The floating leg......

Anyone seen this Nick Barrow footage?

Claims a few pros are using this method and even states that he probably should not be sharing it!

I have not got around to trying it yet but interesting none the less.

From Nick himself....

Quote:

A number of pro's are using a new method at the world championships this year.
Could this be snooker's equivalent of the Fosbury Flop in high jumping, and the 'V' technique in ski jumping?
Thoughts?

Shaping a tip?

Hi, I have sort of shaped my tip, I think its ok but how do you do yours?

The tips I used to use were already domed so I never really had to do much to it.

I have just fitted a talisman M and shaped it to the ferrule.

BCE Westbury name plate image

Hi all, just joined up. I've just bought a BCE Westbury steel block table without the name plates at either end. In the olden days these just had the letters B.C.E in black on a brass plate/sticker. I cannot find any of these so I will have to make my own. Does anyone out there have a BCE table with this type of name plate? I would really appreciate it if any of you guys can help me out with a good quality photo of the name plate so I can get the font right and make a pair for my table. I don't need the Westbury plate image, just the BCE version if possible. If you YouTube Alex Higgins 1982 table, you will see it at the end of that table.

Many thanks in advance

I notice a lot of countries have a head coach , does England have one ? Also who is the best snooker coach in England (and why ) ?
Also are all coaches only in it for the money ? As wondered whether if a coach saw a talent in a person would they be prepared to take them under there wing as a project to get that person to the top , with out milking as much money as possible ?? If I were a coach id get alot more satisfaction in helping a pupil get far in snooker and watch them process ... Thoughts ?

Pot Black 6ft Snooker Table - approx vintage?

Hello all

I’ve recently acquired an old slate bed ‘pot black’ snooker table which I’m in the process of refurbing – has been a busy few weeks tearing down and re-building the thing and I now fully appreciate just how heavy the slate beds are! I think the table is pretty old based upon the pictures of Steve Davis on the paperwork I got with it but I’m wondering if anybody can give me a good estimate of its age?

As you can see, it’s basically a H frame and 6 leg affair with top-rails, and basic net-bag pockets. The slate bed has a wooden perimeter bonded underneath which locates directly to the fame and has locating lugs for the cushion supports.

After all the efforts of the previous weeks sorting the table out I’m not looking to sell it on, just trying to get an idea of the vintage, to the nearest decade!

Any feedback appreciated

Thanks in advance.

David

Practice vs Playing

I suck at snooker, I play for several years but never did it regularly (once a month/week).
My highest break is probably around 20 on a small table.
I decided to take it more seriously as I feel frustrated playing the same level for such a long time.
The thing is, I tried practicing only 2-3 times, rest of the time I was just playing against friends.
My question is, is solely practicing instead of just playing can make the difference for me? Or what matters is simply table time?

Any Good Two Player Playstation (PS1) Games

I have a few mates coming over on Friday for an evening of alcohol, red meat and boxing. There will also be a pool table and foosball table and I'm wondering if I should buy a cheap PS1 for a laugh. I've already got a monitor and I could pick up a PS1 from a second hand shop with controllers and cables for £10-£20. The games are less than a quid these days so it will cost me about 20-25 max to do it. When I had a PS1 I was more in to single player so I don't know what classics are out there for two players and this will only work if I get some of the best games for the platform. I had Tekken 2 so am going to look for that as the combat game but what titles are good for football, racing, boxing etc on the PS1?

Talmondt close to Seniors title

MIKE Talmondt is close to retaining his Cuestars South of England Seniors Tour title after bouncing back from his worst ever performance on the 40-plus circuit.

The ex-professional from Portsmouth claimed his third tournament win of the season in the sixth leg at Woking Snooker Centre to replace Matt Ford at the top of the rankings.

“I’m happy to get a win,” said Talmondt, who defeated Southampton’s Ram Birring 2-1 in the final.

“I had a bad last two tournaments. I didn’t even get out of the group in Chandler’s Ford!”

