of all other pro am dates up and down the country???

Thanks guys and gals!!!

Bosch Electric Planer

I've just had to stop using one as some wood gubbins has squirted into the housing. I'll take it apart, clean it and it'll be fine, a minor issue given how long I've owned it.

The biggest detractor appears to be it's inability to cut through a flat piece of wood even if you set it at max cut (1.6mm in my case) unless you begin at the end of the timber. On top of that, the mech is basically a horizontal router, not a plane at all and this results in gauges rather than a slice along the grain.

It seems a horrible way to treat a piece of JnA (justified and ancient) ash. The noise, that wonderful soundtrack. Grrrr. And twice the weight to work with (compared to a hand plane) as well, so the actual muscle work doesn't seem any less. Does it get the job done faster even? Not sure.

Your experiences guys?

Greeting from the US *Brunswick Gold Crown table help*

Hello everyone, I will be converting a Brunswick Gold Crown snooker table that currently has pool k55 rubber on it, to use the Northern rubber step cushions. I have a good game plan as to how it will all go, I was just wondering if any of you can point me to the direction of some detailed dimensions for snooker rails. How thick are the rails, what height should the rubber be set? Radius of the wood in the pockets? I work on lots of pool tables, but there are not many snooker tables here to work on.

Thanks in advance.

Elbow position

I'm relatively new to snooker, been lifting a cue since I was young though but I started frequently practicing snooker two months ago. I learned how to line up a shot since snooker has such fine margins (opposed to pool and billiards). My footwork and stance is alright now. The real issue is my elbow, have not been able to fix this (bad) habbit in my transition yet.

My elbow tilts away from my body when I'm down on the shot. All players (decent) I've watched in my club, their elbow lines up straight almost perfectly.

As is clearly visible in this picture. The elbow points up nicely, perfectly in line with the cue:

When I watch myself in the mirror my elbow leans right a few degrees. Something like this:

Note that my elbow stays in that position right from the start, I'm not moving it whilst I'm striking the ball.

Question: is this a problem? Could this affect my shot? I assume so since all players do it differently. But maybe this works just fine since it's my natural habit.

In other words, should I work on this (bad) habit. I've tried lifting my elbow straight but it feels really unnatural, seems pretty hard to fix.

Thanks in advance.

Cue Weight and Grip

J6 made an interesting point on his thread and I wondered if preferred cue weight has something to do with grip? As a ring gripper with a light to medium grip with the rear fingers fairly loose, I use a 17oz cue with a 18.5 BP. I've found oddly, that I can generate more cue power with this rascal and its 10mm tip than my other cue at 19oz with a 9.4mm tip. So the acceleration I generate with a lighter cue more than makes up for the loss of weight (in the momentum scheme of things) I guess. I find my timing better with a lighter cue. This is exactly opposite to what some other players have found with heavier cues and I wonder if it's because I have a lighter grip and fast fingers and they have a heavier, tighter, more agricultural grip; the pick it up and hit someone with it grip that Davis advised? I am in no way saying either grip is better per se. But I've noticed other players with lighter cues and lighter grips around as well.

Are you a heavy cue guy with a heaver grip, a lighter cue guy with a lighter grip or something in between? Is there some physics in this boffins?

Summer snooker for juniors at Chandler's Ford SC

SO WHAT exactly are these school holidays competitions at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club and what do they consist of?

They started with the May Half-Term Cup in 2013 and have run on every weekday during every school holiday ever since. That’s six separate competitions every year.

In fact, day 15 of this year’s Rotary Summer Cup will be the 200th day in total that World Snooker coach Tim Dunkley has run.

The fourth Rotary Summer Cup kicks off on Thursday, July 21, and ends on Friday, September 2. That’s 32 days (or 128 hours) of green-baize action!

Separate ranking points are awarded for the morning activity and the afternoon snooker. Fridays are always snooker all day and so double points are awarded.

The player who accumulates the most points each week wins a trophy. The top three at the end of the 32 days win trophies.

Three more trophies are also on offer for the most ranking points won in just the billiards, just the cricket and just the Cuestars Coaching Programme (five-point bonus for each level passed). There is also a small daily prize of a bar of chocolate or a drink.

FIXED WEEKLY TIMETABLE

Monday: Cuestars Coaching Programme (one hour), extended snooker session
Tuesday: Billiards, snooker
Wednesday: Surprise activity, snooker
Thursday: Cricket, snooker
Friday: Snooker all day

The hours are 11am-3pm and the cost is £6 a day. All activities are handicapped. Players must be aged under-18. Non-members welcome at no extra cost. Complete beginners catered for.

There is no dress code, no need to pre-register and no requirement to turn up every day. Just arrive before 11am on any day that you fancy escaping from that nasty hot sun.

As well as the specified activities, etiquette and the rules are also covered. And a few extra challenges will be thrown in along the way.

Previous winners were Steven Hughes (2013), Bowen Zhu (2014) and Ryan Hughes (2015).

