Help needed: Which cuemaker made this cue?

Hi everyone,

I bought an old cue recently and cannot identify the cuemaker. As the previous owner has passed away I hope that some of the experts here have a clue who built this cue.
It is definitely handspliced and has no joint at the butt end to put extensions on. But it does have an telescopic extensions that can be screwed on the 3/4 shaft.
There are three sticker each with the number 001793 at the butt, at the 3/4 shaft and at the extension.

Time for a new cue, opinions required

Evening all.

I primarily play 8 ball pool (uk) but often hit the snooker table in order to practise more. I've been playing a few years now and I'm pretty decent at both. This Christmas I've decided to get a new cue. The budget is 100-150 pounds.
I've seen woods, dunns, master pop up.

My question is that with the budget I have which cue maker would you go with? Doesn't have to be in that list.

Thanks.

Fastest and most durable snooker cloth?

Looking for some new cloth for my table. Currently have the Strachan 6811 tournament 30 oz but am pretty disappointed with how slow it is to be honest. Even after ironing it doesnt get much faster. I see that Number. 10 and 6811 tournament are both sold as 931g/m(30oz/yd). Is the cloths speed determined by the weight? Would that mean that No.10 and 6811 are pretty much the same? Does anyone know of some really fast and durable cloth as an alternative, advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Concessions - just a thought

I know that a player can only offer his concession, his opponent doesn't have to accept it. Say if someone messes up a shot and starts pulling reds out of the pockets, but you don't accept his concession, do the reds stay where they are, or does the ref have to put the table back the way it was? Also if he takes his cue and rakes the balls across the table, what happens then? Or if you don't accept his concession, then you miss and he won't play his next shot, is that the match?

Escape to the Country - Awesome billiard table.

I've literally accidentally caught an episode of Escape to the Country (which I think originally aired in 2009) and the guests were being shown round pretty much a manor house. One of the rooms was a billiard room with an absolutely wonderful looking table, apparently original from 1850 - with under slate heating built in AND electronic scoring via buttons built into the rails, attached to a scoring system on the wall.
I can't find any information on the internet about it; does anyone know what I'm talking about, and better yet does anyone have an information/history on such a table? I'm absolutely intrigued!

I can't remember much about it as it was only in shot briefly, but other than the buttons built into the rails, distinguishing features included pockets that stood really proud out the side of the rails (probably about an inch or so on the middle pockets) and the heating pipework underneath was big, several pipes that could have easily been 2 - 3" diameter.

Laminated tips.

I've tried several tips over the last few months (ADR147 SS, Elk Pro Medium, Black Heart, etc.). I like the way the elk pros play for the first few hours then after that they become insanely hard and have absolutely no feel to them. I decided I would, therefore, make the swap to laminated tips as I can't seem to get a good elk for the life of me at the moment. I've tried ADR147 SS tips, but they don't want to bed in at all like I can wipe my finger across the tip, and all the chalk will come off leaving a shiny surface behind. I then tried black heart tips and had two delaminate in a week.

So I'm now looking for a laminated tip that will bed in and hold chalk and play well, my thoughts have been the TSF tips/Talisman/Kamui, and I was wondering if anyone has any feedback on them before I purchase another set of tips.

Advice - Shaping my first layered tip

This is my first post so go easy on me. I've also tried using the search function to answer my question but to no real joy.

I've recently fitted a Talisman Pro Soft to my cue and was wondering how other people go about shaping these things?

Is it recommended to just shape it at the size (height) the tip arrives, or do you recommend i sand it down a little bit like i would with a solid leather tip?

Is there anything i need to be concerned with in regards to the layers and laminate that i haven't needed to be concerned with with SL tips? Like should the laminate circle of the layer below be towards the outer edge of the tip?

Thanks in advance

Aiming question: 3/4, 1/2 ball etc etc

Hi there. Just back from the club tonite and the usual result - some good some dross. My question for you all is as follows...

When presented with a pot, do you identify it as a halfball, quarterball or three quarterball pot and play it as such (i.e. For halfball aim to the edge of the OB) or do you purely 'eyeball' it and guage the angle as you see it on the table?

I do the eyeball technique with mixed results, especially if anything more than a three quarter ball. Good to hear what others think and if i should alter my aiming technique at all.

Thanks

Cue Deflection / Food for thought finding when trying to find the right cue

I was asked to post my reply to an email on here to see what other players feel about my comments !!

I've had an email this morning asking about a shafts stiffness and playability, in the reply I ended up going into a bit of detail about deflection !!
I believe deflection is probably one of the most important factors to why players can or can't get on with a cue.
When players are looking for new cues they generally have an idea to design, size and weight of the cue they want but deflection is never mentioned ?
Stiffness of shaft is brought up by some players but that doesn't always give a true indication to how the cue will play.
Players with knowledge about cues will have learned that a cue with a stiff shaft will create less deflection, or that is what they are to believe, the fact is this is very inconsistent !
There are players using stiff shaft cues that have a good amount of throw / deflection, and players using cues with a lot of flex in the shaft that producing very little throw / push / deflection.

