Christmas presents
Anyone get anything nice? I got mainly socks, also some East German liquor, and a mini diabolo, I had no idea they were called that. It's one of those spinny things with the two sticks and the string that you see circus performers or jugglers using, hooked, just gone and ordered a proper one.

Greetings from the Great White North
Happy New Year! It's still morning here in Ontario, Canada, and the snow is falling.
I was introduced to snooker in my teens by a buddy with, shall we say, an incomplete understanding of the rules. Over the years I played snooker, 8 ball, 9 ball and English billiards as time permitted, but not particularly well or often. Now that the kids have left home, and my neighbour has acquired and refurbished a beautiful, hundred year old 6x12, we play snooker twice a week over the winter. It's Canada, so it's a lengthy season!
I've finally reached the stage of life where I have time and some disposable income for a decent cue, and just when I get there I find my eyes aren't what they once were. While my long potting is suffering as a result, my enjoyment of this great game just keeps on growing. I look forward to scouring through the forum and probably making an occasional post.
All the very best for 2017!!

re-tipping
Hi folks, I have recently helped three members of our club by putting new tips on their cues, I have been using my own supply of tips and not making any charge for the service. It is now becoming widely known throughout the club that I provide this service but in fairness I am going to at least ask them for the cost of the tip.
Generally speaking, what sort of charge would normally be made for this type of service? I have always done my own and have never had one come off and so hopefully this will continue for me.

How much for this foul
While playing snooker today the lads on the other table asked our advice on a foul that just happened. While playing a red the guy knocked in the green and then also the pink. He asked how much is the foul? I said I think I t is six because that is the higher value ball that went in but my mate said he thinks its four because the green went in first. Please can you guys tell us the correct foul.
Cheers Ricky

Big question
Hi,
I love the game but having received a coaching lesson the coach said I would never be any good as my leading eye is the right eye yet I am a left-handed player. My question is ; how can Ronny O'Sullivan play with both hands successfully?

Cue Suggestions?
Hello everybody,
I'm looking to purchase a new cue as soon as possible. I've been playing snooker for around 5 years on a weekly basis with my friend. I consider myself to be an amateur however my current cue isn't the greatest (bought from Argos :biggrin-new:)
I have a budget of £200-£300 for a 3/4 cue & case. What manufacturers/brands would you recommend? I've currently got my eye on a Peradon cue, however i've heard mixed reviews.
I'd be very grateful for any feedback you may have.
Regards,
Reece.

Lifting my chin off the cue
Been for a practice tonight, about 1 hour in I'm playing absolutely ****e.
So for some unknown reason I deliberately lifted my head when down on the shot so there was about an inch or so between my chin and my cue. All of a sudden I could pick out angles, had better control of the cue ball and they were going in off the lampshades.
I'm sure this isn't advisable from a technical point of view but has anyone else ever tried this?

What sort of energy do you need to play at your best?
My snooker form has taken a bit of a hit lately (which it does occasionally) and I have certainly have a lack of physical and mental energy.
When I'm bouncing I feel more energetic and my minds sharper and when life's a pain off the table I certainly don't have massive amounts of patience when my game's not on.
I used to be able to flick a switch in my mind but as I get older it's certainly getting tougher.
I used to have a lot of earlier nights to regain that energy but I'm always reminded by the fact that years ago I used to play all night sometimes.
What affects the good players on here (if anything); do you have any rules or just play through the yawns!!

Feathering
Apologies if this has been covered already. Im new to the game in terms of focussing on it and trying to learn, whereas of r years I just knocked balls around but now trying to spend some time ironing out bad habits and starting from scratch as it were
My question is this - why do players (pros and amateurs alike), tap the table with their fingers when feathering. Ive tried with and without and see no conscious difference to the eventual shot. Or am I missing something?

Importing Cues from Thailand
Hi everyone, I know it’s not really relevant to this forum but I need to import some high quality cues from Thailand maybe 10 to start of with and was wondering if anyone can give me some tips on how to do this (things like costs, taxes, import agents, etc). Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Rick Ablett

Adapting to a new cue
I moved from having a very cheap eBay cue to a hand made softer feeling cue quite a while back. I have recently changed again, as needed a slightly shorter cue.
The new cue feels much better to cue with, but, the shaft seems much 'softer' or less solid compared to the very old cue. I took that out today and realised the difference in power I can generate. With the new cue, the weight is much less also, and I have to force the stun shots, and the stun-run feels impossible. With the old (and now warped) cue the movement is so much easier.. Should I persevere, or look for a harder wood and change cues again?

Anyone got KODI on an Amazon TV usb fire stick? Any good?
Just been learning about free software called Kodi which is available online and you can put it on a fire stick and basically watch just about anything being streamed without all the agro in HD etc.
For £35 and free software sounds a no brainer. Just wondered if anyone on here had any experience of it.

Looking for a new cue, omin any good?
Hi I am in the market for a new cue, nothing too pricey. I am off to a couple of local shops tomorrow to have a look at some and see how they feel. In the meantime i have been looking online at a company called omin, does anyone on this forum have any experience with their cues either good or bad? Seem fairly cheap for hand made cues and while I don't like to buy anything without having seen and touched it in person first it is rather tempting. Trying to keep my cue under the £150 mark really any advice welcome.
Cheers

Work for nothing
I'm happy working for an old man in my dads village for nothing, absolutely anything, even though he's a staunch brexiter we have a laugh and realise I'm right and he's wrong ;) He's 80+ and honestly I love him to pieces, got so many stories to tell and is full of life even at his age. I reckon I'm painting his hall next/a few other rooms. I like doing things to help out people in my community or my fathers community. What do you do and why?