The 43-year-old broke the back of the first frame with a 48 break and went on a run of 28 in the next from a fluked red that missed a black corner pocket, careered back down the table, cannoned the brown on its spot and disappeared into the yellow pocket.

But as the rain from Storm Katie pounded the roof of the one-storey building, Birring, also 43, squared the match with a well-crafted green to black clearance that was acknowledged by his opponent.

Both missed pots in the decider - which was heading towards a tense, scrappy ending - until Talmondt cleared the table for 69, the highest break of the day.

“We both had chances and both missed silly balls,” he said. “But it was a good game. I was happy to clear up in the last frame.”

Following his wins in Fareham and Salisbury, Talmondt lost in the quarter-finals in Swindon and - for the first time ever in his 11 Seniors Tour outings - failed to qualify from his group in Chandler’s Ford

Ford (Bracknell) or John Hunter (Andover) will need to win the final leg in Newbury next month and hope that Talmondt fails to enter or finishes no higher than fifth in his round-robin group.

Earlier, Talmondt, who was beaten 2-1 in the group stages by Martin Wallace, and former champion Hunter compiled a 64 break apiece to share the first two frames of their semi-final.

“It was a slow start as normal but it got better as the day went on,” said Talmondt. “I played well against John.”

For the first time in 11 months, Wallace (Reading) reached the last-four where he took Birring to a third-frame decider.

David Stewart (Odiham) survived a three-way play-off (one frame, aggregate points) to progress to the knockout for the first time since his debut on home tables at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club in October, 2012. But he was knocked out 2-0 by clubmate Birring.

The Crucible Sports & Social Club, Newbury, hosts the seventh and final leg on Sunday, April 24.

Anyone ever had a fake Talisman tip?

I put a fair few tips on for people and stuck one on for a mate the other day and he he restocked me with one when he caught up with me.

The Talisman's I normally buy (usually from ADR147) are great tips, domed and tall enough to take down to your preferred height.......no probs.

The one I was restocked with (by the way not from ADR147) looked the same bu was shorter and was square at the top so did'nt have a dome, it still said Talisman soft on the bottom.

Just wondered if this was a problem anyone else had or if there were other Talismans out there I hadn't come across?

Practice Routine

Folks,

I've been practicing snooker properly for the first time for about a month and a half now. I have started to book the 5 hour slots at a club to save some cash, and I wanted to ask what you think of my routines and am I wasting too much time on one thing or another.

I've started spending a fair bit of time just trying to cue straight along the spots, and putting reds on either side to make it harder. Part of me thinks I should spend at least an hour or so doing this each 5 hr session?

The rest of my time is spent trying to find the right potting angle on different types of shot, pretty random really. I do like to finish with some long potting, and if I get one have a go at making a break.

My instincts tell me to practice straight cuing first and lots of it, but maybe I'm wrong?

Be nice to hear how some of you might break down a 5 hr practice session :)

My dad and his usual tip argument!

My dad is getting on a bit now. But in all honesty pulls the shots out. Don't know how he does it. He plays with a riley tombstone cue. With a bob akers joint. His argument is the old blue diamond tips are softer than the new ones. He also says the elks are harder than what they used to be. I've hunted high and low for old tips but can't seem to find any. Thoughts from the older members who have used the older tips would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi! Newbie here...

I joined because I recently subscribed to digital TV in Thailand and it is full of snooker tournaments! Unfortunately live coverage means staying up till the early hours (5 am?) to watch it.

Greetings,

This is my first post so be gentle with me.
Have seen an O'min cue on eBay that looks really respect to me, price, quality of photo's, only shows butt etc.
Any of you good wise people here have any advice on fake spotting, I only recognise O'min as origional if made in Thailand, Chinese copies for me are fake (even if they have a patent, licence, or whatever is going on at the moment).

I see that the cue has sold but still would like to know your thoughts.

I have recently started back at snooker although I'm not very good, break of 20 ish.

