Junior snooker in Waterlooville

WATERLOOVILLE Sports Bar has announced details of its new junior snooker section.

The go-ahead club that opened just under three weeks ago has already signed World Snooker coach Tim Dunkley to run a Wednesday evening session for boys and girls aged seven to 19.

Owners Suzy and Steve Wilson (Cuestars Gold Tour player Jamie Wilson’s parents) said the cost will be £4.50 for two hours from 4.30-6.30pm. Complete beginners are welcome and the launch date is December 14.

Interested players are urged to ring Suzy on 02392 256808 or send her a message via http://ift.tt/2dK01aE to register their names

The club boasts ten snooker tables - of which half have professional standard Strachan No. 10 cloths - separated by a glass partition from a massive bar area that includes five pool tables, dartboards and a couple of televisions.

Easily reached just off the A3, it is located on the Aston Road Industrial Estate and has a huge free car park and, I’m reliably informed, nice ladies’ toilets – which are probably the two most important things for modern clubs.

The building was formerly Waterlooville Snooker Club, which shut its doors five years ago. It was totally refurbished by new owners Suzy and Steve and opened on September 10 to rave reviews.

Having some practice sessions with j6uk

Hi Guys :)

Just a little write up :)

After picking up snooker again after 8 years,
(I played when I was young (maybe 10-14) cleaning tables to get free hours :)
+ had a few years in between but always quitting after a year or so.
But like a bug it keeps returning :)

So I was playing in our local league for half a year (I'm again playing about a year now) or so and not making much progress,
Got a few 20's and the odd 30 in practice games, always stranding missing a silly one or completely losing position, not knowing where I went wrong, so I was tinkering a lot with technique, (probably creating more problems in the process).

There are not a lot of serious/good players who will have/make the time to help in my area
So I asked for some for some coaching/lessons on here, got some nice reply's & pm's thx for that btw. :)

Jason pm'd me, he was up for having a look and have some sessions in Krakau Poland :)
I had contacted him about a cue before, made me a lovely one btw. tiger maple/macassar ebony which is perfect I must say.

We (my wife & I) where up for a holiday so why not Poland :)
we never been there and it sounded like a small adventure, so off we went for the 1200km road trip with our son (almost 2years) in the back.
(If I ever meet postman pat, I will kill the little ******* WITH his “special delivery” .... lol)

Once we arrived we had a meet in a little square near by the place we were staying, having a chat and some coffee.
I had the feeling we headed of nicely straight away, so we agreed to start our sessions the next day at a local club.
Jason has the keys to this place so he can test his cues before any customers come in, so we had the place to our own.

The next day he picked me up, and started my first session,
we planned it would be nice to have a few hours every day, instead of a few very long ones, (we had 5x 2hours total)

At first Jason just let me play a bit to have a look, noticing I was playing a lot of my shots with screw
(thinking I needed it for position) and explaining me that playing with screw is always a big shot in his opinion.
Showing me different options, and the CB sweet-spot (around the center (around 1 tip up/down) of the CB) something I am really working on at the moment.

And not over complicating things and keep it simple, which is not natural for me :)
always thinking giving it that extra bit is necessary....

A very big thing Jason noticed was, I’m rushing on shots,
me thinking I was being fluent :) Just a few feathers, slight pause at the back and go.

But what I was actually doing was, line up, feather, shoot, no real pauses anywhere….
it "looks" good and on good days it works, but consistency is never there.

So we spent quite some time on this, taking more time: tip at the white, feather a few times, and stop at the white, slow back, pause, and nicely strike the ball.

This was very much easier said than done in my case it all feeling very slow & robotic like

I am just now getting a feeling for this; slow everything down and being much more conscious about what I am doing.

Also made some changes during the week on stance, a bit wider(got quite long legs) and more boxer, a shorter walk in more like a step in which combined makes dropping down on the shot straight much easier & consistent.

We also talked about what I usually do when I practice, which is mostly line-ups / black of the spot & colors.
So Jason put an all red line-up on and asked me to clear them, and told me that's what he did when he wanted to get serious about the game.
Mission :) clear them 3 times (45 pots) keeping position using little (sweet spot) shots in the middle of the table not ending up at the cushion, and not move on with the line-up with colors until you do.

I didn't managed it yet... it proves to be a lot harder than expected & proves a very good lesson in patience & keeping focused on what seems to be a very simple task.

Jason was very patient, even when I was struggling on the easiest tasks, taking time, showing/demonstrating me options.

For me it really was great, and an eye opener seeing someone of Jasons standard/class play and talk about the game, seeing options and opportunities as they present them self on the table.
Being so confident in his skills, that potting and especially positional play really becomes a “game” in itself and make the game look so easy.

Things now start beginning to slot in to place, nothing crazy yet, but I feel I now have a much better base to start progressing.

All in all we had a brilliant time, on and off the table meeting Jason and his family, visiting a great city with lots of history and nice places to go (read bars) :)

I’m sure we’ll be back to visit, have a few games and a laugh
(but without the car & the kid this time I think)

lol, this ended up being quite a story :)

cheers

Riley Aristocrat 10x5 Table Brand New cloth & Cushions

Morning Guys

Not a regular contributor by any sense of the imagination but though I'd drop this here before going off to gumbay ...

I have a Riley Aristocrat 10 x 5 Table in excellent condition, brand new cloth and cushions WoE 6811 (literally played on twice) that I need to sell (with a heavy heart) due to ongoing back issues.

It comes with three or four sets of balls, triangle, light canopy, scoreboard, rests, cues etc and I'm based in Twickenham, West London

Is anyone looking for something like this at the moment?

Cheers

Altering cue length affects cue balance?

My cue's ferrule is just under 9mm. So having the cue shortened by just over an inch ( to accommodate the move to a 9.5mm ferrule ).