Gripping cue in the palm with wrist turned in
My natural grip is to hold the cue very much in the palm with my wrist turned very predominantly inwards. I've held the cue like this in all my years playing.
I have recently been watching a lot of snooker and noticing how none of the professionals i have been observing have a grip like mine (maybe there are some but I don't know of any???) which got me thinking that I needed to try altering my wrist position to a more 'conventional' one.
I've been experimenting with this for the last few weeks with generally poor results. I have therefore decided to stick with my natural grip as it gives me more consistency and better results plus it is natural and I don't need to think about it every shot.
Are there any merits to my grip and should I keep holding the cue this way or do I really need to get rid of this sub-optimal technique?
Looking forward to hearing some feedback on this. Thanks in advance.

Coping with the death of close family
My dad has alpha-1-antitrypsin disorder and is nearly on his last legs in this world. I hate watching him struggle for breath, all I wanted to know is how you've coped with things like this and for me to not feel so disheartened about life because of it?
He's 64 now, it was his birthday yesterday and he has lived a perfectly healthy lifestyle, he was a tennis coach. It's so upsetting seeing him needing steroids and antibiotics every time he has a cold. Far too young to go when it's not his fault. Some people with his disorder need 100% oxygen when they are in their 30's, so I guess he has done well to make it to his age, but I don't like what I'm seeing myself.

maximus ultimate 'finish'
Just bought a maximus ultimate from craftsman and i am really happy with it. Having owned a couple of cues from JP including up to recently a 1 piece special cue this new one is, in my humble opinion, superior. Better looking ash and feel.........BUT, for some reason, passing my understanding, the people at maximus thought it would be a good idea to cover the bottom 3rd of the cue in some kind of thick lacquer or varnish. Not that it bothers me too much but i just think that it would have felt and looked so much better with a simple oil finish like other top end cues. Anyway, im not complaining really but just wondering if i can remove the lacquer without risking any damage to the cue. Be advised i am clumsy as i am stupid. Thanks.

Came across this cue in a local sports shop £39.99 as a possible presi for my boy ok its a cheapo cue but the splurge says it it is hand spliced ? (Dont think the butt is painted) and from what I can see it has a modern vacuum joint plus mini extention I am no expert but it appeared a good cue for the price, are cheap Powerglide just China rubbish or would it be a good punt for a entry level player ????? Trying to Solve a Rules Argument
Say your opponent pots the cue ball. Is it legal for you take your "D" zone ball in hand shot directly at a eligible ball that is also within the "D" zone on the following shot? Or do you have to deflect off a rail in order to legally make contact with a ball in the "D" zone on a ball in hand shot? Thanks for any clarification!

Cue Tube Wanted.
Hi everyone..
In my snooker club they have hanging on the wall some snooker cue tubes with a latch for a small lock at the bottom alas all have been taken but the steward has said if I can get my own I could hang it on the wall with the others..
So has anyone got a metal cue tube that I might be able to buy I will of course pay for it and pay the postage as well.
There must be one or two in some club somewhere?
Cheers Boon

A first for Cue Crafty. 🤔
Right, was feeling brave. Never ever filmed myself playing snooker and had no idea how my technique looked. Slightly disappointed but a major positive is to actually see the flaws first hand for the first time. Head moving too much etc etc.....
Please note:-
Apologies as the video is crap (must do better) and there is more reflection off my spam than the cue ball. Lastly I obviously haven't waited for that special moment where I don't miss anything....😉

Handicaps in snooker
I have a general question regarding handicaps.
Shall we say a player is deemed to be a 6 black handicapper, i.e. he has to give a non-handicapper a 6 black start, correspondingly he would only give a 1 black start to a player deemed to be a five black handicapper and so on.
My question is, using the above as a guide, what sort of break would you expect the 6 black handicapper to CONSISTENTLY achieve in most of the frames played.
I hope that I have explained myself OK.
Thanks for any input.

Cheap Chinese cues
This one is almost half price if you're in the market for a snooker ball arm :) http://ift.tt/2hOrucW
Not quite sure what to make of it, it's half snooker cue half pool cue, I'm guessing it's really for Chinese 8-ball.

Ford motors further ahead
BACK-to-back tournament wins have given Berkshire cueman Matt Ford a healthy lead on a regional over-40s snooker circuit.
Ford, from Martins Heron, Bracknell, followed his success on the Cuestars South of England Seniors Tour in Woking last month with victory in Marchwood.
The 41-year-old defeated Mike Talmondt 2-0 in the final of the fourth leg at Cue T’s Social & Snooker Lounge.
After taking the first frame by a distance, Ford compiled a 48 break in the next and his title rival from Portsmouth conceded with four reds left.
“I’ve been in (all) four finals now and managed to win two,” said Ford. “Mike’s a tough opponent so I’m always glad to beat him.
“I had a black to go into the pack for a big one but managed to miss that and Mike didn’t punish me. I got lucky.”
And he added: “It’s a very nice club. The tables are in good condition.”
Ford dropped only one frame out of 13 in the Dransfields-sponsored event. And that was against Stephen Hills (Northfleet) in the last-eight. But he nearly lost another to Chris Stocker, a fellow member of Sunninghill Comrades Club in Ascot, in the first frame of their semi-final when he needed a snooker.
Elsewhere, David Stewart (Odiham) cleared the table for a personal best 55 break in his 2-1 defeat by Dan Hammond in the group stages.
Hammond (Winchester) went on to make his first appearance in a semi-final where he was knocked out 2-0 by ex-professional Talmondt.
It wasn’t until the 18th round-robin match that the first break of 40 or more was recorded by any of the 17 runners. The grinding matchplay was ended when Ford made a 47 in his first frame against Steve Ashton (Salisbury) – and followed that with the day’s highest of 66 in the next.
Ford leads Talmondt by 16 points. Quarter-finalist Martin Wallace (Wokingham) climbed one place to third. The absent John Hunter (Andover) dropped to fourth and Stocker is fifth.
The fifth leg of seven is at Jesters Snooker Club, Swindon, on Sunday, January 29. The top-20 ranked players at the end of the series - which is sponsored by Leeds-based Dransfields, the UK’s largest independent supplier of gaming and amusement machines to pubs and clubs - will play off for £500 prize money in Newbury on April 23.
CUE T’S SOCIAL & SNOOKER LOUNGE
New owner Trevor Hambly bought Cue T’s 20 months ago and has obviously put a lot of time and money into bringing the tables up to scratch, which was much appreciated by all the Seniors Tour players.
The friendly club has nine snooker tables, including a Rileys silver leg, separated from a large bar area by a glass partition.
Situated in the heart of Marchwood village next to a free car park, it boasts two pool tables, two dartboards and an all-day breakfast to die for.