Types of snooker (the verb not the noun)

Hello everyone,

I have a question about the different types of snookers that exist – and one in particular. I'm not certain if they all have names but I've tried really hard to Google an answer to this but I think the problem is the noun vs verb issue.

Anyway, to make my question easier I have created a very crude image of what I mean in the one particular example. In this example imagine that you approach the table and are on the final red, what I've tried to show is that the cue ball has been left in such a position that you can't actually hit the red ball directly. What is this snooker called?

Myself and my friends have always (seemingly wrongly) referred to this as a 'Chinese snooker', however after some googling (and sifting through endless photos of Ding Junhui) I understand this to be a Chinese snooker (where your bridge arm has to be higher up to get over a ball very close to it):

So my question is; what is the first one called?

Are there other types of snookers that have names?

Snooker table cloths which one

Hi All,
This may have been asked but I can not find anything that has helped me so far.

I am looking at getting a table re-clothed including cushions.
I was going to go for what I have had in the past at other clubs I have been involved with, a Strachan tournament 6811 gold(may have changed names now) a fast(ish) cloth and still good life as not a busy club.
I was wanting a fairly fast cloth as this would help the better players as mainly team members play on table.
I have been getting some opposition from players who have been at the club longer than myself who are wanting a Hainsworth cloth.
As I have never had one of this make before or not played on one ( as far as i'm aware) I am a bit unsure what I would find the differences are?
Could any of you fine members give me as many views or stats about both makes pro's and con's would be good.

I have seen that there are now a few more Strachan cloths than there used to be also three Hainsworth where I thought there where two?
I can and have read up on the cloths but views from people who have played on them, fitted them and looked after them is invaluable against a few notes on a web site.

Score Card Application

Hi All,

I started playing snooker with my (adult)son a little over a year ago, we are both quite competitive so we decided early on to track our scores and progress. I write software for a living so as a side hobby I developed a web application to track players, scores, statistics etc.

Even though the app was primarily designed for myself and my son to use it is in fact accessible to anyone.

If you think you may find this useful please do check it out at www.snookerspace.com

There are no ads, spyware etc. I didn't write the site to make money, its purely to supply proof of my outstanding playing ability when beating my son :)

Have fun,
Dave.

Ford wins 55-minute snookerfest

MATT Ford fought back from 2-0 down and twice needing a snooker to win an enthralling fifth leg of the Cuestars South of England Championship Tour.

The 40-year-old from Bracknell was facing one of the heaviest defeats of his career against Christian Chislett in the final at Greenbaize Snooker Club, Bournemouth.

However, Ford turned the tables on his opponent from Basingstoke and wrapped up 55 minutes of pure entertainment with the day’s highest break.

“It was an interesting game,” laughed the rankings leader, following his 3-2 victory.

Chislett, aided by a 69 break, had restricted Ford to a meagre total of 12 points across the first two frames.

But the 29-year-old let the Berkshire cueman off the hook in the third. Ford twice needed a snooker to pull one back and then forced a fifth frame with a run of 58.

One thing best avoiding is leaving Ford in amongst 11 scattered reds in a deciding frame. By the time he departed the table, only the black remained.

The break of 90 surpassed the 85 scored by Chislett in his 3-0 semi-final victory over Neil Clayton (Woking).

“It was a good final,” said Ford. “Christian was awesome. He was potting everything. It was clinical.

“When I needed snookers, I found a gear and that was it.”

The defending champion, who also competes on the EASB Masters Tour, revealed he had reluctantly declined an invitation to represent England in the masters (40+) events at the European Championships in June.

Ford, who is married with two children – a boy, eight, and a girl, four – and works as a sports trader for Ladbrokes, explained that a ten-day trip to Lithuania was “not possible”.

“I’m honoured and proud to be selected,” he added. “But I won’t be going.”

Meanwhile, a 13-year-old from the home club received widespread praise for a remarkable performance on his first Championship Tour outing.