At the same time, having the 'lost length from the shaft added into the butt. Would this drastically affect the balance of the cue? I'm thinking even if it did, the difference would not be that bad to give the cue a whole different 'feel' ?

Thank you for your help in advance.

ebay prices

Not been in touch with the scene for a while since a back injury put me out but crikey the sort of prices I'm seeing for vintage cues on ebay like JD147's etc are like crazy prices. Nothing like I paid for my ones back in the day. What's going on? Why are these prices ? I don't get it. Once I start playing again I'll probably start buying & selling cues again & christ knows I got enough but flippin heck prices are nuts

What table and what to do with it?

Hello all,

Just want to start by saying what a great knowledge base for the uninformed, have been using the forum for a while now to get information since inheriting a table in our home we moved to 14 years ago, however after many years of enjoyment (enjoyment of snooker wont end as have watched for 30+ years) I need to make better use of the room where it's kept, so initially looking for advice as I know nothing about the table so any info would be appreciated, hopefully attached photos, but details I have it's 12ft, on one end there's a badge with E.J. Riley Accrington, on the other end Padmore and Sons, legs are turned and above each one there's some type of shield with leaves/tigs carved into,

Defying the laws of physics

Proof that snooker coaches can defy the laws of physics.
Even with a squishy golf ball.

When the clubface collides with the ball it's total contact time is approximately just under 1/2 Millisecond = 400 Microseconds = 0.0004 Seconds = 400/1,000,000 = 4/10.000 Second and the peak force applied to the ball can be as high as 4000 pounds.

1000 Mmilliseconds is equivalent to 1 (one) Second. This was very consistent with different clubs. This was measured with a camera that had 22,000 frames per second.

Talisman Tips

I've been using Talisman softs for at least 3 years if not more.

I generally don't get any issues with them and they play great right off the bat.

I shape them so most of the layer is left on the top with the glue ring close tp the edge so no little pieces of a layer left in the middle to come out later.

If I get a bad one that delaminates it happens pretty quickly (a few days) and then the chances are I will get the same problem with the whole box (x3).

I fitted one 3 weeks ago and it delaminated about half way up after about 2 weeks (no where near the glue at the base).

I fitted anew one last week and looked in the case yesterday and noticed it coming off again but this time the whole of the top layer (maybe 2 layers).

I fit them the same way each time so it's certainly not down to fitting as I fit everyone else's in the club and I rarely get any issues and as I said they play great.

I now have the 3rd on and a league game Friday so fingers crossed!

Has anyone on here discovered any issues and have discovered a way round it?

I always tale a 1/3 to a 1/2 off the tip as it gets rid of the clunky sound and grips perfectly straight away.
I could change tips but I like them!!

Story lads I have no interest in starting another systems aiming etc argument let that be said 1st .

Ive been following snooker secrets videos on you tube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCe_...-SIGTY5fXLM68A and am really enjoying them and noticed that there books and videos to buy and i was wondering did anybody try the books out and if there worth a shout to read, not to religiously say that these are gospel and its a 100% proven that you will become Ronnie quick kinda scheme just to gain a bit more knowledge too see if it helps since roy has so much experience in the game I'm tempted to buy one but don't want to undo any work my coach has done with me so far so I was just wondering are there systems in the book that you have to change your game to or just little tips on how to improve in general ..

Cheers lads

Why playing snooker real good is a microcosmic metaphor for life

Something that I wrote for a seminar I'm doing, thought you guys might like to read / slay / take the ****.

Snooker. Let’s talk about snooker again. There is a point to this. I’ll keep it brief. For those of you who don’t know, snooker is like pool, only on a much bigger table. It requires a better technique than pool. If I don’t practice regularly, my game falls apart, but with pool I can pick it up and play competently even if I haven’t played for a few weeks. Timing on the stroke is everything, you need to be very still, push the cue through in a straight line and follow through on the shot.

To play snooker real good you have to be truly present. Truly in the moment - you have to empty your mind of thoughts. You can’t think about the bad shot you just played before. How would that help you? In its own microcosmic way, you must drop the baggage of the past. Strike it and move on. How many times have I talked myself out of victory in my head because I’ve played 3 or 4 terrible shots in a row? Or just lost a game I should have won? How can I expect to play a good shot, get my timing right, push the cue through correctly when I’m still ruminating on my poor play before, or that missed black ball that meant I lost the last game? When you are down on the shot, as soon as you start thinking about anything at all - the positional side of the shot, or the next shot after that, or how many points you are gonna get, the position you are in the match - you are sunk. The ball won’t go in, you’ll miss-time your shot. I play weekly, and it’s a wonderful weekly practice session for ego-management, boxing the chimp. I’m literally putting the methods I’ve learnt into use in every session.

Stephen Hendry, the most successful snooker player ever with seven world titles to his name, was once asked what was in his mind when he was playing the shot. Turns out he had a mantra of sorts, not that he called it that. His mantra? Get in the pocket you *******. Get in the pocket you *******. Pretty simple. Setting an intention too. The dude knew what he was doing.

The 1980 World Champion Terry Griffiths, who came through qualifying to beat the top players in the world and is now the most sought after coach would sing a song in his head when down on the shot. Exactly the same idea. A barricade to negative thoughts coming in. As a Welshman, the song he chose was Myfanwy. When down on the shot, he would literally be singing this song over and over in his head. If you are singing a song in your head, how can any negative thoughts come in? Pretty useful tool this, to stop negative thoughts getting in the way. He taught this method to fellow Welshman Mark Williams, while coaching him to two World titles, who chose ‘Waltzing Matilda’ as his song of choice.

There’s more to my snooker metaphor. When you play and think positively, and are playing well, the table responds positively to you. Little nudges, canons and kisses go your way. You can make your own luck on a snooker table. It’s a strange phenomenon to observe but it is real. Attack attack! Trust me, I’ve done a lot of on-table research. Hours and hours and hours and hours. Play positively, and good things happen. Exactly like life.

