2016 China Championship

It's no ranking event, but 200.000 pounds for the winner are probably more promising for the players anyway.
On one hand it's pity that we have only 16 players in this tournament. On the other hand having just 16 of the best players in the world should guarantee for some good matches as well as the fact that the first two rounds are at least played Best-of-11. Semifinals Best-of-17 and the Final Best-of-19.

The main draw is:
Selby - McGill
Allen - Walden
J. Higgins - M. Williams
Trump - Carter

Murphy - Perry
Ding - Fu
Robertson - Holt
Bingham - Liang

So we pretty much have eight promising matches already in the first round.

Fitting a cue extension for an old cue.

Thinking to install a brass pin/socket for an old cue in order to use a mini extension.

Will installing a brass pin/socket change the weight or the balance of the cue. If so by how much?

SPLASHDOWN! (The Diary of the Great One)

Thursday, 28th October 2016 ~

I Woke up with a stonking bit of wood. Reached down under the duvet and realised I’d gone to bed with some angel ash by mistake! What's this wonderful cue doing in me scratcher?

Got downstairs and the cat chose kibbles for brekky. He definitely seems to swerve wet food in the colder months. After looking into the sock drawer, I chose a pair of purple spotted numbers for that regal touch. Obsession, definitely, something that smells great in the afternoon; three squirts it is. Checked the mirror, how am I looking? I’m looking goodddddddddddddd!

So, should I play snooker today? Yes I thought, who knows, a maxi or two or a cue launch through a window. Such is the mercurial world of stick and ball. Once I got to the table, brief sympathies passed through my mind about poor old 30-breakers machining and flogging bad cues to poor punters. Like a 16 break or some poor myopic sucker desperately staring at the cue ball I thought; how depressing – LOL! Ok, that’s cheered me up no end! Lots of smiles and off we go potting.

 Cleared the table; job done. Snooker; sublime bliss.

Two piece portable rest.

Does anyone know if it's possible to buy a two piece portable rest? The sort of thing I have in mind would be mid-jointed & slightly shorter than an average cue.It would have a removeable head with a full metal-to-metal joint & ideally have different inter-changeable rest heads - i.e. cross head & spider.

Best cue makers

Hi all,

Had my MW cue stolen need to order a new cue but not sure who to go to? Can anyone suggest a top quality maker who hasn't got a huge waiting time (Parris ultimate cue and coutts supreme out of question). I've been given names of Kevin DeRoo, Jason Owen and another is Maximus of Thailand but I know very little about these cuemakers. Can't afford another Wooldridge VCM my budget is around £400-£600. Any help be great cheers

Question re 'Free ball'

We were playing a game recently and a foul resulted in a free ball situation, The opponent nominated the Black as the free ball but then had a lapse of concentration and rolled up tight behind the Black. Obviously a foul was called but, someone else in the room said "7 away". My own thoughts were "4 away"

Who is correct please?

Many thanks.

Even the brass joints are looking black in colour and I assume this should not be the case with an new cue made a month back.

My new cue is lighter than expected

Hi guys, I got my new cue last week, it's great cue and looks beautiful. However, I checked the weight, it's a bit lighter than what I requested for.

It's my first time to order a custom hand made cue from U.K., I'm not going to complain, just curious is that normal?

I requested for 18oz and now is 17.56oz.

Thanks.

Side Deflection on Cue Ball

Do you hold the cue in the same place?

Hi all,

After playing snooker for the last 30 years with the same cue I decided to buy a new cue today. The main reason for this was because I had my cue shortened by 3 inches around 10 years ago (I'm only 5ft 4in and thought it would improve my game), and whilst I have played well with it I felt I couldn't perform some shots as well as I wasn't following through like I used to.

Anyway, I've bought a cue that has quite a distinctive grain in the ash that goes near to the top of the cue (a bit like Kyren Wilson's), and when I played a few shots with it in the shop I thought the grain helped me sight the shot. Now that I've bought the cue and spent a few hours playing with it I'm finding it a pain to hold it in the same place so the grain lines up with my shot! I'm wondering if this is just down to playing with a new cue and I should stick to holding it in the same place, i.e looking at my hand and cue and checking it's in the right place before I play my shot, as I'm acquiring a new skill I'm thinking this should become automatic after a while. After checking my hand and cue position I find myself twisting my wrist to line up the grain which I don't think is a good thing. On the other hand should I ignore the grain etc and just get on with the shot?