Ford motors further ahead

Atrocities in the Middle East
I was interested to learn why we, the UK and others are quite so keen to rescue al-Qaeda from Aleppo and deliver them, armed, to Idlib in order to continue their campaign of rape, murder and repression. Then I read about the discovery among the population of East Aleppo, of a group of US, UK, Qatari, Saudi military advisers, who appear to be helping al-Qaeda in their campaign. Unearthed as the safe space for AQ has diminished to nothing. Oops.
But AQ have burned the buses which were to rescue civilians from the counterparty villages which were to be evacuated at the same time, and have murdered the drivers. That might affect rescuing the US, UK etc miltary advisers. Oops.
Also interested to read this, not the kind of thing I imagine gets much prime time coverage in the West.
''
Coverage of the Syrian war will be remembered as one of the most shameful episodes in the history of the American press. Reporting about carnage in the ancient city of Aleppo is the latest reason why.
For three years, violent militants have run Aleppo. Their rule began with a wave of repression. They posted notices warning residents: “Don’t send your children to school. If you do, we will get the backpack and you will get the coffin.” Then they destroyed factories, hoping that unemployed workers would have no recourse other than to become fighters. They trucked looted machinery to Turkey and sold it.
This month, people in Aleppo have finally seen glimmers of hope. The Syrian army and its allies have been pushing militants out of the city. Last week they reclaimed the main power plant. Regular electricity may soon be restored. The militants’ hold on the city could be ending.
Militants, true to form, are wreaking havoc as they are pushed out of the city by Russian and Syrian Army forces. “Turkish-Saudi backed ‘moderate rebels’ showered the residential neighborhoods of Aleppo with unguided rockets and gas jars,” one Aleppo resident wrote on social media. The Beirut-based analyst Marwa Osma asked, “The Syrian Arab Army, which is led by President Bashar Assad, is the only force on the ground, along with their allies, who are fighting ISIS — so you want to weaken the only system that is fighting ISIS?”
This does not fit with Washington’s narrative. As a result, much of the American press is reporting the opposite of what is actually happening. Many news reports suggest that Aleppo has been a “liberated zone” for three years but is now being pulled back into misery.
Americans are being told that the virtuous course in Syria is to fight the Assad regime and its Russian and Iranian partners. We are supposed to hope that a righteous coalition of Americans, Turks, Saudis, Kurds, and the “moderate opposition” will win.
This is convoluted nonsense, but Americans cannot be blamed for believing it. We have almost no real information about the combatants, their goals, or their tactics. Much blame for this lies with our media.
Under intense financial pressure, most American newspapers, magazines, and broadcast networks have drastically reduced their corps of foreign correspondents. Much important news about the world now comes from reporters based in Washington. In that environment, access and credibility depend on acceptance of official paradigms. Reporters who cover Syria check with the Pentagon, the State Department, the White House, and think tank “experts.” After a spin on that soiled carousel, they feel they have covered all sides of the story. This form of stenography produces the pabulum that passes for news about Syria.
Astonishingly brave correspondents in the war zone, including Americans, seek to counteract Washington-based reporting. At great risk to their own safety, these reporters are pushing to find the truth about the Syrian war. Their reporting often illuminates the darkness of groupthink. Yet for many consumers of news, their voices are lost in the cacophony. Reporting from the ground is often overwhelmed by the Washington consensus.
Washington-based reporters tell us that one potent force in Syria, al-Nusra, is made up of “rebels” or “moderates,” not that it is the local al-Qaeda franchise. Saudi Arabia is portrayed as aiding freedom fighters when in fact it is a prime sponsor of ISIS. Turkey has for years been running a “rat line” for foreign fighters wanting to join terror groups in Syria, but because the United States wants to stay on Turkey’s good side, we hear little about it. Nor are we often reminded that although we want to support the secular and battle-hardened Kurds, Turkey wants to kill them. Everything Russia and Iran do in Syria is described as negative and destabilizing, simply because it is they who are doing it — and because that is the official line in Washington.
Inevitably, this kind of disinformation has bled into the American presidential campaign. At the recent debate in Milwaukee, Hillary Clinton claimed that United Nations peace efforts in Syria were based on “an agreement I negotiated in June of 2012 in Geneva.” The precise opposite is true. In 2012 Secretary of State Clinton joined Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Israel in a successful effort to kill Kofi Annan’s UN peace plan because it would have accommodated Iran and kept Assad in power, at least temporarily. No one on the Milwaukee stage knew enough to challenge her.
Politicians may be forgiven for distorting their past actions. Governments may also be excused for promoting whatever narrative they believe best suits them. Journalism, however, is supposed to remain apart from the power elite and its inbred mendacity. In this crisis it has failed miserably.
Americans are said to be ignorant of the world. We are, but so are people in other countries. If people in Bhutan or Bolivia misunderstand Syria, however, that has no real effect. Our ignorance is more dangerous, because we act on it. The United States has the power to decree the death of nations. It can do so with popular support because many Americans — and many journalists — are content with the official story. In Syria, it is: “Fight Assad, Russia, and Iran! Join with our Turkish, Saudi, and Kurdish friends to support peace!” This is appallingly distant from reality. It is also likely to prolong the war and condemn more Syrians to suffering and death.