I have a long-standing rivalry with my studio partner Steve. We are pretty evenly matched, which makes for tremendous tussles. We have a shield that passes between us - the erroneously engraved Planck Music Cup - and we play tournaments, first to 9 games, over several sessions. The target provides a storyline and drama in each session. If he gets ahead by a few frames, which can happen, then of course my chimp goes into overdrive. ‘****, if he gets this frame, he’s only two away from winning the tournament’ - and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to put into practice the methods I’m sharing with you today. Sometimes I find myself on a five minute long downward negative thought spiral before I catch myself and sort out my thoughts. I sing a song.

‘Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda, you’ll come a waltzing Matilda with me’
Don’t worry I won’t sing again. Those aren't even the right words. I just looked them up.
We call it the cruel game. You can have the most awful luck on a snooker table, no matter how positively you are playing. Sometimes, it just feels like the snooker gods have got it in for you. You might not get a decent chance at a pot in what seems like an age. It can be so frustrating. An entire game can go by without you feeling like you had a sniff of a chance to get a break going. You watch in pain as the ball runs safe again and again after your opponent makes a mess of his pot. Or you keep going in-off - scratching the white. Sometimes you can give your opponent 20 odd penalty points and in an amateur level club game twenty points is a big deal. I can feel the rage inside me come up and internally I’m screaming ‘just give me a shot! One chance and I’ll get some points on the board!’ and I have to take myself to the toilet, look at myself in the mirror and give myself a good talking to.

How does getting angry serve me in this case? How would getting frustrated at my seemingly bad luck help me win the game?

Strike it and move on. Your luck will turn, it always does. Be patient, and wait for your chance, enjoy the ride. And when that chance comes, don’t invest too much in the outcome. Have a plan in place for your next step, which ball you are playing onto, clear your mind, get down, and be present.

Get in the pocket you *******.

The nearly maximum man carries his bat

ANDOVER cueman John Hunter returned from a summer playing cricket to carry his bat in his first snooker tournament of the new season.

Hunter brushed off the earlier disappointment of a missed maximum chance to claim the first leg of the Cuestars South of England Seniors (40+) Tour.

A 2-1 victory from 1-0 down over Bracknell’s Matt Ford in the final at Greenbaize Snooker Club, Bournemouth, earned him £100.

Ford, the Cuestars Championship Tour winner for the past two seasons, killed off the first frame with a 65 clearance. Hunter, who is based at Salisbury Snooker Club, levelled with a run of 58 and took the decider on the yellow.

“Having no expectations is always a good thing,” said the 50-year-old opening batsman for Penton CC who has not played competitive snooker since the end of last season.

“I keep telling myself, because he looked so good, I’m going to make him earn this. He looked in awesome form.

“It was a surprise because I’ve been playing cricket all summer. I like to have a complete break because you build up scars in snooker. It just refreshes me.”

High Wycombe sharpshooter Nick Birney’s 85 break in his final group-stage match against Jon Walker was eclipsed when Hunter took blacks with the first 12 reds for a 96 against Chris Stocker. But hopes of a first 147 (“a long time ago” he broke down on 120) ended with a failed tricky plant on two of the last three open reds.

“Everything was perfect,” explained Hunter. “If I’d got the (previous) positional shot right, then I really would be shaking because you look at the table and think I’ve not got to do anything, I’ve just got to hold myself together.

“As I said to the guys, 96 is the worst place to finish on a 147. You’re better off with the break ending on the first black!”

Portsmouth ex-professional Mike Talmondt’s bid for a hat-trick of Seniors titles faltered with a 2-1 last-eight defeat by Martin Wallace (Reading). To avoid a three-way tie and a play-off for the second qualifying spot in his round-robin group, Wallace had needed to win at least one frame against Hunter. He duly obliged with a 58 break in the opener.

Dave Pullman (Wokingham) made the semi-finals for the first time and Paul Shears, who is based at the delightfully named Devizes Literary & Scientific Institute, bowed out in the quarter-finals on his Cuestars debut.

The 19-strong field returned 14 half-century breaks.

Fareham Snooker Club hosts the second leg of seven on Sunday, October 23. The top-20 ranked players at the end of the series will play off for £500 prize money in Newbury on April 23.

When to use sidespin

Hello.

I have a few questions. Do you ever use a sidespin when the cue ball does not hit the cushion after the shot? In swerve shot of course and perhaps if you want to come to object ball in a different angle (this is very rare?). I mean is using the sipespin just to get different bounce of the cushion or does it matter on some other ways on the path of the cue ball after hitting the object ball?

Have been arguing with my friend about this and I just want to shut him up..:) And the second reason is that I think I am on the situation that I need to start hitting sidespin occasionally.

Thank you very much for the answers.

Looking to sell my John Parris Classic Cue BUT first... What is red glue?

Hey,

I have not played snooker for about 12 years. Haven't picked up my John Parris Cue for 13 years. It's in mint condition, been hiding away in it's silver case I got with it and i'd like to get a good price for it.

I have been looking on eBay at the sold listings and it seems that cues that mention "red glue" seem to be valued higher?

What has red glue got to do with JP cues and how do I look for it in my cue?

I wanted to find this out before listing it because it might make a difference on the listing. I saw a post on here that JP stopped using it in 2005? I purchased my cue around 15 years ago.

Thanks,
Andy

Snooker Rules

Hi all,

New here but had an argument with my father today, but I know I was right.

I potted the remaining red ball and then since nothing else was on offer potted the yellow.

My argument, its the last remaining red so the yellow should be re-positioned. His argument, once the last red was potted with the yellow, the next ball in play was the green and the yellow remains in the pocket.

Any ideas?