There are countless players looking for new cues every day, looking for the perfect cue, for players who want the right cue for them to play with it's important that they read this post !

It comes down to a combination of experience & expectation
Less experience less expectation
More experience more expectation.
Able to adapt / compensate, some players do this well some don't.

We do deflection test on cues day in day out in the shop, this is to help give an indication of how the cue plays.

Here is how we do it, test your cues deflection to see how much throw / push / deflection your cue produces, you might be surprised !!

This was what I wrote to the gentleman this morning.......

It's hard for me to say/ give advice to which will be best for you, it's personal preference.
What you are used to / know I can't say.

You can check your current cue to see how much deflection your cue is producing by placing the cue ball on the brown spot, aim your cue to play directly down the line of the spots over the black spot, now move your cue to either the left or right of centre ( which side you are most comfortable with ) to add side spin, now move your cue over to the side of the cue ball making sure you keep your cue parallel to the line of spots, so you should be aiming your cue just a little to the left or right of the black spot depending which side you've chosen keeping your cue parallel to the spots, ( I hope this makes sense ) Make sure you cue straight through the cue ball keeping your cue on the line of shot - finishing delivered tip towards the side of the black spot you've been addressing.
What will happen next is the cue ball will travel down the table towards the black spot, watch carefully to see how the cue ball travels down, also where the cue ball goes when it gets to the black spot, this will give you an indication to how much your cue is deflecting when using side.
Repeat this a few times to check consistency.
Things to make sure you keep the same, the height / position you strike through the cue ball, ensure you do the same amount of off centre striking, height is very important as well as when striking below centre you create drag which lessens the deflection, striking above centre will create slightly more deflection, so try and keep central height.

After doing this you will have had the chance to see how your cue is reacting using side and the deflection being created, this is one of the main reasons that players can or can't get on with new cues, players with experience have an expectation to how they expect a cue to play when using side or shots at distance.

If you've been using a cue with a lot of deflection it's very difficult to use, players do get used to them over time and learn to compensate.
A cue with little deflection is easier to use and get used to, most cues will naturally create deflection, about half a cue ball ( the edge of the cue ball will go over the black spot ) when doing the deflection test correctly.
Less than half a cue ball is good, very few cues produce no deflection.

2 Free Ball Questions

1. If there is only the pink & black left on the table & the pink is over the pocket & your opponent completely misses the pink and gives a foul 6 leaving the pink over the pocket & snookering behind the black (giving a free ball), could you nominate the black as the free ball & hit the black onto the pink & pot the pink to gain 6 points?

2. Also what happens if you pot both the pink & black in the same shot (I.E. pink over the pocket, hit black onto pink, the pink goes in & the black also follows the pink in)

5 reasons for Ford to celebrate

BERKSHIRE cueman Matt Ford was celebrating on five fronts after his success on a regional snooker circuit.

• First tournament win after finishing runner-up in the previous two legs.

• Top of the rankings.

• First ever victory over former champion John Hunter.

• Highest break of the day.

• Only a 20-minute drive home from a wet and windy Woking.

The 41-year-old from Martins Heron, Bracknell, ended a “tough day” by winning the third leg of the Cuestars South of England Seniors (40+) Tour.

And he produced the highest break of the tournament in the last frame on the match table at Woking Snooker Centre.

Beaten in the finals of the previous two legs, by John Hunter in Bournemouth and Mike Talmondt in Fareham, it was third time lucky as Ford overcame Martin Wallace 2-0 to claim the £100 prize money.

Left-hander Wallace (Wokingham), appearing in his first final since February, 2013, led into the colours in the opening frame but Ford cleared yellow to pink to snatch the lead.

The new rankings leader, with his silky smooth cue action and attacking style, eventually grabbed the second frame by the scruff of the neck.

After failing to make an impact with his first chance, he embarked on a run of 87 that ended with a missed blue with the rest.

The break surpassed the day’s previous highest of 80 made by High Wycombe’s Nick Birney in a 2-1 group-stage victory over Ray Mears (Aldershot).

“It was a tough day,” said Ford. “I’ve battled well but haven’t played well. And it’s only a 20-minute drive home, so that’s a bonus.”

Talking about Wallace, he added: “Martin’s consistent. He’s (usually) in the quarters or semis. He’s a dangerous opponent.”

Earlier, in the group of death that included former champion Hunter, former joint champion Wayne Muddiman and defending champion Talmondt, Ford recorded his first ever victory over Hunter (“although it wasn’t pretty”).

Muddiman (Southampton) can consider himself a tad unlucky after winning three of his four matches in that group - and finishing third.

As only the best three of the five group runners-up could qualify for the knockout, a tense best-of-three black-ball play-off - enjoyed immensely by those not involved - was needed to separate three players who had the same frames difference. Neil Carroll (Southampton) and John Monckton (Woking) progressed at the expense of Mark Tillison (Waterlooville).

Monckton was knocked out 2-0 in the last-four by Wallace while Ford saw off Talmondt by the same score in the second semi.