Thanks for any replies.

newbie needs cue advice

hi there, new here obviously! I am a south African living in Brighton UK and a friend of mine back home wants me to get her a cue for her bday. I used to play league pool around 20 years ago, I don't think I even know what a good cue is anymore.

So maybe you can help?

these are her requirements

the weight needs to be 16,5 ounces
she wanted a kamui cue but for the life of me I can't find that anywhere online only a kamui tip
she also said she wanted a one piece because it lasts longer (I will be travelling back to south Africa with this so I honestly think getting a two piece is going to be better, thoughts on that?)
she also said it shouldn't be too tall, about my size (im 5.1 inches)

anyway I don't want to spend a fortune, how much will a decent cue cost me and any advice around brands etc. also if anyone knows a good shop or online site where I can get one around brighton (or central London) that would be great.

hope this isn't too much of a mouth ful

Hi all!
The cue is 59" , 19oz, 28,5cm and ferrule is 9,4mm balance point 18" I dont remember witch wood the splices are.

I bought this cue from Robin Hull (the only Finnish professional) in 2012 when he was making his comeback. He plays at the same club as i. I?m selling this cue because i haven?t played that much anymore and would like to buy a new cue :)

The cue is straight as an arrow and in great condition exept for the small crack in the front splice( does not affect the feel of the cue) It comes with telescopic extension, minibutt and an aluminium case which is not in top condition but does it?s job.

Here is a top quality cue from the best cuemaker in the world. Truly a collectors item and also a wonderful playing cue with beautiful soft feel.

Cue makers with excellent craftmanship

Hi,

I have been looking up various cue makers in the past wks. Originally all set looking at ordering a JP Paragon one piece...but now having second thoughts, considering Mike Wooldridge, Trevor White, Will Hunt...
Only trouble is...it seems like many of these cue makers are so busy that they don't really work on the cues themselves anymore. Will Hunt's cues have distributors in Macau and Hong Kong I believe, which mean mass production and poorer quality??

Talmondt hat-trick bid back on track

PORTSMOUTH singles champion Mike Talmondt has reignited his bid for a hat-trick of titles on the Cuestars South of England Seniors (40+) Tour.

The ex-professional bounced back from a disappointing quarter-final exit in Bournemouth last month to win the second leg at Fareham Snooker Club.

Talmondt pocketed £100 prize money after edging Bracknell star Matt Ford 2-1 on the black in the final of the Dransfields-sponsored event on one of the club’s pair of professional standard Star tables.

But he insisted: “Matt deserved to win the final. He played better than me.

“The table was beautiful but I was cueing across the white all day and I struggled with the pace of it.”

Talmondt took the lead thanks to a delicately played side-spin shot that made the angle to pot a slightly obscured green, similar to his shot on the brown that effectively wrapped up his 2-1 semi-final victory over leg-one winner John Hunter (Andover).

The 43-year-old taxi driver conceded with two reds left in the next but won the decider on the last ball. Ford looked favourite following a 46 break but his opponent clawed back the deficit, potted an ultra-thin pink into the middle, sent the cue-ball up and down the table and potted a tricky high black for the match.

“The pot (on the pink) was easier than the safety so I had to go for it,” explained Talmondt.

Earlier, former champion Hunter fluked the pink to beat Martin Wallace (Reading) 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

Ford needed a snooker in the deciding frame of his 2-1 semi-final success over Wayne Muddiman (Southampton).

And new boy Dan Hammond (Winchester) missed the black for a 2-0 victory over Talmondt in his first group-stage match - and lost 2-1.

Ford’s 68 break against Dave Pullman (Wokingham) in the group stages was the day’s highest.

Hunter remains top of the rankings, three points clear of Talmondt and four ahead of Ford.

Woking Snooker Centre hosts the third leg of seven on Sunday, November 20. The top-20 ranked players at the end of the series will play off for £500 prize money in Newbury on April 23.

Leeds-based Dransfields is the UK’s largest independent supplier of gaming and amusement machines to pubs and clubs. For more information, go to www.dransfields.com.