Bradley Cowdroy dropped just one frame in four group-stage matches, finishing with a personal best competitive break of 69 against David Rice (Fordingbridge), to set up a quarter-final tie against Neil Herd (Frome).

Herd, who five weeks previously had broken his collarbone in three places while snowboarding in Austria, missed a straightforward black off its spot for a 3-0 victory – and lost 3-2.

Cowdroy then led Ford 2-1 and by a couple of points on the colours in the decider before losing on the blue.

“What a future that kid’s got,” declared Ford. “He’s got all the shots. I was very impressed with him.”

Three other young guns also made their debuts. David O’Callaghan took a frame off Ford and three-time champion Jon Charlton - and beat circuit stalwart Peter Chin. Adam Cowdroy, Bradley’s younger brother, beat 21-year-old David Rice. And English Under-14 Championship finalist Jamie Wilson was one frame short of qualifying for the knockout.

A total of 20 breaks of 50 or more were recorded by the 15-strong field.

The sixth and final leg is at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club on Sunday, April 17.

BREAKS

Matt Ford: 90, 72, 69, 60, 58, 57, 57.
Christian Chislett: 85, 72, 69, 60, 59, 56.
Paul Bunyard: 83, 66.
Neil Clayton: 81.
Bradley Cowdroy: 69.
Jon Charlton: 67, 57.
Neil Herd: 54.

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP POSITIONS

GROUP A: 1st, Matt Ford (Sunninghill Comrades Club); 2nd, Jon Charlton (Aldingbourne Social Club, Chichester); 3rd, Jamie Wilson (Chandler’s Ford SC); 4th, David O’Callaghan (Greenbaize, Bournemouth); 5th, Peter Chin (Jesters, Swindon).

GROUP B: 1st, Bradley Cowdroy (Greenbaize, Bournemouth); 2nd, Christian Chislett (Selsey RBL, Chichester); 3rd, Anthony Rice (Salisbury SC); 4th, Adam Cowdroy (Greenbaize, Bournemouth); 5th, David Rice (Salisbury SC).

GROUP C: 1st, Paul Bunyard (Woking SC); 2nd, Neil Clayton (Woking SC); 3rd, Neil Herd (Player’s, Westbury); 4th, Johnathan Reeves (Greenbaize, Bournemouth); 5th, Steve Wilson (Top Spot SC, Havant).

KNOCKOUT RESULTS

QUARTER-FINALS (12 points): Ford 3 A Rice 0, B Cowdroy 3 Herd 2, Chislett 3 Bunyard 2, Clayton 3 Charlton 2.

SEMI-FINALS (£15, 15 points): Ford 3 B Cowdroy 2, Chislett 3 Clayton 0.

Ebony - Anyone else bored of it or is it just me?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some opinions and conducting some market research at the same time.

Now that I'm back building cues I'm going through my stock of AAA jet black Ebony and while this is what the industry covets I personally find it quite boring. I much prefer a nice piece of figured Rosewood or African Blackwood myself. I think if you're going to have a custom cue made then it'd make sense to have as unique of a cue as possible. All this black ebony just looks a little fake to me now that there are even cheap cues using it (and bodging over the cracks).

so...

Q: Do you all still want to see jet black ebony in your cues or would you prefer to see more figured yet still very dark woods?

All opinions count!

Champion of Champions Tournament

It was not difficult to see the pockets on the table were close to template however the undercut on the cushions was generous. There were understandably many jaws on some very easy shots.

Congratulations to Neil for winning this marathon. Immaculately dressed, shiny shoes and clean shaven as one would expect from a champion.

Down-under we do not get to see many snooker matches as Fox believes Aussie’s are not interested in snooker.

As previously said we do not get to see many tournaments, that said, I would like to say Mark played the best snooker I have seen him play and it the first time I have seen him clean shaven. Bit unlucky in a couple of frames as the balls were running against him.