Ford leads ex-professional Talmondt (Portsmouth) by nine points. Group-stage casualty Hunter (Andover) drops to third, two points ahead of Wallace.

The fourth leg of seven is at Cue T’s, Marchwood, on Sunday, December 18. The top-20 ranked players at the end of the series will play off for £500 prize money in Newbury on April 23.

5 reasons for Ford to celebrate

2016 UK Championship

It's time for the second biggest tournament of the year.

Here's the draw:
http://ift.tt/2gd8Jgz

All the big names are on the start again this week. So the favorites should probably be Mark Selby, John Higgins, Judd Trump, Ding Junhui and Ronnie O'Sullivan. But the first four rounds are all "just" Best-of-11, so there is plenty of room for upsets.

In the first section defending champion Neil Robertson should be the favorite, but his recent level of play is pretty inconsistent. But the same is true for the two other most prominent names here with Mark Williams and Ricky Walden. But maybe Thepchaiya Un-Nooh can use this advantage and get into the quarterfinals?

In the second section Ronnie, who once again - also when you take section 1 into account - has one of the easier draws, is the clear favorite. Joe Perry is also here as is the ever inconsistent Michael White.

In section three Ding Junhui should overcome his two first matches (against Igor Figueiredo and the winner of Joe Swail/Ross Muir) before he could have a rematch of this years World Championship semifinal against Alan McManus. If the Scotsman makes it that far, which is quite uncertain this year. A big threat for Ding could be Ali Carter. Also David Gilbert is in this section.

Section four belongs to Judd Trump. The next highest seeds here are Marco Fu and Martin Gould, both which are playing a quite poorly season so far.

The bottom half seems to be a little more interesting, though again thanks to a draw of 128 names we shouldn't expect many great match-ups in the earlier rounds.

Section 5 could bring us a 3rd-round-match between World Number 2 Stuart Bingham and freshly World Ranking Event Winner Mark King though. King would have to beat probably Luca Brecel in round two before though. And in the other half of this section are Barry Hawkins and Stephen Maguire. Or maybe the supertalented Zhao Xintong maybe gets his first breakthrough?

Also section 6 has some kind of interest for me. We could have 2nd round matches between Liang Wenbo and 16-year old Yan Bingtao as well as Zhou Yuelong against Michael Holt. And the winner of these matches play each other. In the second half of this draw is Shaun Murphy with probably Dominic Dale as the biggest hindrance to reach round four.

In section 7 John Higgins is the big favorite. Biggest threat here is Mark Allen, who could ahve to beat Anthony Hamilton and Ryan Day before.

Finally we have the world champion in the last part of the draw. Mark Selby could meet Tom Ford or Robert Milkins in round three and probably one of the youngsters Kyren Wilson or Anthony McGill in the fourth round.

My guess at the quarter-finals:
Tchepchaiya Un-Nooh - Ronnie O'Sullivan
Ali Carter - Judd Trump
Stuart Bingham - Dominic Dale
John Higgins - Mark Selby

I tried to call a few surprises, but as always with this, as the definition of the word already implicates I'm pretty sure there will some, but probably none of these I called.

All sensible offers will be considered. I paid £290 originally and it's been kept well in its case. The only slight problem is a tiny nick in the shaft which is easily repaired.

Question About Weight Balance Of Cue

I have a 3/4 Snooker Craft Ace Cue which is not far off 19oz, the top half of the cue is very light and all the weight is in the bottom half of the cue that you screw onto the top half. Is this a good thing or a bad thing and what pros and cons are there with this kind of cue where the majority of the weight is at the bottom half of the cue? Any info or advice would be much appreciated.

Picking table for 5,2 x 4,2 meter room

Hello, i have a 5,2mx4,2m room and i am trying to figure out what table to buy. I have 2 questions and i am sorry if they offend some hardcore fans, please know that i have limited options and no experience and want to play snooker with family and friends :)

1. Is it possible to play snooker on a billiards table / do you recommend it ? (i read the snooker balls are a bit smaller, as well as the holes)
2. What size table would you recommend ? (also a billiards or snooker one ? - i read the 7 foot snooker one or 8 foot billiard table should be OK based on this site https://www.snookerandpooltablecompa...ize-guide.html , is this true ?
3. Anything else i should take into consideration ?

Thanks for you help.

Buy full size or 10ft?

I've got a double garage that it 20ft 6in x 14ft 2in, I really want a full size table but I've read everywhere that you need a minimum of 22 x 16ft to play with a normal cue, however I came across a website showing minimum room sizes using different length cues, and I think I could get one in using a 48in cue for shots near the cushion.

What's the best thing to do, get a full size table and compromise on shots near the cushion or settle for 2nd best and get a 10ft table? I read on here somewhere that the difference in playing surface area between the 2 sizes of table is quite massive so really not sure what to go for.

It's such a shame I'm just a couple of feet out with the double garage, I'm tempted to demolish and look into getting a garden room big enough but would cost a fortune!

Thanks for any replies!