European Qualifiers @ Preston

Some great matches this week, for only a fiver or so the WS site says but the booking site says the 7pm slot is a different ticket to the daytime, any ideas?

As ever never get a reply from WS via email.

Also I don't get the schedule, 63 matches in round 1. How does an odd number of matches work?

Also cannot see Ronnie's second round match listed to see who he might play.

Match 44 on day 2 but not listed on day 3, 30 matches listed for day three so looks like 2 matches at least held over to the venue which WS doesn't state either.

Any thoughts?

took me a couple of hours this morning, should really have taken progress pics but got too carried away! basically I cut the old tip and ferrule off then cut a ring into the shaft with a Stanley blade then chiselled it down to the inside diameter of the new ferrule and fine tuned it with a file, I had to adjust it a couple of times and move the ferrule further down the shaft to match the diameter but I got there in the end! ... its definitely not a professional job but hopefully it will do the trick.

specs are roughly
55.75inch down from 57.5
16.5oz
bp 14.5
10.5mm fibre ferrule with phenolic tip (was 9.5)

Judd Trump Set-up

Ok, maybe not the best day to discuss given what happened in Shanghai.

So I'm finishing a session this lunch, got 15mins spare and just messin around, which I like to do, see how many amazin balls I can nail; free sparring I calls it. I'm over the top end hole facing a long red, a foot away, CB 18'' off both cushions, pretty straight. Obvious shot is to play a stop shot and pot the black afterwards. Then I'm wonderin if I can top spin the ball and take the CB off the middle of the baulk cushion and back down, landing on the black. I'm thinking, Ace, you can screw 24ft with your shizzle but top spinin the ball 24ft is a big ask given I generally rake slightly higher than rail height (this helps screw). Ka-ching, play it like Judd! So I gets down in the JT stance, L shoulder down and slightly tucked in, cueing under the sternum and nipple, brushing the hip. And I thought, the shot is easy, simply hit it as smoothly and as hard as you can on the heighest point on the CB without miscueing. And whatever you do Ace, pause the stroke, and look at the OB last!

So that's what I did and man, I nailed that ball and took the CB all the way to the baulk and back to the top cushion, then cut back potted the black in (with the JT set-up again) from the top cushion.

Tried it a few more times and like wow, that's the best travel I've ever had on a CB. Now remember, this is a slowish 6811T not a no.10 so I reckon maybe 30ft+ on a no.10. Tried some stun and run through shots and noticed more travel than usual again.

So the JT set-up is pretty low down; sniper territory. Ran out of time but thinking of trying it out again, next time in the balls, opening the pack, etc. Incredible power?

Has anyone tried the JT set-up and what did you find?

Would your pool team or business like a new logo?

Good afternoon, everyone.

A friend is organising a fundraising day on the 13th November in aid of Dogs Trust and I would like to contribute in terms of time and effort if possible.

Some time ago I designed a pool ball logo for a buddy, posted it up online for critique, and was then contacted by a few folks to commission something similar for their own pool team, business, or just as a personal badge for themselves.

So, here's my offer. If anyone is interested, post up your requirements on this thread and I will spend a few hours sketching ideas on paper until a concept emerges that is worthy of progressing to the next level. I will then take to the computer and dedicate another four or five hours drawing something that resembles one of the completed designs shown below in low resolution.

Hopefully, you will be pleased with my efforts at this stage. If not, tell me what you don't like and, if it's something that can be revised relatively quickly, I will go away and make the necessary amendments. If you're really not impressed with the design at all, no problem, I'll put it down to experience and we'll part with no hard feelings and no charge whatsoever.

If I manage to come up with the goods to your complete satifaction, however, the total fee will be £40, one hundred percent of which will be given to my friend for his fundraising efforts. I will then email you the logo in a high resolution format of your choice (much better quality than the samples pictured below).

Many thanks for reading.

This design was commissioned by an American pool playing team over here in England. The Stars & Stripes featuring an emblem of their county, Devon, the three hares.

This one was for a business. A stylised Union Jack flag with a new company logo based around a capital R and components of the .com suffix.

A personal badge for a player who wished to incorporate his nickname and national flag. I created him a logo playing on his initial glyphed into a gremlin of sorts with a devil's horns and tail.

Would your pool team or business like a new logo?

New tables in near future?

Seb leads Q School race

SWINDON snooker ace Seb Worrall has taken an early lead in the race for a coveted place at Q School.

The 34-year-old took advantage of home tables to win the first leg of the Cuestars South of England Championship Tour at Jesters Snooker Club.

Worrall, who pocketed £150 prize money, fired in an 88 break in the second frame of a 3-0 victory over Southampton’s Town Champion Mike Finn in the final.

“Beating Mike Finn in the final was a good achievement as he is a great player,” he said. “Although a bad back may have hampered him a little.”

Worrall lost only one of his 21 frames throughout the Absolute Snooker-sponsored event and has now won four of the last six Championship Tour legs that he has entered in Swindon.

“I always play well at Jesters as it is my local club,” he explained.

And he added: “I was just happy to get out of the group but what tends to happen is the deeper I go in a tournament the better I play.”

The rankings winner at the end of the eight-leg campaign earns a free place at Q School, World Snooker’s end-of-season double header from which the four semi-finalists receive two-year cards for the professional circuit.

Cautious about his prospects, Worrall admitted: “Realistically it’s a long shot - but you never know.”

Meanwhile, Cuestars director John Hunter hailed the 35-strong turnout as “fantastic”.

The high-quality field returned 29 breaks of 50 or more. Finn recorded the highest of 96 in his 3-2 last-four victory over Churchills teammate Billy Castle. Christian Chislett, beaten 3-0 by Worrall in the second semi, was the most prolific half-century breaker with five – one more than Castle’s four.