I.M.O. to walk into a match as Maguire did is unforgivable, he looked like a terrorist, of course that is only my opinion. I may be a little old fashioned but I would not leave the house unshaven let alone appear on T.V.

free ball

If there were just the colours on the table and the yellow was behind the black and say the pink was on the green spot after a foul the cue ball ends up behind the pink so a free ball if you now take pink as a free an roll it towards the black and leave the cue ball resting on the brown so all the balls are now in a straight line is this a foul? As it's the brown that's the nearest snookering ball even if the pink is in front of black and yellow

Removing a Cue Joint

Might be getting a John Parris cue where the centre joint isn't fixed in correctly and needs removing and re-glued or replaced.

Anyone got any idea how to remove one and what glue to use to refit?

Would rather do it myself as it needs doing up.

New Aussie.

G'day everyone, I reside in Queensland Australia. I've been mucking around pubs playing pool since the mid 70's with the odd game of snooker thrown in, nothing serious.
I have a few trophies to my name, only of sentimental value.
I gave all my cue's away a few years back [10] to the retirement village fella's, as they where playing with broken tree branches, literally more tape than wood & tipless.

I've recently picked up a 2nd hand, half decent cue IMO and joined an 8 ball team [the wife insisted, she is a member & I educated her] after my first round of 4 frames a few fella's asked if I was interested in the snooker team. :)
I've been doing a lot of reading and getting an education from the forum members on the finer points of the game already.

Regards Brian

My development...

This thread may be of little interest to most. But I'm quite impressed with myself tonight so I though I had to share it with someone.

I very rarely play snooker maybe 2 hours every couple of months. However I play pool to a decent level.

I'm very tired of practising pool so I though I would invest in a Andy Travis snooker cue oo similar specs to my pool cue and only practise snooker from now on.

Previously my highest break was 47 when I was 15, 10 years ago. Since then not sure I have ever made a 30?

Anyway, tried the new cue out this evening and I'm not sure what came over me. I quickly made a break of a 60! It's not much, but I'm chuffed. Not only this, but I was aligning straight the white and blue (about 4ft apart) and easily drilling the blue in the corner with the white following in.

I think after a month of playing twice a week, there couple be some good development in me. So I wanted to make a thread just for keeping tabs on myself.

However my biggest trouble is potting the black off its spot!!! Just seem to catch the near knuckle quite often.

Also on a pool table I struggle when there is distance between balls. Just don't seem to have a good eye for distance. But on a snooker table I'm absolutely fine?

Black Kamui 'Soft' Tips

I have been experimenting with various tips for playing snooker for a long time. I liked the Black Kamui tip in the 'Medium' hardness but it is probably just a little too hard for me, especially as the cue that I use is pretty stiff.

I recently talked to Chris Melling and he told me that he uses the Black Kamui 'Soft' tip for playing snooker.

In the UK this tip is available BUT only in the 14mm size even though Kamui also produce it in the 12.5mm size.

Before I go to all the trouble of paying a rather ridiculous £15+ and then spending ages trimming down a huge 14mm tip to 9.5mm I just wondered if anyone else on the Snooker Forum has used a Black Kamui 'Soft' tip for snooker and if so what their opinion was?

Thanks in advance
Oldgit :)

Tip size and old eyes

Hi guys. Hope you're all well. Was just wondering if you had any suggestions or thoughts.....

I've always used a 9mm to 9.3mm tip. However my eyes are not as good as they used to be. I've been using a bigger tip which seems to be helping. But not sure if this is all in my head. Has anyone else experienced this? Or should I just accept the older I get the worse I get. Haha

bobby foster cue maker ?