Issue with deep screw shots - hitting vs timing

Evening all,

Hope everyone's had a good day. Not been playing Snooker for long, started January this year and my cueing has improved massively since. One key shot I'm having trouble with is the deep screw - on shots where I need to screw the ball back some distance, I find myself "hitting" the ball rather than timing it, which often causes a miscue and the cue ball jumps. On softer screw shots, my I accelerate the cue nicely through the cue ball and have no trouble at all bringing it back, but when I try for a deep screw I find myself snatching at the cue and almost punching the cue ball rather than accelerating through.

My question is, are there any exercises I can do to improve my timing on the deeper screw shots? I've tried practising over and over but I end up getting frustrated which makes things worse. If there are any structured methods which gradually improve this issue, that would be great.

Thanks for your help.

Best Regards,
Ben.

How on earth to be consistent

In practice or in match play I can have flurries of excellent play (for me) then it's gone by the same mysterious way it came. How to capture it, retain it? That's the great mystery for me.. I've tried everything, pre-shot routines, mantras etc which work for a couple of minutes, then vanish along with the passages of good play. One thing I do know is that when I'm playing well the 'why' thoughts never enter my head - it just flows. But I can't summon that up at will. How to think the unthinking excellence? That's the great unanswered question.
How on earth to be consistent

Johnathan Lonergan cue review

I bought a cue from Johnathan Lonergan and am very happy with it so I thought I'd write a review. I was asking for something specific, with a high balance point and it's worked out very well. It's a beauty of a cue, the snakewood looks great with the maple veneers. It plays very well too. I cut it down from 57.5 inches to 55 inches. It's 17.9oz with a 9.4mm tip. I'll add pics, but just working out again how to do that.

What's the difference in money?

Hi all

I'm a snooker player from Belgium, thinking about buying a new cue. I know already which specs I want the cue to have. With different cue sellers available, such as greenbaize, adr147... I'll probably won't wait for having one custom made direct from the maker (waiting lists are pretty big).

What I find interesting is the difference in price between cues made in Thailand (Ton Praram, Maximus...) and in the UK (Trevor White, Exquisite...). I'm pretty experienced and I can't really spot any differences in quality. I don't have the luxery to try cues out in shops, so judging cues on the looks of their grains, specs, is the only way for me to pick a new cue.

At the moment I'm doubting between: Exquisite (green plate, very nice grains, gbp 550), Trevor White (gbp 650) and a Ton Praram ('beyond' with snakewood gbp 425). They al look like quality cues and the specs are very much the same. So my gut feeling tells me to pick the cheapest.

What are your thoughts on this?

Cheers!

Wright Cues

Hello, Reg Here
Apologies on my behalf as last night whilst at our snooker match i was having a conversation with the guys about cues "as you do" one of the players said that i should come on the snooker forum more often and promote my cues as he said that people on here have said that my workmanship is top notch but people don't seem to mention me on here as much as they should. I have to say he's right in a way but as i said to him its more as a time issue more than not wanting to come on here. As i'm sure people will understand that i'm a small company that i run on my own. Example i often put cues on Facebook and people do constantly private messenger me or ask questions regarding the cue spec and cost. "so" i can be on my phone 24/7 and it does become a bit of a headache when its like 2200 hours at night and day plus the other half sticks the elbow in lol. Don't get me wrong i'm not complaining its just that i cant be everywhere at once. This year has been quite full on due to closing for a year last year what with building a new workshop and shopfront to my premises. whilst on the subject of promoting i have brought out a new range, "Ye Olde Ash/Maple Cues" also i will be as of 2017 if not sooner selling cases too. These will be handmade by myself, FULL real leather and once they are done they will be on my website, i'll also notify you on here too. So as you can see lots of things going on and not enough hours in the day.

I would like to say its always a pleasure to read the comments of the threads on here, there are some very interesting points of views.
Please do keep looking at Wright Cues website "http://ift.tt/2dnsjIc; and add Wright Cues to your friends on Facebook.

Till next time keep your elbow high, focus and stroke them in.:snooker:

Natural cueing

How many of you use chin/chest contacts because you either have seen the pro players on TV, watched better players or maybe took a coaching session?
As much as 4 point contact helps and I personally love it, perhaps it can also hide some problems with cue alignment.

Just for fun I tried some 2 point contact cueing with head above the cue which I like to call "natural" and indeed it looks like I have become perhaps a bit too dependent on 4 point contact.
Despite my efforts to bring chest to the cue and not the other way around, I feel like I adjust a bit too much sometimes while down on shot.