Gary Taylor aka Cue Doctor

Is he still operating? My friend picked up a 3/4 handmade cue with round badge at a boot sale STUPID cheap and tbh it hits an absolute dream. It reminds me of a Parris - splice points are far enough out that you could drive a car through the gap ..... But it hits a million dollars!

Does he still make cues and if so where does he sell them? His website domain is now not in use and the Facebook page is pointless. I know every cue hits differently but the taper, etc etc is perfect for my tastes. I could go to another maker and say copy it but I'd rather give the original person the chance 1st.

£2,300 sponsorship for 14-year-old

A PERSONAL letter from a 14-year-old snooker player from Eastleigh has tugged at the purse strings of two more Hampshire businesses.

Century breaker Connor Benzey, already helped financially by Pitman Training Winchester, has now been backed to the tune of £1,300 by Hillcrest Structural and £1,000 by GH Property Management.

In a bid to compete on the national under-21 circuit, the teenager wrote to local firms and included cuttings from the Southern Daily Echo.

“I couldn’t really believe it,” said the Cuestars Gold Tour player. “Thanks to all three. It’s really going to help me over the next year.”

This year, Benzey has increased his high break in competition to 102 and won the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour. Last month, he won his first tournament on the EASB Regional Junior Tour – South West, which is a feeder for England’s Premier Junior Tour.

Both managing directors where impressed with the young potter’s letter.

Jamie Green, from Hillcrest Structural, said: “I liked Connor’s approach, that he wrote a letter himself. His portfolio was incredible.”

And Liam O’Sullivan, from GH Property Management, who plays snooker “very badly”, said: “We were very impressed with it.

“Although we get people asking for work, we don’t get very many people asking for sponsorship. We certainly don’t get letters like that with supporting photographs and evidence like that.”

Hillcrest Structural is based in North Baddesley but operates nationwide. A specialist in structural steelworks, among its well-known buildings in Southampton are SeaCity Museum, the new police headquarters and the Carnival UK headquarters. For more information, go to http://ift.tt/2fpxFzI.

GH Property Management services and maintains blocks of flats, mainly in the Southampton and Winchester areas, from its headquarters in Fair Oak. For more information, go to http://ift.tt/2ePcSJH.

Anyone in New Zealand? Help buying please!

Hello,

Does anyone on here live in New Zealand and can point me in the right direction to purchase my next cue? :)

I've had my BCE Jimmy White Signature Series 3/4 ash cue - don't laugh! - for 16 years now, and feel it's now time for a change/higher quality cue...

Having moved back to Christchurch NZ last year, it seems snooker shops are few and far between on the South Island! The only snooker shop in Christchurch is charging the equivalent of £340 for a Cuecraft Royal Standard! Don't these retail for £180 in the UK?

Ideally, I want a Cuecraft or similar quality/priced cue - whichever you can recommend - 3/4, ash, open to options up to £200...

I'd be open to buying from a reputable member off here and shipping from the UK, but I do feel uneasy about shipping distance and the potential risk of damage(?)

Your thoughts/advice is greatly appreciated :)

Thanks

Help! Moving a table?

The coming weekend, Simon Barker, from Sheffield, is coming over to our club in Strasbourg, France, to install a brand new silver-legged Riley Aristocrat table. Needless to say we're pretty excited about it! :)

However, we need to make room for this beauty, meaning we need to move our top table, a Matchroom, from its current position to 1,5-2m. We can't dismantle it, we just want to 'push it' to make room...now, the main question that arises is....how? Have you guys already done that type of job? What is the best way to proceed?
We have small plates of wood on wheels that we use to move pool or 9-ball tables but for these, it is easier. For a snooker table though, I'm afraid their height wil be too much to play with.

Any ideas?
Help! Moving a table?

Winbourne’s first Cuestars tournament win for five years

IT WAS just over five years ago that Jordan Winbourne last tasted success at a Cuestars event.

Although the 20-year-old from Southampton picked up a stack of winner’s trophies when he used to compete on the Under-21 Gold Tour, he had never before triumphed on the Championship Tour.

But that run came to an end on resident professional Jason Weston’s Star table in the third leg sponsored by Trevor Sanders Snooker and Pool Table Services at Top Spot Snooker Club, Havant.

Reflecting on the day, Winbourne, who pocketed £200 after beating Billy Castle (Reading) 3-2 in the final, said: “It’s been hit and miss but I got there eventually. I played some good snooker and I’m delighted to win it.

“It was a good turnout, some good players and good snooker.”

Winbourne adapted to the pro-standard table the quicker of the two former Chandler’s Ford SC juniors but Castle levelled and took a 2-1 lead with a well-taken break of 70.

After forcing a decider, Winbourne won an edgy fifth frame on the green despite committing the cardinal sin of hitting the blue on the break-off shot.

The former England international had defeated two-time and defending rankings champion Matt Ford 3-2 in the semi-finals despite his opponent from Bracknell making a 60 break in the decider.

Winbourne is hoping to realise his dream of turning professional at the end of his last season on the national under-21 circuit.

He said: “My goal on the Premier Junior Tour is to finish in the top four and qualify for the European and World Under-21s (which carry two-year Main Tour cards for the winners).”