Hey guys just wondering,if anyone has heard of a cue maker called bobby foster ?
bobby foster cue maker ?

why my games worse?

been playing for 6 years, used to play really good until i saw two coaches
had highest break of 60
last year i saw a coach which changed my natural aiming , i used to play naturaly
when i was down on the shot, i used to look at cueball then obj ball then pocket, while featuring and at the time of strike i cant even remember wat i was looking, but the coach said just look at cue ball and obj bal and never ever look at pocket. lock ur eyes on obj ball and strike
i told him i cant play without lookin the pocket but he said hendry is the only one does that
after that i started changing the aiming and now after amlost 1 year , i miss most of the ball inches away from pocket
i miss easy shots
even a beginner can beat me
i know its my aiming
bcaz as soon as i hit the cue bal hits somewhere else on object ball
my lineup is perfect, grip is perfect
so stance
my cueing isnt perfect but stil soneone with bad cueing wont miss easy balls
its not about east balls
i misse ball way off pocket
it just feels that i cant aim
any suggestio
why my games worse?

What do you stick your tip on with?

Just a thought as to what the most popular method is.

I do lots of tips for people and always use super glue (not gel) and never have any problems.

I haven't had any tips come off and I don't put so much on that is soaks all the way up into the middle layers.

I like it because you can play almost immediately, no waiting overnight for confidence.

I'd be interested in what other people use and how long they wait etc.........

Brothers win two Cuestars events

Dan’s four-year wait over

AFTER four years pounding the Cuestars circuit, Dan Sykes has finally got his hands on a winner’s trophy.

And the 17-year-old from Chandler’s Ford recorded one of the best results of his life in the semi-finals.

The teenager, whose ten-year-old brother Oliver had earlier won the Silver event, made it a family double by clinching the sixth leg of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour at Fareham Snooker Club.

Sykes took the first frame of the final against Jonny Mutch on the black and the second on the blue after his 16-year-old opponent from Cambridge had extracted the penalty points from the required snooker.

“I knew it was going to come, it was just a case of when,” said Sykes, who had never been past the Gold quarter-finals before.

It was a sweet 2-1 semi-final victory over England Under-16 champion Mark Lloyd from 1-0 down on one of the club’s two Star tables that hinted it could possibly be Sykes’ day.

“That was a good draw,” he admitted. “I wanted to play against him because I’ve been so close to beating him (previously).

“To get past that hurdle feels pretty good, to be fair, especially after that first frame.”

Indeed. Gosport-based Lloyd showed his experience on the EASB Premier Junior Tour and on England duty by taking the opener despite needing two snookers on the pink. It was a hammer blow to his opponent.

“It did frustrate me a little bit but that gave me the motivation to win the next two,” said Sykes.

Reflecting on the professional standard tables, he added: “I really like it. It suits my game because it stops me hitting the ball hard. When I hit it hard, I miss. When I hit it softly and stroke it, it goes in.”

Brad Chappell (Poole) lost 2-1 to first-time finalist Mutch in the last-four but maintained his six-point lead over Lloyd at the top of the rankings.

No breaks of 40 or more were recorded by the 14 players.

The seventh leg of eight is at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon, on Sunday, April 10.

GOLD RESULTS

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP A: 1st, Brad Chappell (Greenbaize, Bournemouth); 2nd, Dan Sykes (Chandler’s Ford SC); 3rd, Mike Trigg (Chandler’s Ford SC); 4th, Anthony Rice (Salisbury SC); 5th, Arron Smith (Selsey RBL).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP B: 1st, Jonny Mutch (Cambridge SC); 2nd, Bradley Cowdroy (Greenbaize, Bournemouth); 3rd, James Budd (Fareham SC); 4th, Callum Browne (Player’s, Westbury); 5th, Mickey Joyce (Chandler’s Ford SC).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP C: 1st, Mark Lloyd (Stoke SC, Gosport); 2nd, Reece King (Greenbaize, Bournemouth); 3rd, Callum McDonald (Salisbury SC); 4th, Jamie Wilson (Chandler’s Ford SC).

QUARTER-FINALS (12 points): Chappell 2 Budd 0, Mutch 2 Trigg 0, Lloyd 2 Cowdroy 1, Sykes 2 King 0.