Matt Ford’s bid for a hat-trick of rankings titles faltered with a 3-2 defeat in the quarter-finals by Callum Lloyd, one of a five-strong contingent from Wales.

The second leg of eight is at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club on Sunday, October 16.

Sponsor Absolute Snooker is a national independent company specialising in table recovering and maintenance. The Swansea-based firm also offers a wide range of cues, cases and accessories for snooker, pool and billiards. For more information, go to http://ift.tt/2cEjJTg.

Unclevit Cue and Cheddar Classic case

Selling my Unclevit cue on eBay, one of the last Unclevit cues from this forum before he disappeared, not sure if there are people still waiting on their orders or if he came good? Anyway after waiting well over a year and thinking my money was lost both my cues did eventually arrive, a matching pair for pool and snooker. The snooker one is now for sale on eBay, it's a maple cue with payoong and ebony splicing. Payoong is a rare protected wood in Thailand but he did say it was properly sourced same as his other rare splicing woods. It is a stunning red wood on the cue. The cue is badged "Master Cue Exclusive", I just wanted one of his "C-Brand" badges but this is what it came with and I was just glad the cues finally came. £140 delivered to a forum member if paid by BT or paypal gift. I will get further photos up tonight as the lighting last night was making the butt wood look brown, it''s much more of a red in real life.

Tip - 9.5mm, Butt - 28.3mm, Length - 57.5 inches, Weight - 17.8 ounces.
http://ift.tt/2cMFUHK

Also selling a Cheddar Classic 1 piece leather cue case which I bought off a member of this forum. I had intended to get it refurbished but I know if I did I wound never use it as I would be too worried about it getting damaged so I'm going to stick with my Halo case that has already got a fair few marks on it despite being very careful with it. Its navy blue with two tone blue suede interior. The case was well used before I received it and has several scratches and marks on it. The case is still solid and functional, its far from perfect but considering its age and that is had been used regularly its still in decent nick. One end is very good the other has wear. Quite rare cases nowadays and you can tell by the weight of it how well made it is. Not really sure what the value of this case is (and if anyone can help me with a value that would be appreciated) but thinking around £100 + cost of postage. I will get photos up on the listing tonight.

Hitting from the elbow .

I can't find the thread I read 2 weeks ago but ut suggested hitting from the elbow, a term I have not heard of before.

I have given it a go the last 3 session as I have been a little erratic lately and won 8-1, 4-0 and 7-1 today, the 7-1 against a partner who has beaten me the last 3 weeks previously.

Although I haven't quite got it I've had 3x 60's, 3x 50's a couple of 40's and countless 30's so not quite there but scoring most times. and safety has improved dramatically in control to baulk cushion.

I would like to know a little more as at the moment I am imagining my elbow movement for control where previously my focus seemed to be on hand opening / closing and feeling it.

Concentrating on my elbow has made everything a stroke (I imagine the feel like a 10ft putt at golf) and even helped my pause.

The only thing creeping in at the moment when pausing is fighting that inner "give it crack" when not quite confident; still managing to deliver it smoothly on most longer shots but I can hear a couple of the monkeys arguing which is distracting my rhythm on the odd occasion.

As I haven't heard of this term before (hitting from the elbow), I thought I would ask if there's anything else to this thinking while I am trying to adopt it into my game.

By the way, whoever brought it up up, cheers, feels like it has some foundation to help me along a bit!

What is the best way to prepare the cue shaft before applying the oil and what is the best way to apply the oil to the shaft and how many coats etc? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Stretching, Centering and Other Strategies

Recently I've been playing around with techniques and strategies to prepare myself for competition and deal with stress and pressure better and I wanted to share what I've found and hear what others do. I have noticed that a lot of the better players seem to perform closer to their practice game than others. I've always felt I performed around 40-50% of my practice game, but I've never really done anything about it other than focusing on a tighter technique.

Obviously, better technique will play a large part, but I've begun looking at how anxiety and stress physically manifest itself in my game. The main thing is tension in my arms, hands and the rest of the body which leads to flinching and twitching as I hit the ball. Little movements that reduce my accuracy, particularily on shots with power. Shallow breathing when stressed and nervous will result in poor decision making. Put these things together and you get flubbed shots and goofy decisions.

The first thing I came across is something called centering. Some of it seems a bit goofy, but the main things that work are being mindful of you breathing and releasing tension in your muscles. Here is a link that explains it more.

http://ift.tt/2cnlF5q
Muscle Relaxation http://ift.tt/28UtXuU

I've also started doing some bicep and triceps stretches before playing which also loosens up the muscles.

Finally the only thing I've been focusing on during a match is keeping still and freezing until the ball falls into a pocket (or misses).

The focus on reduction of movement and flinching has helped a lot. I haven't had opportunity for many matches recently, but if I have played poorly I've been able to turn my game around. And I've been playing much closer to what I would consider my relaxed practice game.

I've been doing centering and muscle relaxation stuff over the last couple weeks and I've been playing well every day so far. Too soon for me to conclusively say it works, but things are looking good for the moment.

I'm interested in anyones thoughts, if you've tried anything like this or if you have any other ideas or suggestions to maximize playing potential during match play.

Is This Stuff Any Good To Use On Cue Shaft???

It's called 'Lord Sheraton Caretaker Wood Balsam' with pure beeswax, pine turpentine & linseed oil. Is this good to use to finish a cue & if so what's the best way to prepare the cue before applying this & what is the best way to apply this? Any advice would be great. I'm looking for tips from start to finish on how to get a dirty cue in a really good condition if possible.

Even a car park barrier can’t stop Lloyd

A LOCKED car park in Leeds failed to scupper a Gosport teenager’s hopes of winning a snooker tournament in Woking.

Sympathetic organisers allowed Mark Lloyd to arrive an hour late for the first leg of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour.