Snooker rules
Hi all!
Last time I played we had some difficulties with some rules, especially 2 occasions:
1 Is it possible to aim for a colored ball, for example black and then hit another colored ball in hole. Is this ok? Ex. aim for black, hit yellow in hole.
2 If the white ball jumps out of the table what happens then: how many points for the oppenent and where to put the white ball?
I havent seen those 2 occasions on television, probably because they are professionals :)
THANKS!

Faggots!
I've noticed Mr Brain's faggots have only 8% pork. How did this happen? I'm sure that back in the old days, there was more pork in them. Maybe that's why they are a bit sloppy and sort of mushy, no texture. It all seems to be sauce and water. Very unconvincing, too much mincing?
Is anyone else disappointed at the standard of faggots these days?
I find very mushy faggots everywhere but nothing firm that seems fair.

Dating girls
I can say I've had quite few encounters. One story I have is when I was with a mate who did motorcross we came against these bunch of girls, walking past them one asked me if I wanted a BJ :) That was it, and all the other lasses wanted some of the action, like the week later the other lasses would phone me up and offer all sorts. I know it aint quit dating but it's similiar enough. I've got many more

Just saying Hello..
As other people have said new to the forum but not to snooker or pool.
I have played for many years both snooker and pool but think it would be nice to join a forum so here I am? I've just returned to the UK after 15 years living in Spain where there was nothing but American pool which I hate..
I have just retired so I'm looking to get out a bit more and play some pool and snooker?
Will chat with you as the weeks go on I'm sure.
Boon.

Choosing the line of aim before going down on the shot
I remember I read a while ago that the correct technique is to choose the line of aim before you take the shot, place your right foot on the line of aim then don't adjust the line of aim while down on the shot. Despite reading that, what I have been doing is adjusting the line of aim while down on the shot. I have just been trying to the former method, not adjusting when down on the shot and it seems to work a lot better. I'm choosing the line of aim naturally while stood up then not adjusting when down. It's actually a lot more relaxing way to play, and I'm playing quicker too, without fretting. I hope that makes sense, any thoughts on this? Thanks

One piece or 3/4 cue?
I have played with one pieces a few times, and like during post match Q&A today have said, they feel sweeter in contact than joint cues. I want to buy myself a new cue, do people think the reduction in transportability is more important or the feel of the cue? Do many people on here play with one piece cues?

O'Sullivan wins to set up White tie
Old Parris Advert
How times have changed, the range back then was tiny compared to what there is now. Never realised they seemed to do a cue that was split through the splicing as one of the collection cues, something that isn't recommended these days due to the joints bedding in and the alignment shifting slightly. Prices are obviously a lot lower but depending when this advert was made (late 80's possibly) still a decent chunk of change.
Mark Allen At it again
Mark Allen as Said that with today's Standards of play that Steve Davis would not make the top 64 in the rankings, not sure if he meant playing now or playing when he was in his prime in the 80's, Both Alan McManus and Neal Foulds, disagreed and said, Steve Davis would probably still be a top 16 player, but maybe not win the world championship, how dare Allen put a six times world and UK Champion down, after his quotes about mark Joyce he needs to be careful what he says, even if it his own point of view or he could get a heavy fine or even ban fro world snooker