SEMI-FINALS (15 points): Mutch 2 Chappell 1, Sykes 2 Lloyd 1.

FINAL (£45/£25 25/18 points): Sykes 2 Mutch 0.

Thanks, bro

WORDS of advice from his older brother helped Oliver Sykes win his first tournament on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour.

The ten-year-old from Chandler’s Ford climbed to within one point of top spot after accounting for David Rice, 21, 2-0 in the final at Fareham Snooker Club.

Sykes took the first frame on the black and accepted his opponent’s concession in the second with one red left on the table and just enough points available to win.

He did most of the damage with a 28 break that included an outrageous pink from its spot into the yellow pocked followed by a plant.

“I’m pretty happy,” said the young star, who had lost 2-0 to Rice in the group stages.

But he admitted: “I wanted to carry on because I was playing really well and I wanted to pot some more balls,”

Sykes - who had beaten two of his Chandler’s Ford clubmates in the earlier rounds, Connor Benzey (Eastleigh) 2-1 and Olly Gibbs (Gosport) 2-0 - revealed that his 17-year-old sibling Dan, who made it a family double by winning the Gold final, had dispensed some words of wisdom before the trip along the M27.

“I said today I want to try to get my highest break (which currently stands at 52),” he explained. “But Daniel said ‘I wouldn’t worry about getting your highest break, I’d worry about trying to win’.”

Rice (Fordingbridge), who turns out for Super League leaders Churchills A, had beaten Charlie Pringle (Chandler’s Ford) 2-1 from 1-0 down in the last-four.

Bristol’s Aidan Murphy, 11, compiled his highest competitive break of 55 in a 2-1 defeat by Benzey in his final group-stage match. It proved to be the highest break of the day across all three categories.

Just six points separate the top six which sets up an interesting last two events.

Rankings leader Steven Hughes (Chandler’s Ford) crashed out in the group stages but remains top – by one point from Sykes and Murphy. Benzey and Rice are three points further back and two ahead of Gibbs.

The seventh leg of eight is at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon, on Sunday, April 10.

BREAKS

Aidan Murphy: 55.
Olly Gibbs: 41.
James Beaven: 36, 35.
Steven Hughes: 36.
David Rice: 30.

SILVER RESULTS

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP A: 1st, Olly Gibbs (Chandler’s Ford SC); 2nd, Charlie Pringle (Chandler’s Ford SC); 3rd, Harry Jones (Frames, Coulsdon); 4th, Adam Cowdroy (Greenbaize, Bournemouth).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP B: 1st, Connor Benzey (Chandler’s Ford SC); 2nd, Aidan Murphy (Bristol Conservative Club); 3rd, Kaine Petty (Salisbury SC); 4th, Keegan Reed (Salisbury SC).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP C: 1st, David Rice (Salisbury SC); 2nd, Oliver Sykes (Chandler’s Ford SC); 3rd, Ally Pollard (Salisbury SC); 4th, Steven Hughes (Chandler’s Ford SC).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP D: 1st, David O’Callaghan (Greenbaize, Bournemouth); 2nd, Drew Hampshire (147 SC, Swindon); 3rd, James Beaven (Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon); 4th, Nat Kidner (Greenbaize SC, Bournemouth).

QUARTER-FINALS (12 points): Gibbs 2 Hampshire 1, Sykes 2 Benzey 1, Rice 2 Murphy 1, Pringle 2 O’Callaghan 0.

SEMI-FINALS (15 points): Sykes 2 Gibbs 0, Rice 2 Pringle 1.

FINAL (25/18 points): Sykes 2 Rice 0.

Third win puts Tillison top

Portsmouth potter Ben Tillison has regained the lead in the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour rankings.

The 15-year-old replaced birthday boy Ryan Hughes in first place after beating his title rival from Chandler’s Ford 2-0 in the final of the sixth leg at Fareham Snooker Club.

Tillison needed a snooker on the pink in the first frame and the last five colours in the second to notch up his third tournament win of the season.