Castle, 24, qualified for the knockout by edging Londoner Ronnie Blake 2-1 on the final black in his last group game.

Dan Sykes (Chandler’s Ford) won a three-way play-off to top his group after finishing with an identical record to Bournemouth pair Mark Wells and Jake Baker. Wells, who took the second qualification spot on a re-spotted black following the six-reds round-robin, was knocked out 2-1 in the last-16 by Matt Stadius (Chichester).

Five Gold Tour players progressed to the knockout stage. Sykes lost 2-1 from 1-0 up to James Budd (Fareham), who then took rankings leader Seb Worrall (Swindon) to a fifth-frame decider in the quarter-finals. Anthony Rice (Fordingbridge) overcame Mike Finn (Eastleigh) 2-0 before going down 3-1 to Winbourne. Aaron Smith (Selsey) lost 2-0 to David Rice (Fordingbridge) and Bradley Cowdroy (Bournemouth) went out 2-0 to Ford in the last-16.

Finn’s 83 break in the group stages was the highest of the 29 half-centuries recorded by the 39-strong field.

A Q School place and the chance of earning a two-year tour card is on offer to the rankings winner at the end of the eight-leg campaign.

Castle and Worrall are now joint top of the rankings. Castle’s Churchills team-mate Finn is third.

The fourth leg of eight at Salisbury Snooker Club on Sunday, December 11, is sponsored by independent mortgage adviser Paul McFarlane of The Aaron Partnership.

Trevor Sanders Snooker and Pool Table Services, a Fareham-based family-run firm, can be contacted via http://ift.tt/2fR0Pvd.

Regrained my cue

I was going to buy a new pool cue as mine was looking a bit tatty, but i was playing ok with it so just decided to give it a new lease of life.

It was an old craftsman classic cue with a red veneer, black ebony splice with 3 maple stripes, but it was chipped at the bottom and the splices had miscoloured. So i took it back to craftsman and they cut out the old splice and replaced it with a single tulip wood splice and thick maple veneer and also removed the end joint.

I also decided to have a go at regraining the shaft rather than pay craftsman to do it, so i bought these...

and mixed a little of each into an old cue slick bottle that i had....

and applied it liberally with a carrier bag (i tried it with a paper towel but it soaked more up than it left on the cue) i didnt take any pics of the cue but it was totally black, and so were my hands so i didnt dare pick my phone up but here is a pic of the carrier bag lol

i left it to dry for a few mins as it seemed to dry quite quickly and removed the excess with a cue towel with a tiny drop of linseed oil, then gave it a good buff with a dry towel. (i should add at this pointm i had only a week or 2 ago gone over the shaft with 400, 800, 1200, 2000 and 2400 grit paper)

anyway here is the before pics, as you can see the grain stood out but was more of a brown colour, probably due to years of sanding..

and after..

so it has worked, the grain it definitely darker, although i think i will give it one more coat next weekend as there are a couple of things i could have done differently. and on the plus side i have LOADS of the liberon stuff left and could probably do another 100 cues lol.... not sure if it is worth ebaying a few bottles?

2016 Northern Ireland Open

I'm not really that interested in this tournament. It's short format for the first rounds and many of the very best players don't play there. But it's a ranking tournament, so it deserves a thread.
In fact it is probably one of the easiest chances to win a ranking event. Mark Selby, Stuart Bingham, Judd Trump - the three top-ranked players in the world - all opted, not to play here. As well as Neil Robertson, Ali Carter and Martin Gould. That means four of the worlds eight best players and two more of the worlds top 20 ranked players are not here. With all those players out Ding Junhui, John Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Shaun Murphy and maybe Liang Wenbo and Mark Allen are probably the favorites here. But as the path for other players opened up, chances are also higher we could get a surprise winner here.

Here's a link to the draw:
http://https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Northern_Ireland_Open

This would be the possible quarterfinals:

Stephen Maguire - Liang Wenbo
Ronnie O'Sullivan - John Higgins
Shaun Murphy - Joe Perry

It struck me recently that I've been playing this wonderful poxy (Mark King description) game for 50 years or more, and I still can't get it right. every week or so I get a revelation. Today my revelation is my cue action is all wrong. I'm a short arse and I reckon I've been playing with my grip too far back on the cue. Today I started gripping just behind the joint of the 3/4 cue and I did seem to be cueing straighter and with more control. But is this another 24 hour phenomenon that will disappear tomorrow. Or is It right that short guys like me should grip further up the cue? I did notice tonight that fellow short arse John Higgins seems to grip well up the cue, though that varied depending on where he was at the table. Thoughts? Advice?
Still fiddling with cue action after 50 years