Ideally a player should be able to cue fully straight with just two contact points and only then add 4 points to get that extra confidence and stability. Right?
What if somebody told top professionals that from now on 4 point contact is not allowed? :) How far do you think their standard would drop? I won't name any names but some of them look to me like they could not play top level stuff with just 2 points of contact. Thoughts?

Being a professional is easier than landscape gardening

BILLY Castle returned to the snooker tables on which he learnt his craft as a junior to take a step closer to his dream of becoming a professional.

The 24-year-old moved up to second place in the Cuestars South of England Championship Tour rankings after winning the second leg at Chandler's Ford Snooker Club.

A Q School place and the chance of earning a two-year tour card is on offer to the rankings winner at the end of the eight-leg campaign.

Castle pocketed £200 prize money after accounting for event-one winner Seb Worrall (Swindon) 3-0 in the final that lasted just 38 minutes.

“I believe I can be a professional,” insisted Southampton’s former Town Champion. “If I didn’t believe, I wouldn’t go to Q School.

“I’ve got the attacking game, not to his heights but very similar to how Judd (Trump) plays.

“Luckily for me, I’ve got a great wife who helps me out and supports me. I’d love to do it. Ever since I started playing snooker, my ambition has been to become a pro. Hopefully I can make that step this year.”

A massive entry of 39 top amateurs from across the south recorded 38 breaks of more than 50 during the Ahmad Tea-sponsored event.

Castle’s first visit of the day yielded a run of 112 against Anthony Rice (Fordingbridge) but that was swiftly followed by his Churchills teammate Mike Finn (Eastleigh) firing in a 128 against Emin Thorose (High Wycombe).

“I knew if I was in that sort of form I’d be there or thereabouts,” said Castle, who dropped only one of his 20.frames and chalked up another nine half-century breaks.

He made 96 and 76 in a 3-1 last-eight victory over two-time rankings champion Matt Ford (Bracknell) and 81 and 63 in a 3-0 semi-final success over Mike Talmondt (Portsmouth).

Elsewhere, on his first Cuestars outing of the season, Labeeb Ahmed (Chessington) won his group, beat Richard Clark (Swindon) 2-0 in the last-16 and edged Christian Chislett (Basingstoke) 3-2 on the final black before going out 3-0 to Worrall.

Bradley Cowdroy (Bournemouth) was the best performing junior. The 14-year-old won his round-robin group, beat Rice 2-0 in the first knockout round and lost 3-0 to Worrall.

Mickey Joyce, a 13-year-old from Basingstoke, went out 2-0 to Talmondt in the last-16.

And ten-year-old home player Oliver Sykes earnt rave reviews after missing a doubled pink to beat ex-professional Talmondt before losing 2-1 on the final black in the group stages.

Originally from Marchwood, Castle is a three-time winner of the Saturday morning Under-18 League at Chandler’s Ford SC. Now based at The Crucible Sports & Social Club, Newbury, he lives in Reading with wife Betsie and children Kacie-Mai, who was born in August, and 19-month-old Billy-James.

Talking about his dream of turning professional, Castle, who is sponsored by J King Roofing and Property Maintenance, said: “It’s just to make a better life for them. It’s something I love doing and it’s a lot easier than landscape gardening!”

The third leg of eight, sponsored by Sanders Snooker and Pool Table Services, is at Top Spot Snooker Club, Havant, on Sunday, November 13.

MDF Snooker Lockers

I saw a bank of 10 mdf lockers recently on the internet somewhere and haven't the faintest where it was. They were £120 and you would finish them (paint) yourselves.

Has anyone else seen them? It was more the price as this was good money. I understand there are others out there but the clubs obviously on a budget.

I've been contemplating whether to buy a new cue to be used for pool but would you say it's possible to play a decent standard of pool with a cue that is more snooker specs for example a 9.5mm tip.

Fake John Pariss????

I was given a Pariss regal cue by a friend of mine at no cost, I'm not sure if it is a genuine one because its not in a very good condition. There are cracks above the joints and it's got a shiny substance on it which causes a lot of friction when I try to cue, on my very sweaty hands....which is not a very good combination at all. I feel like I have to wash my hands and clean the cue after every few shots. Can anyone help me to identify if this is a genuine John Pariss? I can email you the pictures or if someone can tell me how to upload them on here.