And the 16-year-old emerged triumphant from a strong field of 17 seven hours later with the winner’s trophy and £65 prize money.

English Under-18 Championship winner Lloyd defeated fellow EASB Premier Junior Tour (PJT) player Ronnie Blake (London) 3-0 in the final.

“Ronnie played well,” he said. “I played him when I was in the regionals (EASB Regional Junior Tour South) and we had a few good games in that.”

The previous day, Lloyd was competing in the first leg of the PJT at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds.

After failing to qualify for the second day, his party decided to set off at 6am for the 200 mile, three-and-a-half-hour journey, down the M1 to the Parris Cues-sponsored event at Woking Snooker Centre.

But they were forced to wait nearly two hours until staff unlocked the barrier to the club car park.

“I was planning to get here for 9.30am,” explained Lloyd. “But they decided to put the barrier down so we couldn’t get the car out. That delayed us a bit.

“You can’t really do anything about it. I was shattered before I even got here.”

Meanwhile, Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club lads Steven Hughes and Oliver Sykes made dream debuts at the higher level by reaching the semi-finals.

Hughes, last season’s Silver play-off champion, had a fine 2-1 win against Bradley Cowdroy (Bournemouth) in the quarter-finals before losing 2-1 to Lloyd. All of the 15-year-old’s entry fees to Cuestars tournaments this season are being covered by sponsor Vankru Cycling.

And ten-year-old Sykes beat English Under-14 Championship runner-up Jamie Wilson (Havant) and Londoner Adam Stacey to top his four-man round-robin group. The phenomenal left-hander then overcame Callum Browne (Trowbridge) 2-0 in the first knockout round before going out in a close 2-1 last-four match to Blake.

Mickey Joyce, who went down 2-0 to Blake in the quarter-finals, has joined the ton-up club. The 13-year-old from Basingstoke cleared the table for 102 in a practice match two days before a “tough” debut on the PJT in Leeds.

The second leg of ten, sponsored by Attic Life, is at Salisbury Snooker Club on Sunday, October 2.

Ryan’s dream debut

RYAN Hughes twice needed a snooker to cap a dream debut on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour.

Last season’s Bronze Tour double winner kicked off life on the second tier with a nail-biting 2-0 victory over Charlie Pringle to clinch the first leg at Woking Snooker Centre.

That means the 14-year-old has now won six of his last nine tournaments on the junior circuit.

After taking the first frame of the final on the black against his clubmate from Chandler’s Ford SC, Hughes extracted the penalty points from the required snooker in the next before committing a foul himself.

With the cue-ball ten feet away from the pink and black, which were both close to a corner pocket, he was rightly asked to play again.

But Hughes took a calculated gamble and laid a peach of a snooker from which his 15-year-old opponent failed to escape.

Reflecting on Pringle’s decision, after mopping up the last two colours, he said: “I would have done the same. I was worried about going in-off but I already needed snookers so I could take risks.”

And he added: “I thought I was ready for (the Silver Tour) but, coming into the day, I wasn’t expecting to win it. I was hoping to get through my group but I didn’t know how far I’d get after that.”

Pringle had beaten Hughes 2-0 in the round-robin group stages of the Parris Cues-sponsored event before edging a hard-fought 2-1 last-four victory over Harry Jones (Coulsdon).

In the second semi, Hughes overcame Group A winner David O’Callaghan (Bournemouth) 2-0.

The second leg of ten, sponsored by Attic Life, is at Salisbury Snooker Club on Sunday, October 2.

BREAKS

Charlie Pringle: 54.

SILVER RESULTS

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP A: 1st, David O’Callaghan (Greenbaize, Bournemouth); 2nd, Harry Jones (Frames, Coulsdon); 3rd, Ally Pollard (Salisbury SC); 4th, Kaine Petty (Salisbury SC); 5th, Ben Tillison (Copnor SC, Portsmouth).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP B: 1st, Charlie Pringle (Chandler’s Ford SC); 2nd, Ryan Hughes (Chandler’s Ford SC); 3rd, Nat Kidner (Greenbaize SC, Bournemouth); 4th, Keegan Reed (Salisbury SC).

SEMI-FINALS (15 points): Hughes 2 O’Callaghan 0, Pringle 2 Jones 1.

FINAL (25/18 points): Hughes 2 Pringle 0.

Trophy-laden day for Jesters duo

TWO teenagers from Jesters Snooker Club in Swindon dominated the first leg of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour.

Shane Kearns defeated his frequent travelling companion Riley Ellis 2-0 in the final of the Parris Cues-sponsored event at Woking Snooker Centre.

The 14-year-old, runner-up in Coulsdon last December, clawed back a sizeable deficit in the second frame to kick off his third season on the junior circuit with a first winner’s trophy.

“It feels good,” he said. “Somehow I managed to pull it back from 30 points behind.”

Talking about playing his clubmate in such an important match, Kearns added: “It makes it harder because, at the same time, you want both of you to win.”

The Year 10 pupil at The Dorcan Academy finished last season ranked fifth, one place below 12-year-old Ellis. First time finalist Ellis, who is in his second season, recently increased his high break in competition to 33. Both are sure to feature in the end-of-season title race.

Essex lad Thomas Saunders marked his Cuestars debut by winning a three-way play-off for the fourth qualifying spot from his round-robin group before taking a frame off Ellis in the last-eight.

More than four years since his last Bronze Tour outing, Ashley Smith (Portsmouth) won all five of his group-stage matches and lost 2-1 to Kearns in the quarter-finals.

And beaten semi-finalist Callum White (Havant) recorded the highest break of 27 in the group stages. The 16-year-old was knocked out 2-0 by Kearns while his sister Chloe, 15, lost 2-0 at the same stage to Ellis.

The second leg of ten, sponsored by Attic Life, is at Salisbury Snooker Club on Sunday, October 2.