Finn: I'd be a part-time pro
MIKE Finn reckons he’s “not good enough” to earn a living on the professional snooker circuit despite being back in the race for a Q School place.
Southampton’s six-time Town Champion defeated his Churchills A teammate Billy Castle 3-0 in 36 minutes to win the fourth leg of the Cuestars South of England Championship Tour.
Castle was actually in first in all three frames at Salisbury Snooker Club. He broke down on 13 in the opener and Finn helped himself to a 72.
He broke down on 12 in the next and, after his 30-year-old opponent from Eastleigh failed to capitalise, snookered himself on a run of 36. A 52 clearance to the black made it 2-0.
And after the 24-year-old had broken down on eight in the third, Finn did most of the damage with a break of 42.
“I managed to play well in the final,” said Finn. “I played rubbish all day, absolutely terrible, just scrapped it out.
“But I found some form in the final, which was good. It was a pretty key clearance in the second frame.”
Finn, the fourth different winner of the four legs this season, pocketed £160 prize money for winning the event sponsored by Salisbury-based independent mortgage adviser Paul McFarlane of The Aaron Partnership.
However, they’ll be no travelling the world and living out of a suitcase for the liability claims handler if he were to win the rankings title at the end of the eight-leg campaign and claim the Q School place and if he were to qualify for a two-year professional tour card.
“No way,” he insisted. “You’ve got to be seriously good to earn money at that game. And I’m not good enough.
“I’d go to Q School and, if I somehow manage to qualify, I’d just play in the World Championship and the UK Championship.
“I just enjoy competing. I know there’s a real decent result in me somewhere.”
Castle (Reading), who won the second leg at Chandler’s Ford SC, leads Seb Worrall (Swindon) by 12 points. Finn is ten points further back in third.
Jordan Winbourne (Southampton), winner of the third leg in Havant, missed out on qualification for the knockout on frames average after losing to Ronnie Blake (London) 2-0. But he was also nearly defeated in his first match. Martin Wallace (Wokingham) led the 20-year-old by 13 points with pink and black remaining in the decider – and lost on a re-spotted black.
Leg-one winner Worrall, beaten 3-2 by Castle in the last-eight, recorded the day’s highest break of 123 in his second group-stage match against Andrew Seymour (Newbury).
Castle had claimed the best runners-up spot in the quarter-finals by overcoming 14-year-old Bradley Cowdroy (Bournemouth) in a one-frame play-off. The pair had finished the round-robin stage with an identical frames average.
And two-time champion Matt Ford (Bracknell) had said his goodbyes and was on the verge of leaving the club after losing to Rikki Moore (Bournemouth) when it was pointed out that he could still qualify if Mike Trigg (East Wellow) beat Moore in their final group match.
Ford, who had reached the knockout in all of his 15 previous outings, watched Trigg battle back from 1-0 down to prevail 2-1 – thanks, in no small part, to a three-ball plant in the decider.
The phoenix from the flames story was coming to fruition as Ford dispatched Reece King (Bournemouth) 3-1 in the last-eight and then clawed back a two-frame deficit to force a decider against Castle in the semi-finals. But despite leading for most of the frame, Ford lost on the final black.
The fifth leg of eight, sponsored by Fuller’s Brewery, is at Fareham Snooker Club on Sunday, January 15.

Finn: I'd be a part-time pro

Which Shot Picture Looks Right?
Question for right handed players.
Well, first please excuse the crudeness. I had to use oranges to hopefully explain things, and couldn't wait until I was at a pool table.
Imagine the clip (inside the red circle) is the pocket. Of these two images (A & B). Which one would you consider to be correct?

Scottish Open: John Higgins beats Alan McManus, Stuart Bingham goes out
Why watch snooker? Five questions for Terry Griffiths
2016 Scottish Open
Starts today so I though I just start a thread, though general interest in this tournament is probably not so high, myself included. And to a lesser extent also the players.
The two World Championship finalists Mark Selby and Ding Junhui prefered to take a rest. So the way to the title is definitely already a bit easier. Also Martin Gould withdrew.
The first four rounds are unfortunately in the Best-of-7-format. So it will be really tough to say who will come through. Maybe another surprise winner as in Northern Ireland a few weeks ago? Though the field there was a bit weaker with more of the top players opting not to play in Belfast. With Zhou Yuelong vs. Stephen Maguire, Kyren Wilson vs. Jamie Jones, Alan McManus vs. John Higgins (a reprise of this years quarterfinal at the World Championship that ended with a surprise) and Ali Carter vs. Thepchaiya Un-Nooh there already a few interesting first-round-duels though.
Here's the link to the draw:
http://ift.tt/2gD2t33
It's difficult, nearly tedious to talk about who will make it to the quarterfinals here. There will definitely be some surprises along the way and with Best-of-7 they are hard to call.
Still it's kind of fun, so here my guesses:
Section 1: Stuart Bingham is the favorite here. He should fancy his chances to get through to the round of the last eight. Though in the second round he could again meet Yu Delu. For the third times in three weeks. Yu won at the UK Championship (6-4), but Bingham prevailed last week in the qualifiers for the German Masters (5-3).
Section 2: Liang Wenbo is here. As is Barry Hawkins. And Matthew Stevens who reached the fourth round at the UK Championship.
Section 3: Maybe a chance for Neil Robertson to get back on track? He opens agsinst Thor Chuan Leong before playing (if he wins that is) the survivor of Gary Wilson vs. Allan Taylor. In the other half of this section there is Marco Fu. Though with Best-of-7 I can see Fu lose early. Maybe Liam Highfield who wasn't playing bad lately could take his place.
Section 4: The upper half here is quite packed for a 128 tableau. Fergal O'Brien, Zhou Yuelong and Stephen Maguire (who play each other as stated above), Michael Holt and Mark Williams are all here. And in the other half there is Shaun Murphy, who has a dangerous task in Zhao Xintong already in the first round.
Section 5: Judd Trump opens against Zhang Yong, could come against another chinese youngster Yan Bingtao in round 3. Down there is the duel between Kyren Wilson and Jamie Jones. If Trump loses early this part of the draw could be wide open.
Section 6: None of the really big names here. The favorites are Ali Carter and Joe Perry. But there are some traps in form of Chris Wakelin, David Gilbert, Anthony Hamilton or maybe Hossein Vafaei Ayouri. Who knows?
Section 7: On paper Mark Allen has a quite favorable draw to round 4 here. There he could meet Ronnie O'Sullivan, whose biggest obstacle before could be Ryan Day.
Section 8: John Higgins, despite his surprising loss in the German Masters qualifiers is the favorite here. He meets Alan McManus first and could play another countryman next in Scott Donaldson. Over there are also Dominic Dale, Luca Brecel and Ricky Walden.
Picks for the quarterfinals:
Bingham - Hawkins
Highfield - Murphy
Trump - Carter
O'Sullivan - Walden
Edit: Just saw there is also a thread in the "questions" forum. I thought a thread about the tournament was more fitting here, but of course you can close this one, if you feel that it's irrelevant in which subforum we discuss this tournament.