MW Supertip issue

Hi Guys,

I have been using mikes supertips for years now and had always thought they were a great tip, the original were fantastic ( for me anyway)

Then we have the green tip issue but that was quickly resolved by Mike at no cost.

I am now using the latest batch and I am finding them a lot harder than previous versions and that they go very hard and shiny quickly and give an awful ball contact sound upon striking. I thought perhaps it was a bad tip but i have now changed 3 times and each has gone the same and doesn't hold chalk as well as previous versions.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue at all?

It is affecting my play so much I have gone to Elk now which is just a lottery lol

I have some pool barons here but not sure if they will be rock hard too.
Im a pressed tip man not laminated

thanks in advance

Originally an old cue that has had lots of money spent on it, being lengthened with 4 ebony splices over maple veneers and looks like even the main splices are brand new, all work done by Robin Cook, has the large spirolok butt joint.

A mockery of the Parris ultimate waiting times!!!

Just come across this rather interesting tweet.

https://twitter.com/MattSelt/status/778622193131515904

So, a pro can order 2 Parris Ultimate cues in September and have them ready to use by Christmas? I'd love to hear what magic wand Mr Parris uses to be able to make cues so quickly, yet people like myself are waiting since September 2012, with no sign of it going into production!

No doubt Judd Trump waited merely weeks for his, and I know that Liang Wenbo placed an order earlier this year and is now using his cue. Its about time someone held him to account for this.

Hello..from New Zealand

Hello peoples,

Registered for this forum a few months ago while I was on my cue hunting quest and found some very very useful Information here. Since I stole so much of u people's knowledge, thought it would only be polite to introduce myself.

My name is Johnny, originally from Malaysia but somehow ended up in NewZealand years ago. Anyways, I have been playing American 8/9 ball for 6-7 years and I started playing snooker this year. I've always felt more of a connection to snooker even before I started playing, but nobody at my club...or hardly anyone in the country plays it so I didn't give it much of a thought. But at the start of this year I decided to have a game of snooker and after my first successful pot (which took about 30min.....==) I was in love with the game....quit American pool since then.

My first snooker cue will be arriving next week...it will most probably not be "The one", but hopefully it will get me ready until the day The One turns up........
god..I need a life @@................................................ ..........,,,oh wait ..who cares, I've got SNOOKER!!!

Hi all,

Just wanted to recommend Brian Cox as a coach, I have had a few lessons with him now and the results have been amazing, my cue action is much more under control and the mental side of my game is improving too.

Great coach and really nice guy, I'd highly recommend. I know he coaches all over the UK, not 100% what areas but it's definitely worth contacting him to see if he covers your area.

Master cues.......

Hi, I am new to this forum, just order a master cue, ronnie's model online, hasn't arrived yet, this will also be my 1st cue.
Just wondering if any here who owns or owned a mastercue has any thoughts on the playability, quality of these cues?

Shot Line vs Aiming Line

First off, I apologize if this has been discussed. I know there's plenty of topics on aiming, but I couldn't find one for my specific question.

I've heard people say shot line and aiming line. Are these two terms synonymous with one another, or are they different? If it's the latter, then what is the specific difference and how is each one used when setting up the stance? Any videos or diagrams would be great.

I know this is really basic stuff, but it's just something I never actually took the time to learn. I started off playing by feel. Went to using various aiming systems. Felt like I was wasting my time, and went back to playing by feel and using contact point on the object ball.

2 Free Ball Questions

1. If your opponent misses all the reds off the break off shot and leaves the white in a position to still be able to hit the reds is this a free ball as you wouldn't be able to hit both sides of any red because they are still in a triangle.

2. If your opponent makes a foul with 1 red left on the table and this 1 red is touching the cushion so you are only able to hit 1 side of it is this a free ball?

Free Ball Confusion!

I played a game last night and was left in a scenario where my opponent had completely missed hitting a red giving me 4 points and left me with a free ball. The black was over the corner pocket but the pink was directly in front of the black. Could I have nominated the pink as my free ball and hit it onto the black to pot the black or not? I chose not to do this as I was unsure on this particular rule.

Spectacles

Hi folks,

I currently wear contact lenses when I play snooker as I find it difficult to play wearing my everyday varifocals.

The contact lenses that I use are 'Daily Disposables' and can sometimes feel a little uncomfortable. I am therefore considering getting myself a pair of 'Dennis Taylor' type glasses. I notice that there are a number of on-line outlets that supply these and, I am wondering if any members have used any of them and what are their experiences and are there any particular recommendations.