BREAKS

Callum White: 27.
Riley Ellis: 23.
Ashley Smith: 23.

BRONZE RESULTS

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP A: 1st, Ashley Smith (Copnor SC, Portsmouth); 2nd, Chloe White (Copnor SC, Portsmouth); 3rd, Callum White (Copnor SC, Portsmouth); 4th, Thomas Saunders (Stepfield SC, Witham, Essex); 5th, Harry Joyce (Chandler’s Ford SC); 6th, Adam Cowdroy (Greenbaize, Bournemouth).

ROUND-ROBIN GROUP B: 1st, Riley Ellis (Jesters, Swindon); 2nd, Rio Smith (Copnor SC, Portsmouth); 3rd, Arnie Petty (Salisbury SC); 4th, Shane Kearns (Jesters, Swindon); 5th, Will Forster (Mayfair, Gosport).

QUARTER-FINALS (12 points): Kearns 2 A Smith 1, Callum White 2 R Smith 0, Chloe White 2 Petty 0, Ellis 2 Saunders 1.

FINAL (25/18 points): Kearns 2 Ellis 0.

The second leg of ten, sponsored by Attic Life, is at Salisbury Snooker Club on Sunday, October 2.

BREAKS

Antique Ivory Billiard Balls once used by Tom Reece in world record break

I had an elderly aunt die a few weeks ago and when sorting her house out i came across a set of ivory billiard balls.
Included with the balls was a small card that states the following:

"The Set of Balls used by me in the 499135 break.
T. Reece"

I understand that this break took place over 5 weeks in 1907.

I also have a letter dated 1968 offering these ivories for sale and the receipt indicating these were a legitimate purchase.

I was hoping that someone would be able to tell me how much these items are worth.

I can send a photo of the balls for your reference if required and they do come in their original leather case

Tip question

Hi folks,

I've just fitted a Mike Wooldridge tip to my cue, ready for my first century break :biggrin-new:

My question is, what do you chaps do with your tip, whatever make it may be, do you actually 'dome' it or, do you merely 'curve' it. hope you understand what I'm saying.

Precision Potting for pool/snooker - Free Evaluation Trial

Hi everyone,

https://youtu.be/tvGEu2AFNL0

As an amateur, I have developed a new potting technique that is different from those in the market. No professional can develop this technique for a simple reason. They have learnt and practiced A, B, C to Z.

For me, I am probably at M. Since then, I have been struggling to improve. Lack of time and lack of finances force me to look elsewhere to improve my game of pool.

Finally I hit jackpot. Instead of M, N, O ... to Z like the conventional way, I am now doing M, N1, O1, P1 , V, W, X, Y and Z. My new method is a break through in the game of pool/snooker. My pool/snooker shooting technique takes on a different route from what the expert took when they were an amateur.

Experts are not able to come up with this technique because they will not go back to M and find an alternate route, especially since the original route proves successful to them although it takes a long time to achieve it.

Precision potting is easy to learn and it probably takes a few session to master the simple skill of potting with english accurately (with precision) regardless of distance.

I am looking for 20 players in this forum, who are average players, to take up this challenge. I will send you the NDA for you to sign. After which, I will send to you the Precision Potting Program/Manual for you to follow. Thereafter, I hope you can write an honest review (minus the details of the technique) and post it in my youtube teaser on Precision Potting.

If you are interested, please pm your email address (so that I can send you the NDA) and also your nationality (time zone difference).

Is Mike Wooldridge Liquid Gold Cue Oil Any Good???

Has anyone on this forum used this oil and is it any good? Do you apply the oil with a paint brush to the shaft or do you put the oil on a cloth and then rub it into the shaft? Also do you wire wool the shaft before putting the oil on or not?

Practise tips

Hi,

I've been playing for a while but not really improving. Part of the problem is that I have chronic headaches and I struggle to concentrate. I have the mindset that there's no point practising because I've got a headache and so therefore it's pointless as I'll play badly. However I want to see if it will help me by practising more, regardless of headaches.

Could someone recommend me a practise routine. At the moment I'm a regular 20 break player with the odd 30 and 40, but think I could get a lot better with more focus. Also how much do you need to practise?

Finally, I'm looking to play better players. I'm based in the west midlands and would like to play really good standard players as at the moment I'm playing people who are similar standard or worse. Is there anyone in the west midlands area that would like a game? Thanks

Help finding... Presentation name plates for cues.

Hi guys,

Does anyone know where I can order / purchase personalised name plates for cues?
All sizes and shapes, e.g. 16mm round, 2" rectangular.

Any material will do the job as long as words / letters can be engraved.

I've restored a couple of cues, but they have no name plates. Any help would be great! :snooker:

The forward stroke, in the cue action

In my game everything seems to be about my grip, if I can stop it getting involved I can play to a half decent club standard but I have two issues with it, one is closing too soon, but the other is ,at the end of the backswing I have a pause, then because I have come to a stop I have to get my cue going again. These first couple or three inches can be a killer to me as I can use my hand to get my cue going ,and of course that's the grip involved way way too early, or worse a little bit of shoulder, what's the answer to getting the cue going again, without use of the hand, thanks Jim.

Hello you lovely bunch

I can’t remember the exact moment I fell in love with snooker but I do remember being about 5 years old, roaming between the tables at the Ripley Star club, the private members club in our tiny faux-French style village in North Yorkshire. My friend Anthony’s Mum was the caretaker of the club and as she hoovered we were allowed to run riot in the games room. All manner of cue sports lived here, from the vast slate slabs of seemingly endless baize of the 12 ft x 6 ft full size snooker tables, the young upstart that was the 8 ball English pool table and the strange upturned mushrooms of the bar billiards table. To me this vast room of adult pleasures was glorious. I read a study that claimed that what happens in the first five years of a child’s life is very, very important. This period is critical to the child’s development of imagination and creativity. Well snooker got stuck in there. I was really lucky, my Dad was in a band so I was surrounded by musical instruments and songs being written in our front room in our tiny tied cottage (my mum worked in the farmhouse each morning in lieu of rent.)