Practice
I have usually concentrated on routines like the line up, and other simple routines which mainly involve potting and CB control.
Now, while I have made immense progress since I started in understanding what the contacts do (just seeing natural angle and what screw does to the path took me a while), and generating screw (which I am now pretty proficient at)....I am still hampered by poor potting. This prevents me moving on, as I am confident in my brain work to build breaks and control white, I just pick the wrong angle, or med range pots are a lottery unless I am on my game.
I am considering ditching all this for a bit and try just repeating pots over and over. Hit 50 hb blacks, then 50 from other side. Then try a shot along Cush, over and over until that pot is second nature.
A coach once told me doing the same shot 100x teaches way more than 100 random shots. I guess this is because it lays down a "groove" in your brain for that angle and weight and your brain finds that more usefum than lots of random data, if that makes sense.
Would you recommend, for me as a 10-20 breaker with a rare 30, to focus on pots.
I know practice is everything I just want to make the most of my time.
Cheers

Searching for a great cue
I've been wanting to buy a good cue in the 500-800 quid range. I tried a John Parris cue in Germany but didn't care much for the stroke. Recently, I heard some buzz on Facebook about a brand from Thailand called Maximus. Their cues were highly recommended and very reasonably priced at about $300 for a custom cue with all the extensions, case and shipping. What are your thoughts on this brand?
Here's what I want to buy:
19 oz
9.25 mm tip
3/4 butt tapered down to 28 mm
58" length
I need a thin heavier cue because I enjoyed playing with one a long time back and also the tables I play on these days are slow.

Complete Newbie - Searching for advice.
Hello everyone,
I've recently discovered snooker after coming across a youtube upload of the 2012 World Championship Final and instantly fallen in love with the game and would really like to get into it (and maybe take it seriously), so I plan on sticking around here and have a load of questions to throw your way:
1) Being from Mid-Wales it's hard to find a snooker table, would practicing on a pool table (with snooker balls) be a good place to start?
2) Is it worth paying for a coach to start off with to learn stance/cue action or should I figure it out as I go along?
3) How would I go about joining a snooker club? (I'm a bit nervous about joining one as a complete beginner).
Thanks in advance!

Can anyone explain what's happening here please
My game seemed to have gone to pot, if you'll excuse the pun. I spent a few quid on a two hour session with a World Snooker coach and really enjoyed it and picked up loads of good advice.
We were doing some basic short range straight potting blue off the spot into middle and every time the cue ball struck the blue the blue would hit the left knuckle and rarely go straight in the pocket. So first off to ensure I was hitting the white dead centre he had me knock the cue ball up and down the spots. No problem, straight up and down. So we went back to the blue and every time the object ball was struck it went left.
He said that I needed to readjust my aim such that it would go to the right of where I thought it needed to go. i did and that worked. he pointed out that it would take many many hours of practice to effectively retrain my brain. Im fine with all that and I continue to try and correct it.
But here is my question. for many years I had no issue with picking the angle and potting the ball. So why has this happened - what's going on with my brain/eyesight?
To be clear - Im not looking for solution to fix as I believe I have that, I'm just asking what folk's theory is to the root cause?
Thanks

Will potting angles change with the use of stun, follow or screw?
Hi all, for shots that are not straight, will the use of stun, screw or follow alter the required potting angle?
For example when potting a half ball blue with stun, do I have to aim a bit thinner? I was practicing today and kept missing it thick.

A newbie to the Snooker, but no to the game.
Hi I'm Charley Bond & I love Snooker. Been playing Snooker since I was 14, I'm 74.
I don't PLAY Snooker "now", at my Pool Room, because the Snooker table is used for playing Golf. However, I am just installing a "new to me" Brunswick 10 Foot 6-leg Snooker table.
I'm looking forward to it. I'm putting on new cushions & new felt. Won't be long now...
I am in the Pool N Billiard business, I am the owner of the BreakRAK company, www.breakrak.com . The BreakRAK is a tool to practice the open break shot in the game of Pocket Billiards.
I decided to join, so I might learn some more about playing Snooker, since time & technology have made tremendous advances.

Scared of flying
I have got to admit everytime I step into a plane I'm concerned about my life. I grew up flying remote controlled planes, an interest in falconry, worked at the BBMF squadron in Coningsby, everything looked destined that I'd be a pilot with loving everything that flew but I am scared of flying. Surely there's a lot of us out there, the crash in Pakistan and the Brazilian football team has increased those fears

Ideally I wanted 3/4 ash, nice chevrons, hopefully quite heavy too.
Thanks guys!

Ok - I gave up playing because despite 10+ hours a week practice, I still could never beat my friend who turned up once a week and whooped me!
I recently wondered if just isolating and concentrating on the actual act of cueing - I.e working on the LINE of the cue. I mainly worked on rhythm and follow through.
What I found is that I often cue right and the cue seems to wobble about.
My wrist is turned in in my natural cueing, almost with palm under cue.
I wonder if the fact my only contact points are bridge, chin and hand. I don't have a chest contact.
The cue doesn't want to go straight on rails, I am wondering if the I need a chest contact?
I am also wondering if I have fundamental issues with my setup and grip.
Any help for anchoring the cue in a straight line through the ball?