Hughes, now 14, is five points adrift with two events left in what has developed into a two-horse race.

While relishing the challenge, Tillison admitted that he does feel the pressure.

“My palms were sweating all the way through (the final) and it was hard to grip my cue,” said the left-hander.

“It was quite tense. I do enjoy it but sometimes it’s overwhelming how important it is.”

Tillison qualified from his group in third place, beat Copnor clubmate Rio Smith 2-0 in the quarter-finals and Arnie Petty (Fordingbridge) 2-1 in the last-four.

Petty received a walkover in the quarter-finals as his opponent, Ben Hatch (Southampton), had left the venue not realising he could still qualify for the knockout.

Third-placed Chloe White (Portsmouth) finished second to Hughes in their round-robin group and then lost 2-0 when the pair met again in the semi-finals.

The seventh leg of eight is at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon, on Sunday, April 10.

BREAKS

Ben Tillison: 25, 23.
Bowen Zhu: 25.
Shane Kearns: 25.
Ryan Hughes: 20.

BRONZE RESULTS

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP A: 1st, Rio Smith (Copnor SC, Portsmouth); 2nd, Ozzy Rea (Greenbaize, Bournemouth); 3rd, Ben Hatch (Southampton); 4th, Ben Crump (Mayfair, Gosport); 5th, Connor Shaw (Greenbaize, Bournemouth).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP B: 1st, Arnie Petty (Salisbury SC); 2nd, Riley Ellis (Jesters, Swindon); 3rd, Ben Tillison (Copnor SC, Portsmouth); 4th, Bowen Zhu (Chandler’s Ford SC); 5th, Callum White (Copnor SC, Portsmouth).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP C: 1st, Ryan Hughes (Chandler’s Ford SC); 2nd, Chloe White (Copnor SC, Portsmouth); 3rd, Harry Joyce (Chandler’s Ford SC); 4th, Shane Kearns (Jesters, Swindon).

QUARTER-FINALS (12 points): Tillison 2 Smith 0, Petty w/o Hatch, Hughes 2 Ellis 1, Chloe White 2 Rea 1.

SEMI-FINALS (15 points): Tillison 2 Petty 1, Hughes 2 Chloe White 0.

FINAL (25/18 points): Tillison 2 Hughes 0.

Another trophy for Beaven

FABULOUS February is but a distant memory for Surrey snooker star James Beaven.

Last month, the 11-year-old from Banstead followed up his first ever tournament win in a Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour event in Woking by reaching the semi-finals of the English Under-14 Championship in Leeds.

But in the sixth leg of the Cuestars circuit at Fareham Snooker Club, Beaven failed to qualify from the group stages.

However, receiving a 14-point handicap start, he did beat Gold Tour player Callum Browne (Trowbridge) in the final of the Plate competition.

PLATE RESULTS (ONE-FRAME MATCHES)

PRELIM: Bowen Zhu (Chandler’s Ford SC) beat Callum White (Copnor SC, Portsmouth).

FIRST ROUND: Ben Crump (Mayfair, Gosport) beat Zhu, Anthony Rice (Salisbury SC) beat Harry Joyce (Chandler’s Ford SC), Nat Kidner (Greenbaize, Bournemouth) beat Arron Smith (Selsey RBL), Callum Browne (Player’s, Westbury) beat Connor Shaw (Greenbaize, Bournemouth), Steven Hughes (Chandler’s Ford SC) beat Kaine Petty (Salisbury SC), James Beaven (Frames, Coulsdon) beat Ally Pollard (Salisbury SC), Shane Kearns (Jesters, Swindon) beat Adam Cowdroy (Greenbaize, Bournemouth).

QUARTER-FINALS: Rice beat Crump, Browne beat Kidner, Keegan Reed (Salisbury SC) beat Hughes, Beaven beat Kearns.

SEMI-FINALS: Browne beat Rice, Beaven beat Reed.