VillaGuy intro

Since I'm new to the forum I would like to let other forum members know my background concerning the sport. I have always held snooker as in my top 2 favourite sports, alongside tennis with both being ahead of Aston Villa in third place. I've always preferred one vs one sports to play, the pressure is different to team sports and I like to play where only yourself is to blame or congratulate. I first got into cue sports when I was about 10, a game of pool with my dad in a Butlins resort at Skegness, my dad had a history of playing snooker and sport in general, he was a tennis coach, but throughout his early adult life he played lots of social snooker. He took me onto a full size table when I needed a drinks crate to reach properly, and I played snooker on a quarter size table at home very regularly. Then I progressed enough to play in the Horsington and district snooker teams league in Lincolnshire. Alongside this I had weekly coaching from a coach from Lincoln, think his surname was Legate, not certain though. Then, whilst at university in Scarborough, I'd play nearly everyday in the local clubs, there are loads in Scarborough, a very popular sport there with a few massive clubs. One in Filey was an academy I believe, I didn't play there though, the standard there was very high. I used to have a regular partner/mate who never beat me over 2 years of regular play, not a frame. I joke about that with him :) Anyway I never got brilliant, my highest break was 39 which I made twice in the same session, but I regularly scored from opportunities and I played safety well. At tennis I was county standard which is one level below pro, had the technique but not the consistancy.

Still struggling with screwback

As per the thread title.

I am really struggling to get any consistently reasonable amount of screwback when I am playing. Most of the time I can only manage to screw the ball back about 8 or 9 inches, quite often even less than that, with the very very occasional 12 to 18 inches.

When I play this shot, I get the cue as low as possible at 6 oclock on the cue ball, with the cue as parallel to the table as possible but, I have noticed when watching other players that have much better success at it, that they seem to play the cue ball about 1/3rd of the way up (towards the centre of the cue ball) with the tip angled down as if aiming towards the cloth on the other side of the cueball. This seems to generate much more spin.

So FRUSTRATING!!!!

Hi from burton and district snooker league

Hi I have just joined and wanted to say hi to everyone. I have recently started my first year in the burton and district snooker league and am really enjoying it. Division 1 not premier (not that good. Yet) I wondered if people have any advise on tips. I have always used elk master which I do prefer but always seem to find that they take a lot of time to bed in and feel like a sponge one the end and make a dull sound. I have heard al sorts of things like put them in a vice over night to compact them before putting them on or sand them down by half before putting them on.
I would like to hear what you guys think would be for the best.
Regards
Tewky

Cue doctors , Scotland

Hi all

Are there any cue doctors in south or central Scotland currently taking work for repairs ?

The joint on my 3/4 is making a "tang" sound and I'd like it reglued .

I could send it away through the post but had a scare with a cue in the post recently , so would rather it was someone close enough to hand delver it too .

Cheers

Using 2 cues in a match.

Hi

Does anyone know if you are allowed to play with more than one snooker cue in a match (like 9 ball)? I've bought a new snooker cue and I'm finding I prefer it for long potting and safety but when it comes to being in the balls and break building I prefer my old one! I play in a league and wondered what the ruling is on this, I can't find anything on the internet regarding this.

Thanks for any replies!

Keeping the elbow straight?

Hey everyone, been a while since I've been on here but my thirst and determination in the game is still as strong as ever :p

I recently started watching my technique in the mirror and realized that my elbow isn't straight when I play left handed yet its perfect when I play right handed. Im pretty adept at playing both but practice and play mostly left handed despite being naturally right handed (Just the way I was taught to play accidentally by my left handed brother).

My elbow seems to learn inwards when I get down naturally and thats how it feels comfortable but its really been bothering me now that I know it isn't actually straight. I can still seem to cue straight despite this, but I'm wondering if its really important to fix and how I would go about doing it.....
Ive tried to straighten it and play but it feels super uncomfortable and actually makes me play much worse. I also noticed that my arm position doesnt look the same as it does right handed. You can see my shoulder sticking out right handed but cant see it left handed. I made a little video example to give you guys a better idea of what I'm talking about. Would appreciate the feedback, thanks

Which Pro is Most Textbook?

If you were teaching an absolute beginner, and could only recommend one player for them to try and emulate. Who it would be and why?

My vote would be for John Higgins. Not only is he one of the greatest players ever, I actually think his fundamentals are some of the most consistent and reliable under pressure.

Regraining a cue

I'm going to try and regrain one of my old cheap ash cues just as a fun project. I saw on Mike Wooldridges' website that he uses ebony dust mix with some of his oil to grain his cues. As I already own some of his oil I was wondering where I could go about getting some ebony dust without sanding down one of my other cues. Firstly I contacted Reg Wright from Wright cues to see if I could get any from him and i'm waiting on a reply. So do any of you know where I could buy/ask for some ebony dust?

Removing a butt joint

I have a cue that I want to pull the butt joint out of, it's nothing expensive, it's not even my playing cue, but I'm using it as practice before I go to work on my cue. What's the best way to do this? I was thinking of heating up the metal with a soldering iron to loosen the glue, but I've got no idea how I'm going to unscrew the thing after that, ideally I'd like to re-use it as well. Thanks in advance

ADR147 vs Maximus Ultimate

Images of cues
http://ift.tt/2eupAM7

Introduction
I've owned both sets of cues, 1 Maximus Ultimate and 2 ADR147 (see imgur album). My second ADR147 (the one with decorative splices) was too short for me at 57" so I sold it on. The cues are very similar, so i'm going to do a comparison point by point.