Coulsdon results
LONDONER Ronnie Blake reckons there was no home advantage after claiming the fourth leg of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour.
The 20-year-old from Carshalton defeated Connor Benzey 2-1 on one of the professional standard tables at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon.
Benzey just needed the brown to win the first frame but lost on the black. The 14-year-old first-time finalist from Eastleigh forced a decider on the blue but Blake cruised to victory by a distance in the third.
Blake, who climbed to third in the rankings, said: “It’s been a struggle but I came through.
“It was scrappy. I didn’t feel as if I was cueing well.”
And he added that he rarely practises on the Star tables at his home club.
Rankings leader Mark Lloyd (Gosport), beaten 2-1 from 1-0 up by his Premier Junior Tour colleague Blake in the semi-finals, extended his lead to 16 points over Anthony Rice (Fordingbridge).
Blake, who insists he’s not bothered about going a frame or two behind, admitted: “(Lloyd) can play a bit and he can knock in a few.”
Ten-year-old Oliver Sykes (Chandler’s Ford) won all three group games against Blake, Rice and Arron Smith (Chichester) before going out 2-1 to Benzey in the last-eight.
Mickey Joyce, appearing in his first Gold semi-final, lost 2-1 on the final black to Benzey. The 13-year-old from Basingstoke was promoted in 2014 after winning the Silver rankings title 16 days before his 11th birthday.
Blake knocked in the day’s highest break of 65 in his 2-0 quarter-final victory over Callum Browne (Trowbridge).

Cuestars record breaker
RYAN Hughes has earned himself a place in the Cuestars records book.
The 14-year-old from Chandler’s Ford won the fourth leg of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon.
And that was an incredible sixth tournament win in seven outings on the junior circuit.
A trawl through the archives revealed that no player has matched or beaten that run since the Gold, Silver and Bronze Tours replaced the handicapped events in 2009.
Hughes - who, in fact, has now won eight out of 12 - kept his nerve to edge home player Evan Plummer on two black-ball games in the final. And he was 20 points behind with 25 on in the second frame.
Despite competing in such an important match, Hughes maintained his trademark outwardly calm persona and strode around the professional standard Star table, equipped with TV-style high lighting, as if he owned it.
He insisted he was not fazed by the pressure of the occasion or by his friends and family standing in the shadows.
“It’s nice to know that people are watching,” he said.
Although the teenager described Plummer as “a very good player”, he added: “It doesn’t matter who I play. You don’t play the player, you play the table.”
The rankings leader only lost one frame, to Nat Kidner (Ferndown) in the group stages, out of 13 throughout the event.
“I played pretty well all day,” he said. “It’s been good. I enjoyed it.”
Hughes won the final two legs last season to secure the Bronze Tour rankings title, clinched the Bronze championship play-off in May and has now collected three winner’s trophies from the first four Silver legs this season.
In the last-four, Hughes overcame his Chandler’s Ford SC clubmate Bowen Zhu 2-0 while Plummer beat Charlie Pringle, also from Chandlers Ford, by the same scoreline.

Kearns edges further ahead
SWINDON teenager Shane Kearns survived a nail-biting group stage to edge further ahead in the race for the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour rankings title.
Kearns collected his second winner’s trophy of the season after beating Chloe White 2-0 in the final of the fourth leg at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon, south London.
But the 15-year-old admitted that he “just about scraped” through to the knockout.
Although he recorded his highest break of 30 against the home club’s Ronnie Sullivan in the group stages, he lost 2-1 to White (Havant) and then 2-1 to Will Forster (Gosport) in his fourth and last match. And that one frame took him through to the quarter-finals.
“One minute it was good and then it was shocking, all over the place,” he said. “I just about scraped through by one frame.”
Kearns dispatched his Jesters clubmate Riley Ellis 2-0 in the last-four and White by the same scoreline in the final on one of the club’s professional standard tables.
Reflecting on the Star table, he said: “It’s fast. I’ve played on it once before (in last year’s final) but it’s tough getting used to it.”
Kearns won the first leg in Woking, was runner-up to Chloe’s brother Callum in Salisbury and was knocked out in the semi-finals in Swindon by Chloe, whom he leads in the rankings by 16 points. Ellis is third and Callum is fourth.
Sullivan had a day to remember on his Cuestars debut. The 12-year-old took a frame off the eventual tournament winner and recorded his highest break of 24 against Harry Joyce (Eastleigh).

Rare Plate appearance
BRADLEY Cowdroy made a rare appearance in the Plate competition and took home the winner’s trophy.
It was more than two years ago that the Bournemouth potter won promotion from the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour to the Gold Tour.
Since then, the 14-year-old has played in 18 tournaments and qualified from the round-robin group stages in all but three.
Three defeats out of four during the fourth leg at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon, south London, meant Cowdroy missed out on a place in the last-eight.
But he went on to beat Callum White (Havant) in the Plate final.