Many thanks.

Video/Kitchen Table

Hey guys

Here's a short video of me practicing the walk-in and stroke on my kitchen table. I know it's not the same as seeing me on an actual table, but hopefully it's enough to receive some critique. This is the way I've been playing lately, and the approach is helpful with keeping my head on the line. Before I continue with it, I just wanted to make sure there weren't any major flaws.

How old is your cue really?

I was trying to answer a question the other day when someone asked me how old a Horace Lindrum cue was that I was trying out.

It wasn't the age of the cue that really interested me but I wondered how old the wood would be prior to making the cue.

I wondered what the average age of a piece of wood would be that is taken from the heart of a tree (heartwood) prior to making the cue.

It just interested me to wonder what the total age of a cue would be as we don;t normally think in those terms.

My father has a cue that was old when it was given to him when he was 7 (I think) and he is 78 in a few weeks and still pretty straight. It would be interesting how old the wood is.

Just a thought!

JP Mannock

I was playing billiards last night and one of the old boys had a Mannock, I spied it straight away so asked him about it, he handed it to me and I had a look, very slim butt, looked like snakewood and another wood that had been lighter but darkened with age so it was hard to tell, both on top of machine spliced ebony i think, the thing I was wondering about was although the shaft had darkened with age, it looked to have a pinky hue to it so I asked him if it was pear ? He insisted it was maple but there was just something about it that just didn't feel or look like maple to me, is he right?
Lovely balanced cue though felt really nice across the bridge hand( I only got a few practice swings I didn't get to hit any balls with it unfortunately).

Salisbury U21 results

NATIONAL under-18 snooker champion Mark Lloyd made it two wins out of two on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour.

The 16-year-old from Gosport edged first-time finalist Steven Hughes 2-0 to collect £100 prize money in the Attic Life-sponsored event at Salisbury Snooker Club.

Wearing a fetching purple glove on his bridge hand to combat the sticky conditions, Lloyd took the first frame on the brown and the second on the pink.

Earlier, he qualified in second place from his round-robin group - after losing to 13-year-old Mickey Joyce (Basingstoke) - and beat Ronnie Blake (London) 2-1 and Anthony Rice (Fordingbridge) 2-0 in the knockout.

“I started off OK and then it went bad and then it picked up,” said Lloyd, who is based at Stoke Snooker Club in his home town and is studying business at Fareham College. “But I’ve been there many times before.

“I’ve been going through a little bit of a bad patch but you’ve just got to battle your way through.”

Hughes, now second in the rankings, notched up his first half-century break in his opening group-stage match against Mike Trigg (East Wellow).

The 15-year-old from Chandler’s Ford compiled a 62 and then capped a memorable day by pocketing £42.50 for reaching his first Gold Tour final in his debut season since gaining promotion from Silver.

Sponsored by Vankru Cycling, the teenager topped his group, saw off Bradley Cowdroy (Bournemouth) 2-1 on the final black and overcame Londoner Adam Stacey 2-0 in the semi-finals.

Rice recorded the day’s highest break of 66 in the group stages.

The third leg of ten, sponsored by Tamar Independent Financial Advisers, is at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon, on Sunday, October 30.

BREAKS

Anthony Rice: 66, 40, 40, 40.

Ryan in seventh heaven

HE’S just a winning machine.

A Chandler’s Ford teenager has made it a staggering seven snooker tournament wins in ten outings on a regional circuit.

Ryan Hughes followed up his success in the opening leg of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour in Woking last month with victory in the second at Salisbury Snooker Club.

The 14-year-old defeated Evan Plummer 2-0 in the final of the Attic Life-sponsored event.

“Evan didn’t play his best but I think I just played really well throughout the game,” he said.

It was Hughes’ fifth straight Cuestars tournament victory. He wrapped up last season’s Bronze title by winning the final two legs and followed that by clinching the double in the championship play-off on finals day in Swindon.

But he struggled to explain where this phenomenal run of form has come from.

“I don’t really know,” he said. “I always seem to play better in competitions. I don’t know what it is.”

First-time finalist Plummer recorded a personal best competitive high break of 68 in his 2-1 last-four victory over home player Keegan Reed.

The 13-year-old from Coulsdon, south London, earlier topped his round-robin group and overcame Charlie Pringle (Chandler’s Ford) 2-0 in the first knockout round.