Splicing
Both manufacturers have excellent splicing, every splice on ever cue was very accurately done. In this category I would say both manufacturers are equal.

Shafts
Once again I would say that both manufactures are equal here, of the 3 cues I've owned they have all have extremely straight grained shafts with excellent arrows. All 3 shafts have played well in their own way, my plain ADR147 is very good in among the balls but balls but is a little weak on longer shots. Where as my Maximus is great at long shots but requires a much more solid cue action to develop the spin needed to keep position at times. Back to the spliced ADR147 Which was a mix of both worlds really, it was decent in the balls and decent at range but it felt as if it was lacking when compared to the other too (this might just have been that the cue was too short and I was struggling to get a decent follow through on the stroke with it).

Taper
I personally prefer the Maximus' taper as it seems to be a little thicker of a taper. I think this just comes down to personal preference So I cant really say one is better than the other here and the difference is so small you really have to look to see it.

Finish
The finish on my first ADR147 was smooth but when you compare it to my second ADR147 and Maximus it feels rough. When I look at the grain filler on my first ADR147 it seems to be fading away where the cue comes into contact with my bridge hand and chin. But the second AD147R had an excellent finish, and was by far the best of the three. considering I got the second ADR147 about 6 months after the first one, it might have Give ADR147 time to perfect the finish on his cues.

Pricing
The price for the ADR147s is second to none, you really can not argue with the prices he charges (approximate £125-£175 per cue through eBay, less if you go direct), where as the Maximus Ultimates I've seen going for £350-£550 on Greenbaizes website.

Conclusion
From my small sample size of only 3 cues, I would say that the Maximus Ultimates are the better cue but only by slightly. Although I think the Maximus' are better cues I would still recommend ADR147s' cues over them as you honestly can't beat their value for money and there performance rivals the Maximus which is approximately 3 times its price for a similar design.

Specs of cues in question
ADR147 Plain ebony butt: 9mm tip, 30mm butt, 18oz weight, 17"bp, 58" length.
Maximus Ultimate: 9.2mm tip, 30mm butt, 18oz weight, 17"bp, 58" length.
ADR147 Decorative splices: 9.5mm tip, 30mm butt, 17oz weight, 17"bp, 57" length

Loose weight in cue

There's a noise coming from the butt of my one piece cue everytime I struck the cue ball, I assume this is because the weight has come loose. I live relatively close to craftman cues so was considering taking it there. I was wondering how they go about repairing the weight and if there's any aestetics changes because of the repair?

Comfortable footwear!!!!

Hopefully when you play this crazy game we all love you'll spend more time on your feet than in your chair so it's imperative that you wear very comfortable footwear be that trainers in a knock or gentleman's shoes in a match.
My question to you is what do you recommend and what is the most comfortable footwear you've ever owned???
I only ask this because i'm about to treat my feet to a decent pair for a change and more than likely with a pair of Geox which i had a few years ago and they were very comfortable but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Swap wanted - MW ash for MW maple

Hi folks
I use a one piece MW Maple Legend and really love it.I saw two MW cues for sale and couldn't resist buying them.
I now find myself with two MW 3/4 ash cues as well and it is doing my head in. What I really want Is to swap the MW Tiger 3/4 ash for a MW 3/4 maple Legend. I have tried selling it but my heart isn't in it,I can salve my conscience with a swap and the poor Tiger won't get a rejection complex.
The specs of the Tiger are as follows
58, 29,9.5,19oz,16.1, blackspin ferrule,F1 butt , extension mini butt,long extension.
I would like a cue in the 57-58 max,29-29.5, 9-10,17.5-19 max range.
I had the butts already for my Legend so wouldn't need another set if the swap was fitted for F1 pieces.
Lastly I have specified MW because I love his cues but would consider cheating on him if it was done quietly.
The cue is too good to be neglected but maple and me are too well matched.
Hope somebody can help poor Tiger.
Swap wanted - MW ash for MW maple

One piece cue ...or so I thought

Hi,
In my late teens I joined my pubs pool team and was given a cue that was "behind the bar" as the rest of the team were fed up with me constantly asking to borrow their cue, the landlord said I could have the cue as he had no idea who's it was as no one had ever asked for it.
The cue was a one piece ash cue, no makers mark, no spices, in fact the black butt and "arrows" going up the shaft were painted on as at some points the paint had chipped off and the wood underneath was visible. I used the cue for a couple of years and then other life events happened and I forgot all about the cue.
Having taken up snooker in the last 3 or so years and being older and hopefully a little wiser I worked on my technique, ironing out those bad habits I had habitually built it, and finding that my game improved immensely I inevitably wanted to play more, which again only served to improve my game ...a bit of a full circle as I'm most members will recognise !......anyway back to the point of my post, although just to mention I had forgotten all about my old cue, after all it had been 20 odd years since I had even seen it. With my new improved game I had treated myself to a new cue, I visited Craftman cues in Kippax and left with a 3/4 Phoenix Master ...very nice.