Mike Wooldrige Disrespectful Words At Website
So I Was to Visit his website in order to explore few options but here are some Descriptions,Notices which I feel so Disrespectful on a Customer's point of view :( here are few
"Do Not email me asking for a list of what I have. I do not have time for that plus I do not even know myself. I will simply be working through it all and whatever gets completed, goes into the shop. If you like what you see, buy it. If you don't, simply look again in a few weeks. But don't go asking me to look for a certain type or you will make me very angry. And we don't want that now do we?..."
"Let's be clear about one thing - My cues are the best available.
If you don't like me saying that - Tough. They are"
"These cues will be, without doubt, the pinnacle of the cue making art.
They will be strictly limited and I will not be taking any orders. Instead, as and when I have finished a cue, I will list it in the shop or notify customers who have registered an interest.
I will not enter into any design discussions, nor time schedules. These will be my 'babies' and they will be ready when I am ready.
If I do not have a clear mind, I will not make any, so please leave me alone to do them at my own pace."
"If you thought VCM cues were expensive, don't even bother asking for a price, as each cue will be valued at a minimum 1500+ and there will be no fixed pricing based on actual design.
Instead, I will decide at the time how much I want. Whether anyone wants to pay for it or not, I could not care less. I do not need the money and I'm more than happy to keep my 'babies' for my own pleasure.
Consequently, with this attitude (lol), I do not expect to have customers queuing up, but I can guarantee these cues will the most beautiful examples ever made."
"Final Word
I may have gone mad. I'm not sure yet..."
I mean what this Guy want to show ???? If he sold couple of Pieces for good money than what's so Special about that??There are hundreds of Top Cuemakers providing best cues with Best possible Customer service including Manners and Respectful Dealing But I don't know what type of business strategy is that he is following ,, I know there people including window shoppers that disturb you with Emails and Phone Calls etc But For a Nice Person to Deal with you have to bear those people and not pass that type of stupid Descriptions ,,
Well I know many will tend to disagree but what I thought I expressed here...

Hi all, my name is Lee, im 28 from Poole, been playing snooker on and off now for 4 years. Started off as a bit of fun with my dad up the local club then i got (The BUG). I work 9 hours a day fitting tyres but want to be playing snooker for 9 hours instead haha (wishful thinking) now lets wake up!
My highest break in a match is 37 and that came around 3-4 months ago. I play at least 3 times a week if i can for 2-3 hours a session.
I try to play the Green baize handicap comp on Saturday evenings. Best result so far 2nd round.
Best part of my game = My safety is actually pretty good...
Worst part of my game = Sometimes too attacking... (big risk taker)
My Top 5 players in no order. Mark Selby, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Mark J Williams, Judd Trump, Liang Wenbo.
Just looking to chill here, meet some nice people and talk about the game i most love in this crazy messed up world. Look forward to chatting with some fellow enthusiasts.

Woolie going high . . .
Wow, when I bought the same cue from Welshpool it was £113.
Who'd have thought they would go this high. As long as min of 2 people want it I suppose ?

Cue Craft replacement badge
Hi everyone,
after identifying an old cue as a Cue Craft cue yesterday (thanks again to the cue experts here) I asked Cue Craft for a replacement badge. I go this disappointing answer:
"Hello Sir,
I am very sorry but we have completely changed the badges on all our cues and they now have a different diameter so the new ones will not fit and we do not have any of the old ones available. We had to do this because the company that used to make our badges closed down.
Kind regards,
Neil"
I thought there was something like a "standard badge diameter" but I was proved wrong. Is there any chance to get a fitting original Cue Craft badge from a collector or seller of used cues and accessories?
Thanks once again for your support,
Markus

Snookers
Getting out of snookers is without doubt the worst part of my game.
I'm an old codger who can only put together breaks of 20 to 30 mostly, with a very infrequent 40 or so happening once in a Blue moon!
What I would like to do is become more proficient at getting out of snookers, it is this part of my game that I'm really not that good at. can any of you chaps point me in the direction of some good videos that I could have a look at on this very cold, frosty and foggy morning please?
Thank you.

Help needed: Which cuemaker made this cue?
Hi everyone,
I bought an old cue recently and cannot identify the cuemaker. As the previous owner has passed away I hope that some of the experts here have a clue who built this cue.
It is definitely handspliced and has no joint at the butt end to put extensions on. But it does have an telescopic extensions that can be screwed on the 3/4 shaft.
There are three sticker each with the number 001793 at the butt, at the 3/4 shaft and at the extension.

We seem to have had our thread closed, so in the meantime.....
Yeah, expected more from Ben tonight, maybe it's just me but I thought his performance was a bit, well, can't be arsed.
Good result for the Belgium Banger though, 6 - 1 over Delu, idk, he beats Bingsy 6 - 4 then this.
Anyway, come on Mei, give us a match to watch....:)

Time for a new cue, opinions required
Evening all.
I primarily play 8 ball pool (uk) but often hit the snooker table in order to practise more. I've been playing a few years now and I'm pretty decent at both. This Christmas I've decided to get a new cue. The budget is 100-150 pounds.
I've seen woods, dunns, master pop up.
My question is that with the budget I have which cue maker would you go with? Doesn't have to be in that list.
Thanks.

4 foot table
My son of 5 has been getting interested in snooker and was thinking about getting a 4 foot table which reading reviews is good for this age to start learning on. I've been looking at one at argos which has good reviews although one mentions the tips on the cues are useless. Is there a good one out there I should be aware of or in this size does it not matter so much?

Fastest and most durable snooker cloth?
Looking for some new cloth for my table. Currently have the Strachan 6811 tournament 30 oz but am pretty disappointed with how slow it is to be honest. Even after ironing it doesnt get much faster. I see that Number. 10 and 6811 tournament are both sold as 931g/m(30oz/yd). Is the cloths speed determined by the weight? Would that mean that No.10 and 6811 are pretty much the same? Does anyone know of some really fast and durable cloth as an alternative, advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Concessions - just a thought
I know that a player can only offer his concession, his opponent doesn't have to accept it. Say if someone messes up a shot and starts pulling reds out of the pockets, but you don't accept his concession, do the reds stay where they are, or does the ref have to put the table back the way it was? Also if he takes his cue and rakes the balls across the table, what happens then? Or if you don't accept his concession, then you miss and he won't play his next shot, is that the match?