David O’Callaghan (Bournemouth), a semi-final casualty for the second leg running, and Pringle are joint second in the rankings, 20 points adrift of Hughes. Harry Jones (Coulsdon) is three points further back in fourth.

The third leg of ten, sponsored by Tamar Independent Financial Advisers, is at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon, on Sunday, October 30.

BREAKS

Evan Plummer: 68(PB), 37.

White: “I wanted it so bad.”

HAVANT teenager Callum White held his nerve under enormous pressure to sink a re-spotted black and claim a first tournament win on a junior snooker circuit.

The 16-year-old edged leg-one winner Shane Kearns 2-1 in the final of the second event on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour.

“I wanted it so bad,” declared White, a runner-up twice before.

After taking the first frame on the black in the Attic Life-sponsored event at Salisbury Snooker Club, he was out-gunned in the next by his opponent from Swindon.

White then overhauled Kearns’ lead in the decider but the rankings leader potted the black to tie the frame and force a re-spot.

Following a tense safety exchange, the left-hander made no mistake when left with a virtually straight two-foot pot into the green pocket.

“It did go right in the middle,” said White. “It was nice to win and hopefully I can get another one.

“The final could have gone either way. In the second frame, he destroyed me.”

White - who is based at Copnor SC, Portsmouth, and has started a painting and decorating course at Highbury College - topped his round-robin group and defeated Riley Ellis (Wootton Bassett) 2-0 in the last-four.

Kearns had beaten Essex lad Thomas Saunders 2-1 in the second semi. Saunders, in his debut season, is fourth in the rankings. White climbed to second and Ellis dropped one place to third.

The third leg of ten, sponsored by Tamar Independent Financial Advisers, is at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon, on Sunday, October 30.

BREAKS

Riley Ellis: 27, 21.
Shane Kearns: 25.
Will Forster: 22, 20.
Chloe White: 22.

Snooker Rule

I was asked about a rule the other day and it certainly caught me out.

If a referee places a colour back on the wrong spot and then notices after a few shots have taken place I thought the colour should then remain in the wrong position.

I was thought that it should go back to the correct position but this may not be possible after a few shots?

Your thoughts?

Bin the Bottom 64....................

.........if they've not been in the top 64 for fiver years? I'm pretty anti-Hearn on most things but his old general idea of binning the repeat also rans does seem attractive. Just 12 cards are available at Q school. Binning more of the bottom sixty four, say a tenth extra of them every year, would double the amount of tour cards available to Q school, bringing through young talent that is stuck in a bottle neck.

You for it?

Back in the club

Hi All,

Started playing snooker again at the start of this year after over 20 yrs not playing, was made redundant which gave me the time to practice and get back most of what I had.
Back in work now which could have caused me to drop things again but luckily a friend got me into a local League playing matches on Monday nights. Really enjoying it again!
I wanted a new cue, as never really had a decent one so joined the forum looked a loads of threads and found ADR147, who has lots of top quality cues.

UK TV company looking for examples of Hyatt celluloid and ivory billiard balls in NYC

Hello everybody,

I wondered if any knowledgeable forum members might be able to help me. I work for a TV company based in the UK and we are travelling to NYC to carry out some filming for a documentary series. We plan to tell the story of the invention of celluloid as an ivory substitute.

I am looking for some original celluloid billiard balls (manufactured by Albany Billiard Ball Company and invented by John Wesley Hyatt) to use as a prop for filming. I am also looking for an ivory billiard ball for comparison.

Can anyone suggest where I could borrow these items in the NYC area? The early celluloid composite versions appear to be quite rare and of course the ivory versions are even more difficult to find. If anyone has any contacts or suggestions I would be very grateful.

Thank you in advance.

Looking to recover my pool table soon. But I want it as close to IPA/EBA events as possible.

Are these the premium cloths available? Anyone found any cheaper alternatives that play just as fast.

2016 International Championship

The third biggest tournament (at least if you look at prize money and ranking points) had already surprises in the qualification. Both Barry Hawkins and Mark Allen failed to make the main draw.
Hawkins lost 4-6 to Lee Walker, while Allen started a good comeback from 1-5 down against Daniel Wells before losing 5-6 ultimately.
Also Neil Robertson survived with a scare. He was already 3-5 down against Sam Craigie, before winning 3 in a row to qualify.