...and then fast forward to 1985 and the black ball finish. I was 12 and it was the latest I'd ever been allowed to stay up and the whole family was glued to watch Dennis Taylor wagging his finger :) I wanted Steve to win though. Boy, did I love the Nugget. I played in the local Harrogate league when I was 18 - 21, before I left to go down south for university. I started off playing for a working men's club, which to my shame I can't remember the name of, before moving up to play for the Harrogate Leisure Center, which at the time was called Hammerain House.

I always played pool, but I let snooker fall by the wayside until two years ago, aged 41, I took it back up again properly. Why do we stop doing the things we love as we get older? Dunno. I play at least once a week at the Hurricane Club in Kings Cross, London. I'm much better tactically than I was in my early 20s, because I've watched several thousand hours of snooker since then, learning.

My high break was 50 odd when I was younger, and now in the last couple of years in 35. I need some coaching really.

Are You a Hooker or a Slicer?

So, Ronnie says he's a hooker but prefers slice.

Ronnie plays with his right hand mostly and cues across the chest under his dominant left eye. But he feels his best shot is with his left hand under his left eye which he describes as slice. He's probably a bit less under the chest with the cue position with this shot. He uses this alignment to break as he feels he has more CB control and less unwanted side. Mark Allen is a case of extreme slice and he's done great with it.

But then we have Tramp and Robbo, who are great hookers and earn a lot of money as hookers.

How about you? Is it better to be a hooker or a slicer?

Chalk Dust Coming Off My Tip Onto Table!

As the title says I have noticed that when I play there is a lot of chalk dust that comes off my tip onto the table when I hit the cue ball (obviously a lot more when playing screw shots but this happens a lot on other shots as well). I have always used Triangle Chalk but recently tried Masters Chalk because of this problem but the problem is even worse with the Masters Chalk & now I have gone back to the Triangle Chalk. Is this problem because of the chalk itself or the tip & is there any way to stop or reduce the amount of chalk that keeps coming off my tip and onto the table when I play shots & does anyone else have problems with this? Any advice would be appreciated.

Help me remember a match!

Hey guys, this is driving me a bit bonkers......

Can anyone help me remember who one of Ronnie's opponents was in the past few years from the following vague clues.... LOL

It was Ronnie vs ???????? Ronnie took an early lead and the young lad (ginger I think) started to come back at him.

I remember that the lad got a few chuckles from the audience and was quite a character. I think it finished 6-4 in the end to Ronnie, but am unsure of the scoreline.

Pretty sure the chap had a both leg bent stance as he was quite tall.

After the match Ronnie said "That kid's got game" about him, I also believe that he was compared to Steve Davis.

I've had a look at the ginger nuts on the tour and been on youtube to see what I can find. On there was Ben Woolaston vs Ronnie in the UK in 2014, but the scoreline wasn't as close and I remembered, so not sure that's the match I'm thinking of. I'll watch more of that match to see if it's the one I'm (mis)remembering.

Am I going mad and dreaming something that didn't happen?! lol

Hunt & O'Byrne 1/2 joint, hand spliced cue

Hi,

I have a Hunt & O'Byrne (green label) 1/2 joint, hand spliced cue which I bought in 2001 in the Netherlands (I live in the Netherlands). I hardly used it and for many years it has been lying in its case (which I bought along with the cue). I looked up Hunt & O'Byrne on the internet and it appears that this is not your everyday manufacturer of cues. Through the forum I would like to find out a little more about this cue. Also, I may be looking to sell it.

Dimensions:
  • Length: 57 inch
  • Tip: 9 mm
  • Weight: approx. 17.5 ounces

In order to be able to show some photos, I created an eBay listing: http://ift.tt/2c3UKZ6?

Black Ball Re-Spot Serious Confusion...Help!!!

At the end of the game I was playing I needed just the blue & pink to win, I potted the blue & pink which put my opponent 14 points behind at this stage. I then went to pot the black straight after potting the blue & pink but rattled the black in the pocket & then went in off with the white. This then put my opponent just 7 points behind with the foul added on to his points. Then I had a discussion with my opponent that it didn't matter & that I had already won the frame but he thought that the white comes back up into anywhere in the 'D' and that it his his shot with the black hanging over the pocket, he then pots the black over the pocket leaving him equal with my score. So then I toss a coin, I win the toss & decide to put him in first, he plays a bad safety, I miss a fairly hard pot and leave the black on & then he pots the black & says he has won. I'm sure this is not right & that I should've won the frame even with me going in off the black. Can anyone clarity this?

Would this also apply in the following situation where the red is partially obstructed by another red. I think yes because the rule mentions "not obstructed by a colour

what happens in these situations

Hi,

There are a few scenarios i would be grateful to get clarified:

1) an opponent requires snookers, i make a foul resulting in a free ball to my opponent. Can he roll up tight behind his nominated ball to get me snookered. What if he goes for the pot on his nominated ball, misses and i am then snookered as a result?

2) I have a free ball, pot it (as a substitute for a red) but then snooker myself on a colour. I'm assuming i have to make an escape. Can my opponent make me retake if i miss a colour?

3) i pot a red, and the cue ball lands between a group of reds making it impossible to hit a colour, what happens in this situation.

4) black is final ball. I am leading by 7 points. I pot the cue ball, does the black get respotted? If so, what happens if i pot the cue ball again? Does this slightly change if i am 25 points ahead or say 3 points behind?

5) Apologies for non snooker question but related to the black ball scenario. In 8 ball pool, black is over pocket and is my final ball. My opponent fouls and i am snookered, what can i do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