I'm sorry for going on a bit and if your still reading I applause your patience, so in an attempt to cut a very long story to one that's just long, again, my tip needed replacing one day when I was due to play but I didn't have one to fit when I suddenly remembered my old cue, ran into the garage and there in the roof joists along with a few fishing rods etc was the cue, went to the club and was surprised how well I played, when I got home I decided to see exactly what was under the paint, I sanded off the butt and found that there was infact a plastic looking joint 3/4 of the way down the cue below which was a completely different wood, a chestnut coloured wood which I have no idea what it could be but I did find the whole experience interesting and although I'm under no illusions that the cue is any more than it was when I started I do think that the ash shaft is a particularly nice example but I would be interested if anyone has any thoughts on this method of making a cue, is it the way cheap mass produced cue's are or were made ?, anyone else own such a cue ?, any input, thoughts, comments gratefully received.

Again, sorry for such a long but hopefully not too boring post.

Rich.

Desperate Rice secures first win for two years

Desperate Rice secures first win for two years

ANTHONY Rice admitted he’d been “desperate for a win” after collecting his first winner’s trophy for nearly two years on a regional snooker circuit.

The 19-year-old from Fordingbridge defeated Aidan Murphy 2-1 in the final of the third leg of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour.

It ended a drought stretching back to his first tournament win on the same table at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon, on November 2, 2014.

Rice said: “Over the last year I have been getting desperate for a win. My game on the practice table has been better than ever but I just haven’t been taking it onto the match table.”

The trainee tax accountant at Fawcetts in Salisbury added: “I’ve told myself going into the last few events that I no longer expect to play to any sort of standard and that I should just enjoy it.

“This took all the pressure I have put on myself away. I didn't play that well all day but I did keep my composure - until the final at least.”

Rice, who collected £70 prize money and climbed to second place in the rankings, topped his group in the event sponsored by Tamar Independent Financial Advisers. He then defeated Bradley Cowdroy (Bournemouth) 2-0 and Callum Browne (Trowbridge) 2-1 before edging 12-year-old Murphy (Bristol) 2-1.

Reflecting on the final, Rice said: “I went 1-0 fairly quickly and, if I’m honest, expected to win at that point.

“(But) Aidan came back at me fantastically. He is an excellent young player, certainly one for the future. All credit to him.

“In the decider, all of the aforementioned about just enjoying it flew out the window. I got extremely nervous and bottled a few chances to take the match.

“Finally, I managed to pot a good long brown to leave me in a position where even I couldn’t fail! I’m delighted to get another Cuestars win under my belt.”

Murphy had earlier knocked out English Under-18 Champion Mark Lloyd, the winner of the first two legs, 2-0 in the quarter-finals and Dan Sykes (Chandler’s Ford) 2-1in the last-four.

The fourth leg of ten is at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon, on Sunday, December 4.

First “amazing” win for Pringle

A CHANDLER’S Ford teenager said it felt “amazing” to win his first regional tournament following two runners-up trophies in his previous three outings.

Charlie Pringle finally crossed the winning line in the third leg of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon.

The 15-year-old defeated David O’Callaghan (Bournemouth) 2-0 in the final of the event sponsored by Tamar Independent Financial Advisers.

“It felt amazing because I've been in three finals,” he said.

Pringle was runner-up in the final leg last season on home tables at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club to clubmate Connor Benzey and in the first leg this season in Woking when Ryan Hughes, another clubmate, needed snookers in the second frame to clinch victory.

Hughes, the winner of the first two legs in Woking and Salisbury, beat Pringle in the group stages but missed out on qualifying for the knockout by one frame.

The 14-year-old from Chandler’s Ford retains top spot in the rankings, four points ahead of Pringle. First-time finalist O’Callaghan is seven points further back.

Fourth-placed Keegan Reed (Salisbury) made a last-four exit for the second event in a row and sixth-placed Evan Plummer (Coulsdon), runner-up in the second leg in Salisbury, lost 2-0 to Pringle in the second semi.

The fourth leg of ten is at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon, on Sunday, December 4.

Maiden tournament win for the only girl on the circuit

HAVANT teenager Chloe White won her first Cuestars tournament three weeks after facing 11-time women’s world champion Reanne Evans in the UK Championship.

The 15-year-old held her nerve to edge home player Riley Ellis 2-1 in the final at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon.

White won all four of her round-robin group matches in the third leg of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour sponsored by Tamar Independent Financial Advisers.

The only girl currently competing on the junior circuit then defeated rankings leader Shane Kearns (Swindon) 2-1 in the last-four.

“I was very happy to finally win my first Cuestars event and I hope that there are many more to come,” she said.

“I played well all day, not losing a match and coming top of my group. The final was quite tight but I managed to keep my nerve and get over the finish line.”

Ellis, 12, who recorded his highest break of 38 in his group match against Chloe’s brother Callum, overcame Arnie Petty (Fordingbridge) 2-0 in his semi-final.

Three weeks previously, White made an impressive debut on the World Ladies Billiards & Snooker circuit in the LITEtask UK Ladies Championship at the Northern Snooker Centre, Leeds.