Parris cues visit

Just went to take a look at the cues on the rack and started chatting to a guy having his cue re-tipped, He was saying, his mate had ordered a Ronnie Replica Ultimate, and it has taken 5 years so far. Ironically about 20 mins later his mate turned up, as he had received an email to say it was ready.
Now I know its a bit of money to purchase an Ultimate and Don't want to do down the reputation of a good cue maker, but really, 5 years.

But talking to the guy manning the shop he did say they had been pushed further and further behind, making cues for China. As well as re-tipping and refinishing cues for people, which I would expect to be part of their service, to be honest, and in their defence, he did say that they are finding it hard to get people to replace people who leave..... this I understand. It is just a shame its got this far....

All in all a good visit though and I tried a couple of cues out from their Unique range, one off cues that are just for the shop...... I just might invest at some point...

Another salvage job!

So, it appears that I'm a sucker for salvage jobs, or old tables that are beyond help.
However, when browsing a facebook freebie site I came across one that I couldn't refuse. So, popped along to pick it up.
It's a bit of a state...

It's been outside for a while apparently. Everything is perished, however the slate looks to be utterly immaculate. The first thing that struck me, my friend and both of our backs when collecting though was the sheer weight of it. My god, neither of us are small or weak but this thing took ALL of our strength just to load it into the back of my estate. The first table I acquired for cheap was weighty, however this thing was literally twice the weight, if not more. The slate looks to be 1/2", the same as my other table however the bulk would appear to be the rails. Those things are meaty and certainly a lot larger, also allowing for the full size rubbers to be used. Which is handy, as I have a set of those! :D

Anyway, one of the main things that drew me to this was this:

Not related to Burroughs and Watts (as far as I know), Watts & Son is a local company that's been going for well over a century and known for their high quality furniture. Even now, the outside of their store looks like you would imagine the outside of "Are you being Served?" looks.

It's all good, solid wood of unknown type. The only exception is where the cloth would staple to it, and where the cushioned attach to the meaty rails. Looks like some sort of thick fiberboard. It's wet and horrid. If I have any chance of making this playable, it'll all need replacing.

Surprisingly, the structure of the table appears OK. This will be a long term project for sure, and it's likely I'll spend good time on each rail getting them sanded down, properly prepared, stained and finished.
The fiberboard stuff under the slate where the cloth staples too will also need to go, I'm not sure how to handle that. I may go see what wood is available maybe from a reclamation yard.

The slate is in absolutely wonderful condition, another surprise however that may be down to weathering. There's absolutely no chips or cracks in it, it's straight as a die and doesn't appear to show wear around the pockets.

The pocket brasses are in good nick, and the runners aren't bad either. Those will all be salvageable. The nets will need replacing. The leathers though are also in good nick.

Despite being outside the rubbers have good bounce, but obviously I'll change those out.
The legs are lovely and sturdy.

I've emailed the store to see if they happen to have any records of these tables. I didn't know they made any snooker tables so it's possible it's a rebadge or similar. There's no other markings on it at all. Still, I'd be interested to see if they have any information on it, the history of these things really interests me.

Best case scenario is that I manage to completely salvage this quarter-sized beast. Worst case is that I can't, and I lose nothing. A good compromise though may be to swap out the slate with my table which is ropey to say the least. Possibly also the rails, these give such a reassuring sturdiness that I don't get from my Riley tabletop antique where you can feel the rails vibrate.

So, again I'll keep up some pics on here with progress :) My full hopes and intentions are as follows:

Rub down, prepare & finish the solid woodwork.
Replace the "soft" woodwork with something appropriate
Replace the rubbers and cloth (green this time!)
Replace any hardware - all the screws certainly. They all attach to the soft fibery wood stuff too, so I'll find something more substantial. Probably coachbolts to also give it a better finish.
Replace the nets
Optional: The time I've spent perusing GCL Billiard's website has given me a lot of inspiration. As I have a good frame & legs, I'd like to fit a crossmember and also adjustable muntins, rather than having adjustment on the bottom of the legs.

First glances, this is easily a lost cause. If I can make it play and look nice though, I'll be more than happy, and hopefully learn from the mistakes made on my first table as well as the great advice from here :)

Strange Cue Phenomenon

I have just received a new cue and like I always do I take it down to my snooker club and try it out. I always hold my cues with the badge in the 'up' position but sometimes when the cue doesn't 'feel' right I then try holding the cue with the badge facing out or down or in.

Today, my new cue is a very old maple cue with a lovely old golden colour and no visible marks on the maple. I began by holding the cue with the badge facing up and the cue played really nice and felt good but I always experiment and so tried holding the cue in the main four different positions. When I held the cue with the badge facing 'in' then the feel and hit felt perfect. I couldn't believe what a difference in the feel of the cue between my normal 'badge up' and the 'badge in' position and then spent the next hour doing line ups and potting long blues and couldn't believe what a difference there was.

I have tried this before with ash cues and have found similar differences of the 'feel' of the cue depending where you hold it so just wondered if anyone else has found the same or do you just persevere with holding the cue in the same position all the time?

I suppose it could depend on the tip and what part of the tip hits the cue ball!!

Oldgit :)
